to ask how much booze you drink? Do you drink everyday?

Because I have been drinking Pimm's & lemonade or with OJ everyday this week & am starting to think it's habit forming.

I don't normally drink everyday. Can I blame it on the heatwave? A bottle of wine or two on a Friday night (or every 2nd Fri) is normal for me.

I don't want to turn into a 'non-functional' alcoholic like my BIL. On the otherhand my 85 year old grandmother drinks everyday & I wouldn't class her as an alcoholic and or non-functional.

What would you class as having a drink problem/ being an alcoholic?

Thoughts appreciated please.

Usually share 2/3 bottles of wine over the weekend with my partner.

Today have had 3 bottles of crabbies as was at a free do earlier, but that happens rarely.

I drink between 10/14 units a week.

Mintyy · 20/07/2013 19:25

I make a conscious effort not to drink 3 or 4 nights a week, every week.

When I do drink I seem to have quite a large capacity - can easily drink a g&t plus half a bottle of wine - so am probably still over Govt guidelines.

It is something I am very aware of.

countingmyblessings · 20/07/2013 19:27

I didn't touch alcohol during my two pregnancies or when breastfeeding (which was 18 months for both dc).

I personally feel I can handle it & am not at all ratty around the dc. Infact I've been far more chilled out this week. I just feel I'd enjoy another Pimms tomorrow as I've now run out of the bottle I bought at the beginning of this week. Eek!

Perhaps I should go alcohol free Sept til Christmas? It' will be my 30th in January!

I'm also teetotal, May last year I got very drunk on red wine and was sick all the next day. I decided I wasn't a drinker! I don't miss it. my skin looks better and it saves money.

Mrsrobertduvall · 20/07/2013 19:28

I only drink Friday to Sunday, probably a bottle of wine in total.

I have had a few days away with my brother this week who drinks a lot. A bottle a night plus a couple of beers. He said it was like detoxing being with me.

Feminine · 20/07/2013 19:28

One side of my family are very heavy drinkers.

They love it and encourage everyone to join them! Grin

I drink so little it is a constant source of comedy for them.

DH has a glass of wine white/red about 5 times a week.

Sometimes he will drink quite a bit with my family Wink

CheeseFondueRocks · 20/07/2013 19:29

I've not had a drink in over 2 years when we started ttc DC1. I don't miss it, feel much better for it and won't ever go back to it again. I'd describe myself as teetotal now.

squoosh · 20/07/2013 19:31

I probably drink the equivalent of two bottles of wine over a weekend.

I generally don't have any alcohol Mon-Fri.

Justforlaughs · 20/07/2013 19:34

I think I have a strange drink problem, if I don't drink any alcohol I don't miss it at all. Can go for a long period of time without any alcohol, longest I think was 4 years. But if I start I will drink the pub dry! I just cannot have one drink! I tend to drink liqueurs and spirits but the last time I drank, it was 2.5 years since I had had any and about 15 years since I had had a drink of cider and I promptly drank 3 litres of it!

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 20/07/2013 19:38

I tend to have the odd social drink. I have had about 4 alcoholic drinks in total since January. I just don't like drinking much, never have. I was never one to go out and get drunk, even when at Uni.
I do drink far too much coke though and that is something I need to desperately cut down on!

notso · 20/07/2013 19:39

Not very often, I don't think I've had more than three glasses of wine since we went on holiday at Easter.
On the rare occasions we go out with friends I tend to drink a lot though.
My parents and grandparents drink/drank every day though, there is a lot of alcohol problems on DM's side.

SillyTilly123 · 20/07/2013 19:47

I dont drink at all, the last time I had a drink was at my mams wake (or whatever it is called) in June '11 and my cousin kept buying me malibus (3 in all) and my head was spinning. I cannot even remember when I had a drink before that. I dont see the point in drinking unless its to get tipsy (like at a party) and think its an expensive alternative to pop or juice in the house so just dont bother.

PatsysPyjamas · 20/07/2013 19:57

I probably drink 3 bottles of wine a week: one over a couple of nights mid-week and a bottle each on Friday and Saturday. I could -and probably should- lose the mid-week bottle. I could easily drink more on the weekend nights, but don't let myself, unless I am out, which is rare. Ten years ago I (and my friends) would have drunk a bottle of wine each before we went out, so i don't feel it is that bad. I accept it looks bad in a teetotaller's eyes though!

YouStayClassySanDiego · 20/07/2013 20:06

I drink a lot but not every night.

I'm going to die of something and I don't want to be really old and still living under the welfare state in this country despite making provisions for our old age.

I have longevity in the extended family regarding grand parents so I'll take my chances that ill still be pouring a stiff gin in my dotage.

I have two women in mind who I knew who have died young and who were teetotal, again I will take my chances and enjoy that wine.

WMittens · 20/07/2013 20:11

No alcohol for over 13 years.

looseleaf · 20/07/2013 20:15

Do you think I have a problem if I'm having to control my drinking - every night I get such an urge for a glass of wine and whenever around 'drinkers' I get such a happy thrill when I'm offered a glass of wine I don't feel bad about as everyone else is?
I never drink more than half a bottle and never more than 2 bottles a week (DH will just have a glass or two from these and always encourages me so never sees it as a problem)

It's the strength of my longing for wine that worries me and I often have a glass at 6ish when it's just me and the DC.

fatlazymummy · 20/07/2013 20:16

I don't drink at all now but when I did I used to drink 1-2 bottles of wine every 2-3 days. Sometimes I would have vodka instead (at least 1/2 a bottle) or a bottle of Pimms, or similar. Sometimes I would cut back for a while but it would slowly get out of control again. And I was functional. However I do class myself as an alcoholic although I never drank every day, or hit 'rock bottom' ,or had to detox under medical supervision. The fact is I can't just have the odd glass of wine, any more than I can smoke the occasional cigarette. It's all or nothing for me.
I think you're very wise to be aware of your drinking OP. Alcoholism very often does creep up on people.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 20/07/2013 20:17

In the past 7 days

  • 3 have been alcohol free
  • 3 x one drink (glass of wine / a beer)
  • 1 x two drinks.

Pretty typical these days but I still think too much - about 10 units across the week. I used to drink a lot more pre-DC.

MarshaBrady · 20/07/2013 20:19

I don't drink alcohol at home. Just prosecco (usually or champagne), as not keen on wine any more, when socialising with friends. Or out with Dh.

themaltesefalcon · 20/07/2013 20:19

Small glass of white once or twice twice a week, a thimbleful of cognac now and then to toast happy occasions, champers perhaps once a year.

Working in the profession I do, I'm practically a teetotaller. :)

Cakebaker35 · 20/07/2013 20:19

I think the test is, can you stop? If you can easily not drink for a day, a week etc then I'd say you're in control of it, maybe having a slight binge every so often but not an alcoholic. A friend once told me she knew she had a drink problem when she started drinking earlier and earlier every day as she just couldn't wait any longer. She then started to wake up wanting a drink then went to AA. Sounds like you're a long way off that IMO.

whosshe · 20/07/2013 20:20

I drink nearly every day, perhaps a glass of wine with dinner, or a G&T while I cook it. I have the odd day off. On a night out (rare) I will drink a bit more, but not binge. There is something about putting our kid to bed and then hearing the glug glug of a bottle of nice wine that makes me relax and think its mummy and daddy time now. I'm not sure if that's a problem, but it's how it is for me. My level of drinking has reduced as I have got older, and I do like to have wine with food.

DrunkenButterfly · 20/07/2013 20:23

I only drink a bottle of wine roughly once every three weeks, over 4 nights, with some help from DP too. I am genuinely shocked by how much some people drink (not nec on here, but in RL). When I cut down my drinking to the current level I was amazed how much weight I lost, and how much money I saved.

maternitart · 20/07/2013 20:24

I drink 2-4 times a week, one or two drinks at a time, except holidays or very rare nights out.

It's a lot less than I drunk pre-kids.

There was a great thread on this a while back where someone basically said, if you think you're doing well or achieving something not having a drink of an evening, you've probably got a problem and I think that's quite a good maxim.

LilyAmaryllis · 20/07/2013 20:25

I don't drink alcohol at all. DH is teetotal due to past drink problem, so I don't feel like drinking at home solo. I did used to have a drink when out on social occasions but now I'm on medication which I'm not allowed to combine with alcohol.

I think it would be good if you went back to "I don't normally drink every day"... you could say this is a holiday fortnight where you are going to drink every day, but after a certain date go back to days when you do drink and days when you don't.
