To not know what to do with the stinky chicken smell?

I threw some chicken into the wheeliebin a few days ago. I tied it tight into two bags before I threw it, but now it's absolutely stinking the yard out each time I open the bin, and we share the yard with other neighbours. I don't know what to do to calm the stink down, and I'm afraid that maggots will appear. We don't share the bin with anyone. It's about 10 days til it's emptied :o(

Take the bin as far away as possible from anywhere most people go. Only put things in the bin late at night so there's a chance for the smell to dissipate by morning. If this doesn't work then maybe take the wheelie bin to the nearest tip and empty it yourself.

Send it to somebody you don't like? Grin

get a bottle of disinfectant and pour it in bin

froubylou · 21/07/2013 20:12

You can buy some powder to put in it. Think its a jeyes fluid one. Every time you put something in the bin dumpa load of that on top.

In the meantime pour a bottle of bleach or strong disinfectant on it to discourage flys.

Tub of Bin Buddy will sort it.

Fakebook · 21/07/2013 20:20

Shit, I did exactly the same thing today. Double bagged it and then put it in a compost bin liner and threw in the bin. I bet my front garden stinks now and our green bins don't go until next Tuesday 😖

missmarplestmarymead · 21/07/2013 20:23

If you have a freezer, you could freeze the carcass and put it in there until the day that the bin men come. I usually do this because you are right, it is an awful smell.

ll31 · 21/07/2013 20:24

Bin bbuddy works well,also jeyes

Oldraver · 21/07/2013 20:51

Yes in future I would freeze it...it would be too smelly now I think.

I have a crate at the bottom of my freezer I keep for this, you have to make sure its bagged pretty well and put it in before it smells.

I freeze leftovers until the night before collection day. Have one of those compostible bags in the far reaches of a corner of the freezer. Absolutely essential in this weather.

GiddyStars · 22/07/2013 18:24

Never, ever thought about freezing leftovers until bin day. MN you are a collective bloody genius Grin

gamerchick · 22/07/2013 18:28

I freeze as well Grin I feel your pain OP my husband put fish guts in the wheely bin 8 days before bin day.. That was fun.

if you can stand it, find the offending bag and stick it in as many bin bags as possible. Put some bleach in the bin and cover with cat litter. It should hold out until collection day.
