To think Blackpool is a bit shit

Just came back from Blackpool and it was utter shit. Why haven't the council there made improvements and made it a decent place to visit?

There is hardly anywhere halfway reasonable to eat, it looks completely broken and unloved. There is just so much potential for development and it could be the "Orlando" of England. Instead, it's just shite.

I've come away thinking I don't need to take my children to Africa to appreciate what they've got: just take them to Blackpool.

On a good note, the beach is very nice. Shame about the drunks weeing all over the stairs to the beach and leaving beer cans everywhere. I saw broken Britain in Blackpool and I shall never go back again.

I will now always associate Blackpool as the place where two of DH's (now ex thankfully) friends had a threesome with a prostitute on a stag weekend, while both of their pregnant partners were waiting at home. Apparently they literally picked her up off the street and even bartered with another bloke to ensure that they got her.

Enough said really.

Shock Shock Shock

tanfastic · 25/07/2013 11:56

Not sure what happened where Walkabout is concerned, I just woke up one morning and it was all over the news - burnt to the ground!

My parents used to have a B&B in Blackpool (for 20 years for their sins, took 3 bastard years to sell it when my dad died). Anyway, when they first took it over they had to honour the bookings taken by the predecessor which was mainly stag and hens. My mum didn't know what had bloody hit her. One weekend she had a stag party and a hen party booked in and they wrecked the rooms and the women from the hen party were taking it in turns to shag the stag and were making no secret about it. Now I'm broad minded but un-fucking-believable Confused.

After that they only took couples and families Grin

tanfastic · 25/07/2013 11:58

Actually I think my mum got her big stick out and threatened to throw them all out GrinGrinGrin

PGTip · 25/07/2013 12:42

I love going Grin

I love the illuminations, the plastic tattiness of it all. I think that's why I love it! I know what it is and expect nothing else.

We go to see the lights, we go to the Pleasure Beach & we go up the tower, it's fab to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2013 12:49

Ooh yes, if I'm going it will have to be during the hallucinations. Grin

WhiteDogBlackSpots · 25/07/2013 13:07

Blackpool has again failed to achieve minimum water quality on its beaches.
If you go, don't go in the sea whatever you do!

chocoluvva · 25/07/2013 13:30

Rhonda it'll be great. The kids will love the Pleasure Beach and you'll surprise yourself by finding it much better than you expect.

tanfastic · 25/07/2013 13:40

I went in the sea the other week and i'm still here!

Tweasels · 25/07/2013 13:47

I went on a hen night to Blackpool. It was hideous.

The bar in the B&B we were staying in had newspaper cuttings on the walls of local murders Hmm

MarmaladeTwatkins · 25/07/2013 14:11

Grin Tweasels! Shock

minouminou · 25/07/2013 14:36

Has anyone nominated this for Classics?
I'm dying here!!!
Attic nonce, crabs, cat-sized cockroaches, rug-munching with a kiss me quick hat....

It's brilliant.

minouminou · 25/07/2013 14:39

Oh god....I just read about the man writing 'Fuck' in his own urine on the wall of the Job Centre. I'm crying....partly with laughter, partly with despair.

Davsmum · 25/07/2013 14:44

I agree with the earlier comments about Lytham St Anne's - I had never bothered going there until a few weeks ago and its really nice - Hard to believe its so near to Blackpool, which is really scruffy.
We did pop in to Blackpool and were shocked how shabby it was.

We went to a lovely Italian restaurant in St Anne's. We may even book to stay there for a few days.

minouminou · 25/07/2013 14:49

We have friends who live in one of the nice regions on the outskirts, and they simply don't go into the middle of town - ever.

Lytham and Bispham are nice, yes.

Reallynothappy · 25/07/2013 14:51

I used to work in that jobcentre :(

tanfastic · 25/07/2013 15:12

If only I could afford property in Lytham Hmm

beatback · 25/07/2013 15:50

Davsmum. Yes Lytham St Annes is very place nice and TIGGIS is a very decent resturant.

beatback · 25/07/2013 15:51

very nice place!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 25/07/2013 15:53

Lytham st Annes is the third most desirable location in the North West Grin

Davsmum · 25/07/2013 15:56

beatback,
We only had lunch there but it was lovely and the staff were lovely. We intend to go back for a BIG dinner!

What bit of Merseyside did I go to last year to collect a Habitat cd rack that I won on eBay?... It was lovely and I wanted to live there after just driving through it.

Must investigate.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 25/07/2013 16:14

Hoylake. That was it. I liked it. Just the right balance of naiceness, northern grit and seaside to appeal.

timidviper · 25/07/2013 16:33

Well I am looking at St Annes beach now Beer and it is stunning in this nice weather, a huge, golden, sandy beach! Maybe the grey is more to do with the normal weather Smile

Which restaurant did you go to Davsmum? Jack's Bistro is excellent, as is Zen (chinese and thai food). St Annes is getting some nice places to eat now and I think is nicer at night than Lytham as it is less pretentious. You don't have to suffer the identikit women (skinny, blonde, plastic-y types) looking out for the next man with a few quid.
