To want to make myself believe in god?

HopHopHopSkip · 25/07/2013 22:55

I have always been very logical and so despite going to a Christian primary school, having a very religious mum(though not in a pushy way) and reading the bible when I was younger(the story version Grin I was a bit of a book worm) I have never really got my head around how god could be possible.

But I really wish I had the extra "something" that some people seem to find by believing in god. I'm probably not making much sense, but I wish I could get myself to feel like there's somebody watching out, that there's something after death, that everything happens for what'd ultimately a good reason/what's meant to be so on.

AIBU to try going to church for a bit even though I don't believe in god? Or am I just being silly, is it something you can't 'make' yourself feel?

I don't mean personally. I mean they accept it as factual and refer to it in the course of their work when necessary, as you would if you had something as incredible as stuff inspired by a supernatural deity. So a geologist, marine biologist, physicist etc use it when working in their firld when necessary. Hope my dr doesn't refer to it when treating me next time I visit!

worldgonecrazy
bet you didn't know you're actually quoting from the God of the bible?!!!!

Look at this Drink wine!

and this Have sex!

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:20

"If your brain was equal to God you would surely have to be a God, and since there is only one God, that's not possible."

So he couldn't give us the brain to accept him and then threw his teddy out the pram when we didn't?

claig · 30/07/2013 15:26

"but why not?? why make it so hard for us to be filled with this wonderful love and to know we are loved unconditionally then?"

I don't know. But my guess is that it is because like attracts like, and beauty and good and the spirit seek out their likeness and enter the beautiful and the good. That is my guess, that you attract what you think deep down. You create your own consciousness, your own reality and pray your own prayers and "seek and ye shall find", "ask and ye shall receive", but do it with an honest, good loving heart and with good intentions. through worship and contemplation of God, you yourself are slowly transformed and you will be changed.

God doesn't demand anything of you, God doesn't punish you if you don't, God loves you either way, but if you want to know God, then it is up to you to seek and if you do it with an open heart and with belief, then faith will transform you, just as faith can move mountains and the Spirit will be with you, just as the Spirit was with each of the martyrs as they suffered for the love of God.

worldgonecrazy · 30/07/2013 15:28

atrcts actually as I am infertile and only got pregnant through the science of IVF, when I have sex I am definitely not multiplying. I'm one of those terrible women labelled "barren" in the Bible (note that the men are never the ones to blame!)

And WTF? The first wine quotation is about getting your Dad drunk so you can have sex with him! And we're supposed to let our children read this shit?

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:29

The scrolls are proven as accurate copies of the originals which proves nothing.

worldgonecrazy · 30/07/2013 15:30

p.s. my gods are older than the biblical gods, so he was actually quoting them when he said to have sex. Jehovah just thought he would add his own take, or maybe the Gnostics are right, and he is a nasty little demi urge who has forgotten where he came from.

claig · 30/07/2013 15:31

"to know we are loved unconditionally"

Religious texts tell you that. It is up to you if you want to believe them or not. But just reading texts is often not enough to make you believe, you need faith in order to see the reality and how you get faith is a magic process that begins by you taking the first step on the journey to seek and ye shall find.

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:31

It's about a transformation, about the Holy Spirit entering you and changing you for the good and the better, so that through you the Holy Spirit will help others too.

What about people who do wonderful things without the hs. Or Christians who do awful stuff with the hs?

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:32

What is the holy spirit made of?

claig · 30/07/2013 15:36

"What about people who do wonderful things without the hs."

I think the Holy Spirit is in them. You don't have to say prayers to be blessed by the Holy Spirit. I believe that like attarcts like and that those who are pure of heart and mind are blessed with teh Holy Spirit, whether they know it or not.

"Or Christians who do awful stuff with the hs?"
That's impossible because the Holy Spirit does no evil and therefore anyone who does evil is not filled with the Holy Spirit.

PramelaAndherson · 30/07/2013 15:38

Headinhands, you seem upset about barbarism and in particular the stoning and suffering of babies. How do you feel about the murder of babies in this country right now? I assume you're anti-abortion?

atrcts · 30/07/2013 15:38

Sorry to hear that, I have a close friend in the same boat and I see her pain.

I managed to accidentally select the wrong links so apologies for that. It appeared that it was the right one but I didn't scroll down far enough in my hurry.

And as for allowing Children to read the previous account? Trust me, they will be exposed to that and worse at some point through talk in the playground! Not that it's ok of course, and that was the point in that story by the way.

Wine

Sex

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:38

So god can put his holy spirit in you without your say so? Why not stick it in every one?

claig · 30/07/2013 15:38

"What is the holy spirit made of?"

Scientists haven't got a clue. Their microscopes, their stethoscopes and their periscopes can give them no answer, because the Holy Spirit is of God and beyond the comprehension of any mere mortal and is not of this physical realm.

claig · 30/07/2013 15:39

"So god can put his holy spirit in you without your say so? Why not stick it in every one?"

Yes, he can. Because like attracts like, and the pure Spirit seeks out the pure of heart and mind.

CoteDAzur · 30/07/2013 15:40

To answer OP: Yes, YABU. Try supporting a football team to find that "extra something" - community, warm fuzzy feeling of never being alone, etc. All possible without suspending disbelief and delu ding yourself.

PramelaAndherson · 30/07/2013 15:40

WorldGoneCrazy, I am blessed to be eight weeks pregnant with an IVF baby I bought through egg donation in the Czech Republic. I thank God for the funds and the science which He made available. There is no wisdom which is not given by God.

2much2young · 30/07/2013 15:41

"I don't know. But my guess is that it is because like attracts like, and beauty and good and the spirit seek out their likeness and enter the beautiful and the good. That is my guess, that you attract what you think deep down. You create your own consciousness, your own reality and "

ouch

Headinhands - The scrolls are proven as accurate copies of the originals which proves nothing.

On the contrary, it proves that, despite the argument for inaccuracies, the original and modern versions are very much compatible.

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:42

While I'm not 100% sure what my views are re abortion I do think until the baby is born it is part of the mother and part of the mothers body. and shemshould have a choice Moreover we are talking about god slaughtering babies. A god who is supposed to be morally superior to me and yet behaves in a way that suggests he is just as flawed as the rest of us.

CoteDAzur · 30/07/2013 15:42

Read claig's last few posts and ask yourself if that extra something is worth modifying your rational mind to a point where you can say that stuff with a straight face.

headinhands · 30/07/2013 15:43

On the contrary, it proves that, despite the argument for inaccuracies, the original and modern versions are very much compatible.

Which again proves nothing.

PramelaAndherson · 30/07/2013 15:45

Cote, why don't you go and amuse yourself on the knitting thread or summat? We hear you: You think the bible is nonsense and that God does not exist. Tell us something we haven't heard before

claig · 30/07/2013 15:46

"Read claig's last few posts and ask yourself if that extra something is worth modifying your rational mind to a point where you can say that stuff with a straight face."

Did the earlier ones make more sense? Grin
