to think dh could win a prize for weirdo of the year with his holiday packing checklist

Now this is partly my fault because years ago I downloaded the mumsnet holiday checklost and gave it to dh who then adapated and added to it but he's just given me this year's and it's Gone Too Far.

It has loads of useful stuff of things to do etc but it also now has a list of 'Things the cottage doesn't have' (we've stayed in the same place for the last few years), things you can't buy on Mull, things that are very expensive and (this is the really freakish bit) a list of what we used last year.
Apparently we need 12 toilet rolls, 1 jar of nutella, no more than 30 teabags (sic), 1/2 tub hot chocolate and 1/2 tub of marshmallows.

AIBU to declare this weird. He says he feels maligned and is sure you will all find it and him irresistibly wonderful.......

Dh's list if he had one would read, " anything my wife spends days sorting out while I do nothing except make comments about too much fuss being made but will be happy we have when I need it.". My fuss was the reason he had Immodium, toilet roll and disinfectant wipes when he had the shits in India, is the reason he had anti malarial drugs in Africa and the reason DD had Milton, formula, bottles and a camping bucket to sterile the bottles in Egypt!
Bitter, moi?!

Viviennemary · 21/07/2013 21:00

My DH drives me totally mad. Weeks before it he is wittering on about what factor sun creams he will take and searching for last years insect repellent to make sure it is still in date. So he has a huge checklist of so much stuff he needs to buy half of the stuff goes missing before we even start packing.

apostropheuse · 21/07/2013 21:01

*Ahem, my DH has separate lists for 'skiing holiday', 'summer holiday' 'weekend at Center Parcs' and then a generic list for 'things to do to the house before we go' (eg put bolt on shed, put rubbish out etc).
*

Oh this is like reading about myself! I have them all in one Excel book, but separate tabs/sheets for each particular holiday. It's extremely sensible. You need different things for different holidays after all!

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:03

That might be my longest ever post....

OP posts:
Nagoo · 21/07/2013 21:03

I had to stop reading that list. I'm getting the horn Blush

Donki · 21/07/2013 21:04

I'd be careful, Northern, I might be tempted to try and replace my DH with yours...
Especially if he likes Mull. We went to Iona 4 years ago, and DH has sworn never to go back to Argyll.
(Fair play, this is because he got appendicitis on Iona. With bad enough weather that the air ambulance couldn't fly.... He had a painful and complicated transfer to the hospital in Oban via the Doctor's car and two different ambulances and two ferries, sedated to the eyeballs on morphine for pain. I could only say thank God the ferries were still running!)

kinkyfuckery · 21/07/2013 21:04

That's a great list - think I will adapt it for myself if your DH wouldn't mind.

I have to ask though - is it a naturist holiday? Wink

nothruroad · 21/07/2013 21:06

I think you should leave him - I'll take him off your hands! That is a truly impressive list. I especially love the fact that some items are laminated!

Lambzig · 21/07/2013 21:06

Ye gods northern lurker, is it worth you going at all if you have to pack that list.

Perhaps secretly I am jealous as DH is hopeless and I have to do all the packing. The first holiday we had together, we went island hopping in Greece in august. We weren't living together so packed our own stuff. We arrived in Tinos the first night and DH proudly unpacked 8 pairs of black socks, two pairs of pants and one t-shirt. That's all apart from the jeans and t-shirt he was wearing. For two weeks holiday.

apostropheuse · 21/07/2013 21:07

Why do you need travel insurance for Mull?

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:09

Adapt away. Dh is thrilled you all like it. Hands off though ladies - I will force myself to appreciate him Wink

No we take clothes too. STrangely we don't seem to need a list for that.

Donki - that sounds hideous! I can well imagine how uncomfortable that was.

MyBoysAreFab · 21/07/2013 21:09

Oh dear god by the time you get it all unpacked it will be time to come home!

JollyHolidayGiant · 21/07/2013 21:09

Your DH is a genius. I aspire to geekishness like that. I wish I'd written down how many toilet rolls we used in our holiday cottage this year.

Tryharder · 21/07/2013 21:10

How do you fit that lot in your car?

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:11

Lambzig - we go for two weeks and yes it's worth it Grin

The travel insurance is in case of cancellation basically. Until two years ago I couldn't drive and if dh had broken his arm for example we wouldn't have been able to go. We spend around £1100 on the holiday so it's worth £20 to protect that in case of disaster I think.

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:12

We have a roofbox and three children trained to pull their weight. We also like to fit in a packing row Grin

JollyHolidayGiant · 21/07/2013 21:13

And the cottage contains 'not enough' scissors... How many do you need??

apostropheuse · 21/07/2013 21:13

Ahhh I understand the travel insurance now!

madamehooch · 21/07/2013 21:14

DD (13) has prepared a power point presentation of her to pack list :-D

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:16

At least two pairs of scissors are needed. The cottage has one.

I feel the need to explain the 'are we there yet' ebcause that is one dh's very good ideas.

BAsically he's googlemapped the whole route with mileage at every junction etc and tick boxes. It's laminated so dc can tick off where we are and see how we're progressing.

northernlurker · 21/07/2013 21:17

Here are the mumsnet lists

OP posts:
BreadNameBread · 21/07/2013 21:18

This would be my DHs list

1 hour before trip
Pack own clothes and own toiletries
Get awful CDs for car and inflict awful music on rest of family for entire journey

Just as we are about to leave
Get in car
Glance around the car and say 'Are we ready then?'

Start driving

TinaSurrey · 21/07/2013 21:19

You should leave him so I can propose to him. That is my idea of perfection ;-)

Sounds scarily similar to my lists. I also have separate spreadsheets for weekend away, hot holiday abroad, c parcs, night away without kids, etc, etc.

Dumbledoresgirl · 21/07/2013 21:19

Blimey Northernlurker, your dh is an absolute GOD. I wish my dh would come up with as comprehensive a list as that.

We are going away on Thursday and he told the children to get their clothes out today (amid much grumping from children who want to know why they have to do it 4 days in advance.) The reason is because they are in school for the next 2 days, and I am hopelessly last minute about everything. But that is all dh will do. The rest is down to me, I know.

I would be more organised with a list like that though. I am dead jealous of it. Anyone want to do a list for me? We are flying to Rome for 5 days and I just can't organise my thoughts at all.
