Yes, there is a hoe and a hoe, and one of them you dig for diamonds in the ground with and the other, well.

I give up.

Thankfully I should add, we have filters in place.

But I did a double take when my sons were gleefully telling me they were searching for hoes on line.

How old is he cos quite frankly I think any parent of a child under 13 is BU letting their kids play that bloody game. My dsc's (7 & 9) are allowed by mum to play and its the only thing they talk about. It is full on banned in this house

Sparkletastic · 21/07/2013 09:51

It's 'ho' unless you are tilling the soil

Picturesinthefirelight · 21/07/2013 09:54

Eh - I don't understand this. Why do you need filters for googling hoes?

5madthings · 21/07/2013 09:55

I was going to say do you have safe filters on. I just searched 'hoes' on my phone google images...well um interesting.

And bizarrely the first option it comes up with is oages of innappropriately dressed women but then it asks 'or hoes tool/hoes garden tool' but it defaults first of to hoes as women.... Nice.

My boys are 13, 11 and 8 and obsessed with minecraft i dont get it but they love it and its age appropriate and a good game for them.to play.

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 21/07/2013 09:56

A hoe is a tool for digging.

The other kind of hoe is outdated slang which I doubt anyone even uses anymore.

YABU. Minecraft is AWESOME!

staticlunge · 21/07/2013 09:56

There are a lot of unreasonable parents out there then babyhmummy. Most kids around here play, talk, and dream Minecraft.

AnotherWorld · 21/07/2013 09:57

I don't understand Minecraft. What am I missing? We tried it and it looked rubbish.

bumblingbovine · 21/07/2013 09:58

It isn't Minecraft's fault that the word hoe has been used in this way. Teach your sons to use a dictionary website if they doesn't know what a word means and not to used google to search for the meaning of a word

How old are your sons?

Ds is only 8 but he knows that searching google for words can bring up loads of stuff that is not suitable for him to look at. Obviously we have security and filters on the PC he uses but he also understands already understands in in an age appropriate way that the internet is not a toy and that he needs to check with us before he uses it for anything which he does do. I know things may change when he gets older and that your boys may well be beyond this sort of control but you do need to consider how you monitor their use of the internet.

I am not blaming you as this an aspect of parenting that is new and very difficult to get right but you really can't blame a game for using hoe in it's correct context. Maybe blame the people who misappropriated the word in such a vile way

5madthings · 21/07/2013 10:00

If you google hoes you do get interestinh results.

Anyway my boys would only know that a hoe is a garden tool or minecraft tool... Thankfully they havent heard the slang meaning!

MrsKeithRichards · 21/07/2013 10:00

I can't phathom minecraft out but my 7 year old loves it!

DottyDot · 21/07/2013 10:01

What's wrong with hoe? It's a garden tool! A 'ho is different but Minecraft is all about the digging..!

Ds's (11 and 9) have known the meaning of both words for a very long time - nothing to do with Minecraft...

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/07/2013 10:01

What is minecraft? I don't agree with blaming games for teaching children bad things. It's the parents responsibility to ensure the game is suitable.

If you have filters in place I image they were just perusing B and Q website Grin

SparkyTGD · 21/07/2013 10:01

If I google 'hoe' it is images of gardening tools but if I google 'hoes' then something else altogether Hmm

I sit beside DS (8yrs) when he is on internet (so I can interfere if he types in anything that may be dodgy).

bumblingbovine · 21/07/2013 10:02

I do agree though that minecraft should be banned, if only for the sanity of any parent who doesn't want to be bored to death by the endless talk about it (i.e like me)

DS is another Minecraft obsessed child. I really don't see the appeal

5madthings · 21/07/2013 10:03

Yes sparkly same here! The s on the end makes all the difference to google it seems!

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2013 10:07

I bet there are other words that get interesting results. My two year old likes pussies and bunnies. Probably best not to Google those either. A very good argument for good monitoring.

NoComet · 21/07/2013 10:07

If you search 'Hoe' you get wholesome images of a useful garden implement.

If you put 'Hoes' you get a load of scantily dressed flesh.

I don't think you can blame mine craft fore the ability of a certain section of society talking perfectly reasonable words and turning them in to slang for something sexual.

That is one I've never heard before!

5madthings · 21/07/2013 10:17

I agree re filters and monitering. We have controls set up and the pc/tablet are always downstairs and i am im the same room or around, they are monitered. However i shall make sure they dont use my phone to search on as it doesnt have any internet filters on it. They wpuldnt use my phone without asking anyway.

I just asked my boys about the word hoe/hoes only my eldest knew it had another meaning, his answer wss its a tool and i said do you know it has another meaning and he said 'it can be used to mean whore' which he then clarrified as another word for prostitute.he is almost 14 so his understanding is typical of a teen.

They also tend to look in a dictionary to find out meanings, they even gasp... Use an actual paper version!

QuintessentialOldDear · 21/07/2013 10:22

My 11 year old has luckily not grasped the meaning of Hoes.

But I do think it was the plural the searched for. Ds2 is the happy owner of his own ho, that he use in the garden.

I've just googled on your behalf.

Bunnies is fine.

:)

Pussies is NOT !

Shock
AnotherWorld · 21/07/2013 10:37

Imagine the surprise they all got when a friends DS googled Prince Albert images at school during their Victorian topic...

HoneyDragon · 21/07/2013 10:40

Ds once typed in chainsaw. We all went eeeeeew.

DottyDot · 21/07/2013 10:53

I don't understand why they shouldn't know the meanings of words at this kind of age. Ho = slang for = whore = not a nice term for prostitute so don't use it is pretty much what ours know.

Soupqueen · 21/07/2013 11:05

I think OP has her tongue firmly in her cheek....
