Fake Vegetarian MIL. AIBU?

Mixxy · 24/07/2013 06:25

MIL is an animal lover (lots of people are). She is self-righteous in lots of ways, what annoys me most recently is
her assertion that she is a vegetarian. She eats meat 6 times a week. Not fish mind you, meat. (I'm not trying to touch the pescetarian issue).

When you find her eating meat at meal times, she says, "oh I've had to eat meat today because of doctors orders". Fine-she's 80. But why call yourself a vegetarian?

Anyway, DH got a fantastic career oppertunity. To celebrate, I'm throwing a dinner party for a few close friends at our place. DH asked if his parents could come as his mother had worked in the same industry as him. I agreed.

Anyway, MIL rang me to let her know the time to arrive this
Saturday. She asked if I knew what I was cooking. I told her it was 4 courses with the main being Cornish Hens. She then asked what thw vegetarian options would be. I told her none. She got very indignant and cried, "but you know I'm a vegetarian'.

Nobody else coming is (8 others) a vegetarian. My BIL isa vegetarian and I accommodate when I cook for him, because he is the type of vegetarian that DOES NOT EAT MEAT OF ANY KIND. I feel annoyed that I now have to make 2 seperate courses to accomodate her fake vegetarianism.

AIBU to want to call her a fake, self-centered, drama queen?

Get Dh to cook a veggie option

pinkmagic1 · 24/07/2013 06:29

Make her a cheese sandwich!

daisychain01 · 24/07/2013 06:30

Mixxy, if I were you I would ask her what veggie dish she would like and prepare it for her with grace. At the age of 80, just accept her inconsistencies with humour, she probably does contradict herself, but go with the flow, have a lovely evening and dont let something like that spoil your and DHs enjoyment of his new job success (well done him!)

CSIJanner · 24/07/2013 06:31

God! This is like Gavin & Stacey.

Could you have series one running in the background as you offer her a pombear with cheese and chive dip? Grin

maternitart · 24/07/2013 06:31

Tell her hers is made of Quorn?

YANBU unless she

SanityClause · 24/07/2013 06:31

Call her what you like, but realistically, you're still going to have to provide vegetarian food for her.

maternitart · 24/07/2013 06:32

...unless she only eats one type of meat.

ChippingInHopHopHop · 24/07/2013 06:35

I am vegetarian.

She is not.

Grin

Just give her (what I would be equally happy with), whatever everyone else is having, minus the cornish hen... tell her that is the vegetarian option.

Or bung a couple of Quorn fillets in a fry pan. Don't go to a lot of trouble.

maternitart · 24/07/2013 06:37

Actually you'll be making lots of veg I assume to go with the hen so just give her a large plate of that with maybe a stuffed field mushroom/pepper. Hardly a hassle.

maternitart · 24/07/2013 06:38

Buy a nice quality veggie microwave meal, serve it to her if she would like it. If she changes her mind and wants meat, that's fine as well. She's 80, I'd say be accommodating and have a chuckle about it.

exoticfruits · 24/07/2013 06:44

You spend much more energy getting upset than just getting her something simple to eat with the veg- it isn't worth it.

IcedTeaOneSugar · 24/07/2013 06:45

Quorn Family Roast to replace the hen, is no trouble to prepare, I'm a veggie and would go for the easy life option.

Montybojangles · 24/07/2013 06:54

Pour some cheese sauce over her cauliflower/broccoli.

What possible medical reason does her GP give for her necessity to eat meat? I'm genuinely curious.

Inertia · 24/07/2013 06:57

Just make whatever you were making with a quorn fillet , don't go to the bother of a whole new meal . I' m (really) vegetarian and would be happy with this .

Mitzyme · 24/07/2013 07:09

She sounds hilarious. She is 80yr ffs are you sure she is not winding you up.

Mixxy · 24/07/2013 07:12

Thanks for the advice. Particularly from all the real veggies.

It wouldn't stick in my craw so much if I hadn't seen her eating a ham steak covered in BBQ sauce last night when I dropped off her laundry. I'm sure her doctor didn't recommend that.

I'm going to make her an asparagus and mushroom quiche which I can make the night before and bung it in the oven with the hens.

It just annoys me. She's so smug and self-righteous. She is only doing it to be a pain in my backside and pay back for a recent disagreement we had had.

And to the poster who sent congrats to my husband, thanks. It really is a break he deserved!

YANBU. My MIL says she's 'vegetarian' too. She's vegetarian until it comes to going out for breakfast and suddenly it's OK to eat the bacon and sausages on the breakfast buffet!
Hmm Grin
I wouldn't let it annoy me so much but if ds is eating a ham sandwich for example and says "ooh, yummy!" she'll comment with "aww, not so nice for the poor piggy that got killed for it, though, is it?!" [shocked]
Angry
How is that any different to what you scoff at breakfast, then?! Grrr!!!
and breathe!
If you're doing veggies anyway, just stick a quorn fillet in as well to keep her quiet. Smile while inwardly shouting argh!

pianodoodle · 24/07/2013 08:35

Haha! She does sound a bit contrary :)

This would tickle me rather than anger as it isn't a massive thing but can see why it would get annoying!

If it actually is some PA payback type thing she'll suffer more anyway as she'll secretly be coveting everyone else's dinner :)

missesjellybean · 24/07/2013 08:40

lololololol sorry but this would have me in stitches not angry!

she sounds like the mum off Gavin and Stacy! just but here a macaroni cheese microwave meal Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

missesjellybean · 24/07/2013 08:40

buy her ... stupid I phone not but here

Mixxy · 24/07/2013 08:48
