to think dh could win a prize for weirdo of the year with his holiday packing checklist

Now this is partly my fault because years ago I downloaded the mumsnet holiday checklost and gave it to dh who then adapated and added to it but he's just given me this year's and it's Gone Too Far.

It has loads of useful stuff of things to do etc but it also now has a list of 'Things the cottage doesn't have' (we've stayed in the same place for the last few years), things you can't buy on Mull, things that are very expensive and (this is the really freakish bit) a list of what we used last year.
Apparently we need 12 toilet rolls, 1 jar of nutella, no more than 30 teabags (sic), 1/2 tub hot chocolate and 1/2 tub of marshmallows.

AIBU to declare this weird. He says he feels maligned and is sure you will all find it and him irresistibly wonderful.......

I like a list but it's not as comprehensive as this (I am impressed though).

30 teabags isn't enough. That's the bit that troubles me. Last year I took a box of 60 to America for a fortnight and it wasn't enough.

HawaiianSunset12 · 22/07/2013 08:51

How long are you going for??

unionjackcovered · 22/07/2013 09:00

I am just jealous that you are going on holiday to Mull! Love that you mustn't forget the children!!Grin

trice · 22/07/2013 09:22

I too have an inflatable whale on my packing list. His name is Dante.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 22/07/2013 09:25

I can see his point, being a fellow list addict Blush

And it is pricey highlands & islands. But a tiny tad excessive.

Bless him.

BeenieBaby · 22/07/2013 09:28

Love it! Adding this thread to my watch list so I can nick some ideas off his list! He sounds fab. It's up to me to do the list for packing and it takes me at least a day to get all the stuff together for me and the two dc and my list is nowhere close to the length of his. How long does his prep take?!?

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 22/07/2013 09:30

Oh FFA that list is too much, even for me! LTB,

that better northern?

TheOldestCat · 22/07/2013 09:30

Northernlurker, I find your DH irresistibly wonderful Grin.

stealthsquiggle · 22/07/2013 09:32

I fee the need for an inflatable whale now. It would counterbalance the ridiculous amount of diving kit nicely, I feel.

Greige · 22/07/2013 09:49

That list is a thing of beauty.

BearsInMotion · 22/07/2013 10:15

My list is very similar, except where yours is broken down into Health and Beauty etc, mine is sorted by packing location "roof box, DP bag, Bear's bag" etc. I think that's much more logical!

Am also disappointed that Haswell is not on the list, how can anyone travel up there without one? Shock

MunchkinsMumof2 · 22/07/2013 10:33

I love that "children" are on the not to be forgotten list! My dh is list mad and we have a separate list for every holiday, even if we are going back to the same place. He has a specific book for the lists and everything has to be ticked off, to be fair to him though his job involves many checklists so it could be a hangover from that!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 22/07/2013 10:46

OMFG! DORITOS ARE THE ONLY NACHO AVAILABLE IN MULL??
There's no fucking way I am EVER going there then!

northernlurker · 22/07/2013 12:16

I guess the point is that we could have a lovely holiday without some of this stuff but part of the point of it is to have time to do stuff we don't get to do at home. I think i may leave the slow cooker behind this year though. Also I've never taken the kitchen aid - yet.

Oh my god.

Reading that list has taken me longer than it takes me to pack for a fortnight's holiday somewhere remote and with no shops for new loo roll.

squeakytoy · 22/07/2013 12:48

blimey... reading that list makes me realise why I go to the canaries, pack minimal clothes, and eat out!

kickassangel · 22/07/2013 12:59

Our last holiday, I managed to tear my calf muscle a few days before we left.

12 hours before we went I still hadn't done laundry or got the cases out. Dh was at work and I was on crutches.

Packed it all and didn't forget a thing. No lists involved. My secret?

The lists are all in my head!

FryOneFatManic · 22/07/2013 13:02

We have a list that has been fined tuned over the years.

I print a copy when packing, and I double check with DP what needs to be added (although we don't go to the ridiculous lengths of specifying amounts of loo roll), ie items specific to a certain place.

My stuff is separated by type, eg Medical, Clothes, Toiletries, etc. I don't specify a location in which bag, because once I've gathered everything together, I try to fit it all in to the smallest space possible.

aldiwhore · 22/07/2013 13:06

Argh, that list makes me shudder.

Now a general list of important things I can live with:

Children
Wallet
Make sure cat is out.

But northernlurker I would be ripping that list up or driving the heavily pack car into the sea.

We used to overpack, pack for every eventuality, pack for Armageddon and unpacking and re-packing was a headache I could do without. We now take as little as we can. One small bag each plus one bag of 'other stuff', and actually, our holidays feel longer and there's nothing we've had to miss out on due to not being prepared enough.

SlangWhanger · 22/07/2013 13:51

If my DH did a list like this I would not be able to resist secretly removing an 'important' item from the car before leaving. I would get a lot of pleasure in seeing his face when he realises that he didn't actually pack the salad spinner/half bag of marshmallows etc Shock
