I popped into a pub this afternoon for a wee and a pint and they had a Royal Baby Name sweepstake board behind the bar.

Someone had suggested 'Dodi.' Grin

My comment wasnt aimed at you at all Confused

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 10:03

I didn't think it was addressed to anyone in particular. Just all the lying republican people saying things for effect. Or did I get the wrong end of the stick?

mignonette · 27/07/2013 10:11

A little uneasy at targeting a baby but....To claim that his private birth somehow means they have not 'cost' us anything is a joke. Giles Coren always riffs off this claim that private education/medicine means he is not a tax payers burden whilst conveniently forgetting that until private healthcare starts training its own staff, it is essentially parasitic allowing the NHS/TaxPayer to pay. Hospitals and other care services have to provide placements/mentors/education both pre and post registration alongside the educational and training establishments.

Angelfootprints · 27/07/2013 10:20

The horrible comment about princess Di death.... Just horrid and almost psychopathic. In general, Normal people dont "pretend" to feel sad over a fellow human beings death. They actually are.

sashh · 27/07/2013 10:49

KhaosandKalamity

How many other pilots have a palace in London? OK maybe they don't have the entire place, just about 20 rooms.

Who do you think pays for the upkeep of the many residences the royal family have? Who pays for police protection?

Police numbers are being cut, but I bet they won't cut the protection of the royal family.

The Queen is worth billions, why should we pay for her upkeep?

creighton · 27/07/2013 11:05

Charles is as big a self-obsessed whinyarse as Diana ever was only his whining was covered up more than hers.

she was entitled to whine about a family/business organisation that used her as a breeding machine but did not have any regard for her as a person.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 11:59

I'm glad you said "almost psychopathic", Angel. It's also different to be glad from the point of view of not having to constantly hear and read about Diana anymore (she was on tv and the front of newspapers whenever she wore a new dress or said anything), and glad about someone dying in itself.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 12:01

Thank goodness, Charles is not exactly the darling of the press/TV..

PeoplesRepublicOfBerkshire · 27/07/2013 12:09

I don't think SGB was talking about republicans being sad I think she was talking about the queen and Charles pretending to be sad. I think the queen was probably pleased to see the back of her tbh.

Secretswitch · 27/07/2013 12:14

How sad to revile a baby for his parentage. As if he had any choice in the matter. Adults are fair target, but little one's should be off limits.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 12:21

Didn't bother looking back at the thread, People's. You're most probably right. Maybe I'm remembering something DH said (or projecting). DH is convinced that practically every paper in the 80's and 90's (until 97), especially the express, was interested in ever covering anything and everything about Dian - on their front pages, nevertheless. He was relieved when that changed. Not about the death itself. I wasn't in the country at the time, so can't comment on the change..

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 12:22

Yes, yes, secret. Hate, hate, hate. You're right. FFS.

Secretswitch · 27/07/2013 12:30

My goodness, toys, you seem a bit worked up.

TheOrginalPoster · 27/07/2013 13:10

Messed up to be pleased you don't have to read about something anymore (and who was putting the gun to your head exactly forcing you to read it?)even if means two little children lost their mum.

Well as long as you dont have suffer reading about someone anymore eh?

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 14:08

Fine, I and my DH are monsters. Quite clearly. I wasn't worked up before, but sort of getting there soon..

Do you not see the difference I pointed in my earlier post? We're NOT happy she died. How is it possible to misinterpret that? Or is it forbidden to talk about the (excessive) press coverage someone had? Or is it only forbidden because they are dead? I'm sure DH would have been equally happy if the press had stopped writing so much about her every hair cut for any other reason. Nothing sinister there, I assure you!

But, like I said, if it makes your day, you're more than welcome to think that we're awful people mocking a dead lady and her surviving family. And ESPECIALLY the baby. We especially hate the baby.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 14:12

Yes, you can (entirely realistically) completely avoid the media by staying at home and only ever shopping online while carefully avoiding any other websites, so I guess that is a fair point, TheOriginal.

ToysRLuv · 27/07/2013 14:13

However, it wasn't possible in the 80's, so you'd have to pay someone else to go to the shops for you.

flippinada · 27/07/2013 14:23

I distinctly remember the press coverage of Diana in the 80s and 90s - am in my late 30s now.

Not that I'm keen on the word but it was verging on the hysterical, and she was in the press constantly (especially but not just the tabs) so ToysRUs you are not wrong.

Crying laughing@ almost psychopathic commentGrin Grin

morethanpotatoprints · 27/07/2013 14:28

Oh so funny Grin
I love all the jokes, they are refreshing after a week of bloody trivial news about baby and mum.

Iamsparklyknickers · 27/07/2013 14:32

Just a small point about the weekly meetings with the PM, the Queen is our head of state and therefore represents us to a lot of other governments and heads of states. No she doesn't really have any direct influence other than an opportunity to express an opinion, but she does have to communicate and represent our country knowledgeably and tactfully.

That's one of the reasons I personally see some value in the monarchy rather than an elected head of state. Her stance will not be influenced by a need to gain anything to stay where she is. In cases her personal opinion is conflicted with the countries/government there's no conflict over the power of her own personal influence.

Crying laughing@ almost psychopathic comment

Okkaaayyyy....

motherinferior · 27/07/2013 18:00

Actually, take it from me, people whipped themselves up into a fervour of hysteria which was far more alarming than SGB's psychopathology, believe me, when Di kicked the bucket. I was running the comms at one of her charities at the time and the ensuing week was quite mesmerising in a terrifying sort of way.

Secretswitch · 27/07/2013 18:09

Seems odd for people to enrage themselves over a baby. Makes you wonder about their lives and how frustration is generally handled. Lashing out at a newborn seems a bit odd.
