To think BT have slowed down my wifi just before flogging a faster service

For the last 2 weeks our Internet service at home has seemed unusually slow. Didn't think to much of it until BT called last night and tried to sell me their new, much faster service for double the costs!

Not sure if it's a coincidence or that they are being outrageously cunning?

I don't know but I've always suspected this

It's the same with Sky TV. Sudden intermittent signal and then BINGO! The roll out a new HD box.

Having said that, I just upgraded to Infinity because the hub couldn't cope with all the computers, phones and games consoles logging on at once.

Hamwidgeandcheps · 17/07/2013 00:22

Yanbu. Orange tried to tell me my nb is slow and flog me the fibreoptic whatever's. if it is I haven't noticed and I'm too stingy!

softlysoftly · 17/07/2013 00:25

Do an online speedtest and demand to ferry the speed you are already paying for.

wonkylegs · 17/07/2013 00:34

YY to softlys post
We've just upgraded our package & speed (v.high) with Virgin and will be paying half of what we were before hmm

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 17/07/2013 00:39

Is it Infinity they are offering you?
If so hold out on getting it if you can. We were offered it via a phone call, at a charge, and I said no.
6 weeks later they sent me a letter offering it to me for free as long as I remained on a contract for 18 months. The contract worked out about £12 cheaper a year too, bonus!

GalaxyDefender · 17/07/2013 07:50

You do have to be careful with these sorts of things - BT did exactly the same thing to my parents, and to me, but all they succeeded in doing was making both of us switch Grin

I'm paying half what I was before now, for better speeds.

Also, it should be in your contract's T&Cs that if you go below a certain speed consistently (for a week, iirc), they have to either fix it or you can leave the contract with no penalties. This is what I threatened BT with when we had initial start-up problems they refused to acknowledge.

samandi · 17/07/2013 08:07

I wouldn't put it past them.

londonrach · 17/07/2013 08:21

I would never got with BT now even if they offered free computers, ipads with their service. We had six months of hell with them. I got through three routers and spoke to the technical department on average three times a day. I kept a log after we been with them a month. Very glad to pay to leave them. With plusnet at the moment. Does what it says on the box. No idea if fast but can watch iplayer with no problems. Cost 24 per month including unlimited broadband, line rental and all phones calls 24 7 as long as under 1 hour and not 0845 numbers. My experience of BT means I agree with op.

ProfYaffle · 17/07/2013 08:22

My Dad's on BT and also convinced they're doing the same to him.

Meglet · 17/07/2013 08:56

This has got me wondering too. They've called me a few times and a) I can't afford it and b) I haven't got the time to faff about checking the small print. My wifi is very slow at the moment Hmm.

Ihatemytoes · 17/07/2013 09:39

They kept trying to get me to upgrade to Infinity. I said I wasn't bothered, then all of a sudden they were offering it as standard, at no additional cost!

ninilegsintheair · 17/07/2013 12:10

We're also on BT and wondering the same. Have had several phonecalls trying to flog us the Infinity service, but for what we use our broadband for (checking emails, shopping so not heavy users) it just isn't worth it. That said, in the last few weeks our connection has been very very eye-scratchingly slow.

We're looking to switch.

nipersvest · 17/07/2013 12:11

everyone i know with bt is complaining how crap it is at the moment.

mumofthemonsters808 · 17/07/2013 12:14

This does not surprise me, I was on a much cheaper package and kept receiving over usage charges despite not using it excessively. I think they purposely charge for over usage so that the infinity unlimited package becomes more attractive.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 17/07/2013 12:18

I asked about their TV package and was told I would have to upgrade as my speed was too slow Hmm

My parents have the same and have had bt vision for years now and live one street away. I detest them but have problems with companies finding my address just now,

Rulesgirl · 17/07/2013 12:32

It depends where you live. We can't get any faster than 1 mg here as we are very very rural and some areas do not get it at all.
