to want to buy a house with space in the kitchen for a fridge..?

Viewed four houses today.

Two of them didn't have a space in the kitchen for a fridge. One of which was a brand new fitted kitchen done up to sell.

In one house you had to walk from the kitchen, through the dining room into a conservatory to access the fridge and in the other you had to walk through the utility room into the garage to get to it.

I thought it seemed too much of a faff and said that I needed the fridge to actually be in the kitchen, or at the very least in an ajoining room.

Estate agent looked at me like this:

Am I totally spoilt and unreasonable. Or is wanting a fridge in the kitchen pretty standard?

Am starting to doubt myself..!

buy mine - it has space for a fridge freezer and a tumble dryer/washing machine/dish washer

I had a minor strop when house hunting a few years ago "I am NOT buying a house where I have to go down to te celler to get to the fridge" and the estate agent made out I was being U too...

As it happened I managed to find a lovely house with room for a fridge in the kitchen. How annoying when cooking to keep having to walk to another room or down to the celler?!?

Oh yes, it also had room for a washing machine, separate tumble dryer and a dishwasher. Unfortunately it's not in london where I live now! Gah.

Have the fitted kitchens not got fitted fridges?

I had to have a door taken out and plastered over to fit a fridge/freezer in and I still don't have room for a dryer that is in a cupboard.

having looked at flats in Edinburgh some flats have space for a draining board and the sink snd the washing machine and fridge are in a cupboard in the lounge

YANBU. My built in fridge broke before Christmas but we are lucky to have a spare in adjoining lobby. Drives me mad keep walking around things, through a door to get to fridge. (That one is on its last legs too!)

Our kitchen is a small galley and we have a fridge, freezer and washing machine. When we moved in there was no freezer space so that was a prioity when we redid the kitchen. If the kitchen had been refurbed then I would say those 3 bits would be a minimum.

Did it have a dishwasher?

YANBU I have a galley kitchen too, had to take out one side of useless cupboards to make a space for a fridge/freezer. Sadly have not got enough £ to take out pointless dishwasher and bore hole in wall for my garage-living tumble drier. How do people cope with just a tiny fridge and icebox with kids? I thought fridge/freezers were fairly universal.

Nope. No dishwasher.

No intergrated fridges either.

Just weird treks to faraway rooms to get your cold stuff.

And with the garage one it didn't even leave space for a car..!

I rented a house where we could only have the fridge in the adjoining but non-insulated utility room. It was a right pain, especially with 1 yo DD trying to fall down the huge concrete step every time I opened the door. YANBU

I moved house last year after more than a decade of living in a house where the fridge-freezer was in the dining room because the kitchen was small. It was a pain in the neck. The kitchen had been designed to fit a tiny fridge under the drainer where most people want a washing machine now. I'm now in a house with a kitchen diner so I have a fridge in the kitchen and can also lay the table whilst keeping an eye on food cooking on the hob. It's brilliant. I'd never buy a house where there's no room for a fridge, except if you're going to alter it.

Estate agents are trying to persuade you to buy the house so they'll never admit that it's a downside. They'd rather you think you're making a fuss about nothing and then buy the house and then realise too late that you were right all along.

YANBU. Having a fridge in the kitchen is not open to question in a normal person's life. Not even a question I'd think to ask / something I'd look for specifically on the details, I'd just assume it was.
I even though my SiL was mad for having her fridge in the 'dining' end of a large breakfast kitchen she was installing, rather than the 'working' end, and that was all in the same room!

We went to view a house once, where the owners had spent a fortune doing it up and it was vile too. The kitchen was brand spanking new, but we asked where the fridge was. The estate agent opened a few cupboard doors and then called the office to ask if anyone there knew. Then he phoned the vendors - no, the fridge (a massive F-you American-style one) was in the garage, which involved unlocking a triple-locked back door, walking across a bit of garden and then unlocking the garage side door before you could get the milk out for a cuppa. Can you imagine doing that in your dressing gown first thing in the morning in winter?

We didn't buy it! Saw the house still for sale a few months later, but with the pictures amended and they had a little counter-top fridge stuck right in the middle of the worktop.

I lost count of the number of houses we looked at and my DH would say "where's the fridge?" He noticed straight away it wasn't in the kitchen (but he is a kitchen designer and was looking out for things like that)

I assumed the OP had just been very unlucky and hit some strange design by a bit of bad luck!

Our fridge is in the (adjoining) utility room. It's a bit of a pain but you kind of get used to scooping up everything you need in one go instead of schlepping back and forth.

I wouldn't go beyond an adjoining room though.

Our kitchen it is tiny. It's more like an alcove off our mahoosive dining room. It has the cooker, sink, dishwasher and plenty of cupboard space but no room for our American style fridge/freezer thingy. I can stand in the middle and touch all the worktops and cupboards without stretching. Not planning to sell anytime soon but perhaps we should think about knocking through.

And I've lost all perspective on what a small kitchen looks like after watching Escape to the Country. Apparently a small kitchen is about the same size as a tennis court.

They'll be calling me in the morning asking for feedback.

Will it be okay to say that I'm not interested because of the weird fridge/kitchen scenarios?

We had this, one house had large kitchen, with breakfast bar, all newly done etc. There was easily place to leave the last cupboard in the row out for the fridge, but no, the fridge was next door in the utility room. Which incidentally meant that the utility room was then overcrowded and you couldn't access the washing machine properly!

Also one or two houses where large kitchen and very very small under the counter fridge.

I found myself double checking in every house - where is the fridge/how can I fit in a fridge

I have come to the conclusion that people just don't cook, so don't notice

We once tried to buy a kitchen from b&q and were told we couldn't fit in a fridge, even though we currently have one. Perhaps all these home owners did the same?

our fridge is currently in the dining room, but there is a Grand Plan to knock through, and reunite it with all the other kitchen appliances, who miss it dearly.
