To believe wholeheartedly in Cosmic Ordering?

Or really just the power of positive thinking.

I'm very much an optimist and tend to think I've had a pretty charmed life. You could spin it another way, as I've had homelessness, a shit marriage, depression, debt, poverty blah blah blah. But all that notwithstanding, I think I'm an incredibly lucky person. My ups outweigh my downs, by far.

Anyway, about six years ago I did a proper Cosmic Ordering shizzle (marker pen on my hand and everything, a la Noel Edmonds), and got a windfall, a new car and a new house within six months (which was exactly what I'd 'asked' for).

I'm not woo enough to think it was all handed to me on a plate because I asked for it, but I do genuinely think that if you visualise what you want, write it down if you feel the need, and believe in it, you can make anything happen. I've done it again in the last few months, and things seem to be working out better than I could have imagined.

What do you think? Do you believe in the power of positivity, and that we make our own luck, or do think it's all a pile of toss? Do you find that being optimistic leads to taking more chances which in turn leads to greater opportunities, or do you think I should stop barking on about it when clearly it's just blind luck and/or coincidence?

And yes I have had celebratory Wine so I might be on a bit of a positivity buzz.

Interesting, I know someone who has had a very hard life, and she is the most positive person I know. Dreadful things happen and she can see the positive of them.

nenevomito · 23/07/2013 20:38

How on earth can saying that having a positive attitude may make you take chances that may lead to positive outcomes be equated to suggesting that parents may lose children because they don't try hard enough????

I am really, really sorry for anyone who has had a loss, but saying you believe in positive actions doesn't damn everyone who has had to live through terrible times.

RoseFlowerFairy · 23/07/2013 20:38

I think it can be very easy to be positive if you have had an easy life, the people who I admire are those who have had huge life challenges and remain positive.

scottishmummy · 23/07/2013 20:38

Circumstance, finances, health, people we know, luck.bad luck, external factors all shape outcomes
Not cosmic doo-dah.itsnot so reductionist as positivity, some v nice decent people get shite deals
Positivity is a mindset,it's not an invincible force field.well done on your luck,it's not positivity it's luck

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2013 20:39

And MalcolmTuckersMum has saved me a shit load of typing by saying what I was thinking.

Cosmic! Grin

Reality · 23/07/2013 20:40

I feel bad now.

I really didn't mean that anyone suffering shit is just Not Being Positive Enough.

I was just chatting shit, really.

I'll move me and my good mood over to Facebook and annoy people with candy Crush requests instead.

Flowers and a hug for you and your DD, and of course my best best wishes, Fanny xx

for all...

Aw reality, I feel bad now as well! I hate people who piss on others' parades and now I've done it myself! Thanks for your good wishes, I'm off to do a bit of CC myselfGrin

BIWI · 23/07/2013 20:46

It's difficult. I'd love to agree with you, in a lighthearted way - but it's impossible. My mum was the most positive, determined and focused person you could ever wish to meet. But didn't stop breast cancer killing her.

Sorry. Sad

Interesting might be,account of what has changed for you.what practical stuff did you do
What shfted from doldrums to feeling on top of stuff
I don't think this is result of cosmic woo,but I'd be interested in back story

usualsuspect · 23/07/2013 20:50

Is that you ,Noel?

merrymouse · 23/07/2013 20:51

It is working in the sense that you find it motivating and you are focusing on the parts of your life that are going well. I don't think there is a 'woo' side to it.

Also, you are applying it to parts of your life that are under your control.

Another person might say they were making a to do list and counting their blessings, but if 'cosmic ordering' works for you, great.

AKissIsNotAContract · 23/07/2013 20:55

I do think that people with a positive outlook don't necessarily have harder lives than more negative people.

I don't believe in all that 'the secret' crap though. I'm on my third glass of wine so might not be making much sense. Is there a Tuesday night drunk thread?

Reality · 23/07/2013 20:56

That's it excatly, mouse.

Thank you.

I meant easier, not harder, I told you I wasn't Making too much sense

SlangWhanger · 23/07/2013 21:00

I could certainly do with a bit of cosmic ordering for Candy Crush level 391
it's another impossible level on the ipad Sad

That aside I think cosmic ordering and similar thinking is a load of bollucks and I don't believe it at all.

Having a positive personality and appriciating the good things in your life are great characteristics though.

Some people have bad luck just because they do. It s a bit off to suggest they wouldn't have had it if they had a more positive attitude.

Anyway, I am glad things have been going well for you OP.

scottishmummy · 23/07/2013 21:06

You wished for flat stomach.to archive this you dieted and exercised
That's not cosmic bs,that's calorie reduction and exercise
Your sending off lot of cv,that increase likelihood of find new job

Is Noel Edmond's into this asking the Universe for stuff then?

Reality Why do you write stuff on your hand? Could you briefly explain your method of asking, please?

I am interested in anything that may enable me to have a more positive outlook on life.

Reality · 23/07/2013 21:25

You write on your hand to focus the old grey matter on what you want to achieve.

You can also write stuff down like a shopping list.

Sm, that's kind of my whole point. I could have bimbled along with my paunch, eating biscuits and being unhappy in my career. But I found giving it a 'woo' and fun spin makes working towards stuff more palatable.

It doesn't always work but things seem to happen more when I do.

That's all.

SoleSource · 23/07/2013 21:27

So what do you say to the Universe?

It all sounds good to me!

MalcolmTuckersMum · 23/07/2013 21:28

I believe in it OP. Haven't ordered anything for ages............

You make it sound like Argos Grin

Ok....if that's how it works I'll order the following -

New car
New sofa
New carpet
Garden makeover
A little less pain would be nice
Ooh - Holiday! I like holidays, I do!
Is there a limit?? Grin

Oh - and can I have a whole shit ton of nice stuff for my friends too? And for worra who is currently living in my head. Could she piss off please and find her own place? Ta.

LeGavrOrf · 23/07/2013 21:29

Reality, I love you dearly but have you had a line of cocaine? Grin

LeGavrOrf · 23/07/2013 21:29
