To think my friend is an ignorant, biased fool?

So there is a post on FB re the DM by a mutual friend, and we're all talking about the thinly veiled racism both in the articles and in the comments section of the Mail Online.

Cue my friend, who comes out with this garbage-
'People are becomming (sic) so racist these days it really saddens me coz my Ajay is lovely and he works hard and pays his own way. Its bloody europeans that come over to play the system.'

I've changed the name of her OH to something similiar sounding. Note how she is saddened by racism, but shows her dis contempt for 'bloody europeans.' There are so many fucking hard-working Europeans in this country thank you very much- OK, you get the odd ones that milk the system, but that has nothing to do with they're from. She's putting her precious Ajay (who, by the way, is still married to another woman so he could get his Visa. He admitted this to my friend. He says he will leave her once his work visa comes through or whatever. At least people from Europe are here fair and square.) on a pedestal, even though she was saying the same stuff about people from India and Pakistan before she met him!
She sounds more fucking DM than the rag itself.
Should I say anything? I don't want people to think that I share her stupid bigoted views.

I'd be tempted to ask if she forgot to check her irony setting this morning...but really I'd just block her and silently judge her Grin

GladbagsGold · 26/07/2013 13:38

YANBU. Had to laugh at bloody europeans though, assuming your friend is British does she not think she might be european too?!

SirBoobAlot · 26/07/2013 13:51

I judge anyone who reads the Daily Fail as pretty ignorant anyway.

But no, YANBU.

Whothefuckfarted · 26/07/2013 13:53

I think your friend is a bit thick.

From the sounds of it she thinks that you can only be racist to someone of a different skin colour...

BreasticlesNTesticles · 26/07/2013 13:55

What have the Europeans done?! I blame the Welsh...

Wink
UniqueAndAmazing · 26/07/2013 13:55

hang on, so her Ajay is so fair that he's screwing the system to get a visa?
Confused

that's what i can ignorance.

ppeatfruit · 26/07/2013 13:58

NYANBU that's exactly what she is and she's your friend ? Shock

quoteunquote · 26/07/2013 13:58

What a stupid woman, I assume you are in the UK?

If so you may want to let her know she is a European.

Bakingnovice · 26/07/2013 13:59

'At least people from Europe are here fair and square'.

A little bigotry from yourself there too OP.

Rooners · 26/07/2013 14:02

I'd write 'Lol' under it and leave it at that. What a twit.

Rooners · 26/07/2013 14:03

and yes what BakingNovice said, too. But I couldn't work out if you were being strange in that sentence or not, and I think on balance you are.

cushtie335 · 26/07/2013 14:05

Racism arguments are a minefield.

Sounds like you don't think much of Ajay and are letting it prejudice your own thoughts.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/07/2013 14:08

Just remind me, what continent is Britain on?

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2013 14:08

Should you say anything?

No, just bring the whole thing on to Mumsnet instead Hmm

HatieKokpins · 26/07/2013 14:11

"Just remind me, what continent is Britain on?"

Britain is an island nation that notionally belongs to Europe. Not actually "on" any continent whatsoever.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/07/2013 14:15

Hatie
Britain is an island nation that notionally belongs to Europe. Not actually "on" any continent whatsoever.

This is not strictly accurate as there are a number of definitions of continent and one of the widely used one includes islands on continental shelf which is why Britain and Ireland are included in the continent of Europe.

WafflyVersatile · 26/07/2013 14:26

Well she's not entirely wrong. Racism is prejudice against those of a different race and Europeans (Poles I suppose she means) are not a different race.

I do get quite annoyed, but know I am fighting a losing battle, with people trying to use the word racism in the place of bigotry.

That doesn't stop her being full of nonsense about stealing our jobs blah blah.

And I have some sympathy as she must feel these racist bleats more personally than white people.

All racism is bigotry but not all bigotry is racism.

HatieKokpins · 26/07/2013 14:36

"This is not strictly accurate as there are a number of definitions of continent and one of the widely used one includes islands on continental shelf which is why Britain and Ireland are included in the continent of
Europe"

IN Europe, and ON Europe are not the same thing. HTH.

FlankShaftMcWap · 26/07/2013 14:38

My mother is exactly like this, she contradicts herself constantly. Her brother was dating a lovely African woman who we all loved dearly. A few years after my mother started dating a black Caribbean man and she became aware that Africans and Caribbean's didn't always get along, so she started hating Africans very vocally. Then she started dating a white EDL supporter, and despite having loved a black man for so long she now hates anyone who isn't white.
It's bizarre really. And embarrassing.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/07/2013 14:45

On the European Continental Shelf
HTH

Why are you trying to derail a thread about bigotry?

Dahlen · 26/07/2013 14:50

This is precisely why I don't do Facebook. Even normally sane and decent people can end up writing bigoted rubbish in a moment of madness, sometimes accidentally (by not reading it back and realising how it sounds) and I simply don't want to be tarnished by the same brush.

I'll admit that like Worra I'm a bit bemused by the fact that you're not sure you should say anything but have made yourself and her instantly identifiable to anyone who's seen that post by posting it on MN - a website with a very large audience...

mayoandchips · 26/07/2013 23:25

Sorry if I came across as ignorant by saying Europeans are here fair and square, please correct me if I'm wrong, I just thought it was easier to live and work in different countries in Europe as we are in the EU, nothing to do with any sort of preference for certain groups whatsoever, I just thought there were stricter rules for those outside the union i.e work visas, marriage visas and the like.
My opinions on Ajay living and working here when he is co-habiting with his wife and having an arrangement with her (i.e not divorcing on the grounds he pays her rent) but not actually in a relationship, well that is just dishonest and not right. IMO that is a marriage of convenience and a sham. I actually get on with Ajay, so this has nothing to do with my feelings about him.

OP posts:
mayoandchips · 26/07/2013 23:32

And for the record, I appreciate that the very vast majority of people outside of the EU are also here fair and square, Bakingnovice. I was comparing people from European countries who are here fairly and Ajay, who is most definitely not.
Actually considered reported him, but I couldn't do this behind my friends' back.
