I have RAGING tonsillitis, it started weds courtesy of DH, and it has knocked me for 6... Dh has gone back to work today (6-6) so i am alone with 3 yo and 7 month old, feeling weak and sorry for myself!

He is coming home at lunch with lunch for DCs and to make them a cold tea so i can just grab it from the fridge. So its not all bad.

BUT my throat is sore, my lips have ulcers all over them, and due to my sensitive gag reflex every time i get coughing I'm sick, which wouldnt be so bad but having not eaten its all bile which stings the shit out of my throat which starts me off coughing which means im sick more...

Ive managed a shower but its wiped me out and i was sick twice ironically both sets of parents are on holiday until tomorrow.

Please metaphorially rub my back and tell me I'll be ok?

Of course you have my sympathy and my understanding too. It is awful to be sick, especially when you have little ones at home. Is there anyone could come in for a few hours to watch them so you could rest? If not, just do what you can to get through the day and let dh take over when he comes home. I hope you feel better soon.

CunningAtBothEnds · 27/07/2013 09:17

Thank you! My cousin is going to try and bring me something for my throat, but other than that there is no one around, i have told DS1 we will be having a nap later but everyone fed no one dead will be my motto today i think!

Poor you Flowers Brew

Tonsillitis as a grown up is the pits, tell me about it.

Can you manage plenty of hot fluids, soluble painkillers (are you bf?)

Indulge yourself. Do less than the bare minimum. This too shall pass.

CunningAtBothEnds · 27/07/2013 09:22

Evie it def is i tend to get it upwards of 5 times a year yet the docs wont remove them Sad

Am dosed up on painkillers thank goodness, no longer BF and bottles are sorted for the day, today i shall be languishing!

Oh dear it's awful to be sick with little ones to care for.
Like another poster said, do ehat you can to get through the day. Cbeebies, dvds, dump toys in the garden for your toddler to play with while you supervise from a garden chair. Do you have any friends nearby who could take your toddler for a play date in the morning?

Hope you get better soon

Dylanlovesbaez · 27/07/2013 09:45

The only thing that worked for me was a whisky! Felt amazing. Feeling your pain, get well soon.

fackinell · 27/07/2013 10:02

Cunning, I used to get recurrent tonsillitis and never do at all now. I got antibacterial mouthwash (the good, branded stuff) and gargled with it twice a day. Even with raging tonsillitis, it started to lift immediately. I can only think it was killing the bacteria in my throat. (My tonsils are huge, more like a set of bollocks!!)

As long as you're not sensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients then I'd suggest this. i still do it twice daily. My aunt was the same and I can honestly say its been years since any of us suffered. Grin

Pigsmummy · 27/07/2013 10:08

I gargled warm salt water and sometimes warm water with soluble aspirin in to get pain releif but really it took a couple of days of anti bio tics to clear.

CunningAtBothEnds · 27/07/2013 10:42

Thank you all! I will definitely try the mouthwash tip! (I have corsodyl upstairs will that work?)

Feel bad putting upon friends but DHs nan is going to come and take toddler to the park later, poor sod has been cooped up for 3 days he is going stir crazy, DH has the car so should be home just after 6, so im just dissecting the day now until Dh pops home at one i will just have to rely on tv 1ish to 1.45ish DH will be here with mcdonalds the shame for the toddler, and will get him dressed and suncreamed, get me DS2s lunch if needed etc, then 2-probably id hope 3 Dhs nan will run toddler ragged... Then 3-6 tv / dvds and chocolate biscuits Further shame will be my friend... I feel comforted by the dissection.. last refuge of the damned

Tonsilitis is the pits! Hope you are able to get to bed and have sometime out. Flowers. McDonalds, choc biscuits and tv - pffffft! It is not the work of the devil, for heaven's sake. Go easy on yourself!

fackinell · 27/07/2013 10:48

I've never used it, Cunning. Is it similar to listerine? It should work if it is. I tried it in desperation as my GP wouldn't prescribe me any more ABs, saying my body would get too used to them on several courses a year. I keep meaning to email the co. and tell them about it. Do it for as long as you can manage and several times a day. Glad you're getting a rest today Smile

CunningAtBothEnds · 27/07/2013 10:55

I think so fack, i will get listerine as soon as i am out of Pjs though!

Its just such a daft bloody illness i mean tonsils what are they for?!

Private tonsillectomy is just over £2000. My brother reckons it was worth every penny.

CunningAtBothEnds · 27/07/2013 11:44

I have BUPA wonder if I could get it through that?! The way I feel today i do it myself with pliers!!

OP posts:
shrinkingnora · 27/07/2013 12:02

It's a fairly quick simple procedure now - lasers!

maddening · 27/07/2013 12:14

Can you drink cold milk? To combat the acid in the bile?

Strepsils extra are good and you can get anaesthetic throat spray.

Get well soon x

maddening · 27/07/2013 12:14

And gargle with corsodil

CunningAtBothEnds · 28/07/2013 10:30

I gave in an went to treatment centre last night, crying Blush they took one glance and gave me anti B's and told me they should come out! Also said to take cocodamol, which meant i actually slept last night! Hallelujah!

This sounds an odd idea but I used to do it when my Ds had the same condition as you. I would make birds custard then freeze it in the ice cube tray. He could just manage to suck on the ice cubes which relieved the Pain in his throat whilst giving him a very little nutrition at the same time, as he couldn't eat.
He finally had the tonsils removed and has never been better.

I do commiserate with you, and hope you feel better soon.

quesadilla · 28/07/2013 13:36

Lots of sympathy from me: I had this just before Xmas (on my birthday) when DH was overseas with a then two year old. It really sucks.

The only piece of advice I would give is to relax all TV rules until you get better and plonk them in front of it. And when your DH gets back from work basically hand over to him.

Ginocchio · 28/07/2013 13:49

Cunning if you have BUPA, then yes, they should cover it. I had mine out privately a couple of years ago, and was able to pick an appointment to suit my commitments, rather than having to take the date offered on NHS but then I got a post-op infection so I had to go to NHS because the private hospital wouldn't touch me

CunningAtBothEnds · 28/07/2013 14:48

Thanks all anti bs are kicking in now and I am going to contact Bupa regarding having the viscious bastarding things out, its ridiculous to be in this much pain 20-35 days a year!

OP posts:
Name7 · 28/07/2013 17:33

I had the most horrific pain, infection, mouth ulcers all over my tongue when I had my tonsils out in my early 30's. I would have the op again in a heartbeat. I was the same as you, would get it 5 to 8 times a year, whenever I was run down. I still get sore throats if I have a cold but nothing compared to tonsillitis.

Make sure you have someone who can look after your children for up to 2 weeks after your op. take all the pain relief offered. It is worth it, trust me! Good luck

CunningAtBothEnds · 28/07/2013 17:35

Thank you! We are due to move and collect our puppy soon so I will probably have to wait until the end of the year but I am going to push for it, cant take much more of this! SadThanksWine
