To wonder how some people cope well in the heat and others don't.

I'm totally wiped out with the heat Blush I've spent the afternoon on bed with a splitting headache feeling like I do when I have heatstroke. I drink plenty of fluids and wear a hat etc. I don't stay in full sun, but it still gets me.

Ds2 is the same, but ds1 and dh just potter on as normal Envy

I see people out and about quite happy, whereas I'm knackered, sweating and trying to find drinks and paracetamol.

I'm happy that the weather's nice, but wish I could cope better.

I can't cope with the heat either. Celtic genes, very thick hair, don't sweat very much. Average weight.

My dh is olive skinned and sweats loads, and he can't cope with the cold. He's copes well in very hot weather.

Mumsyblouse · 16/07/2013 19:26

I don't hate the heat, but that's because I don't go out in it except early morning/later in day. I am amazed how many people are on the beach at the hottest time of the day or walking around shopping at that time. I know for some people, it is unavoidable, I have to walk between buildings at work but it's quite pleasant, I go slow and I never deliberately go out in it all day- don't need suncream even as only out about 20/30 min total.

bumblingbovine · 16/07/2013 19:30

I'm very overweight but don't find this weather unbearably hot. What I love about it is
Lovely evenings with windows and doors open
Many fewer clothes to put on - I really hate all those layers in winter
Just generally having blue skies

I have a limit though. Around 30oc or more is definitely too hot but around 24oC to 28 is pretty much perfect for me. Like another poster said though I try and stick to the shade an maximise the breeze at home by opening almost every window or door and use a fan in my bedroom at night
I also move slowly (my natural speed anyway so no difficulty there :)).

fieldfare · 16/07/2013 19:30

I love it.
I sweat loads but it doesn't really bother me, I just have an extra cool shower. I love the feeling of the sun warming my bones and even took the kids out for a walk afer lunch to get them to sleep. Pushing a double buggy 4 miles was interesting but the slight breeze was lovely.

bettycocker · 16/07/2013 19:32

FrameyMcFrame Yes, I'm due in a couple of days, so have a slight temperature already! I am so pleased that I have a stone cottage with thick walls. It makes it bearable in here.

FriskyHenderson · 16/07/2013 19:37

I am red and sweaty. I don't remember getting red and sweaty pre-children, post DC1 I went to Italy and was red and sweaty while surrounded by people in tights/scarves/coats. People said it was because they were acclimatised. I was not.

At the moment I'm having 3 showers a day, staying in the house with the curtains closed and windows open, and I'm still red and sweaty. If I have to collect DC then I just get even redder and even sweatier.

My face is just red and sweaty and greasy Sad

valiumredhead · 16/07/2013 19:42

Oh mine too Sad

Ledkr · 16/07/2013 19:45

I am well known for my sun seeking abilities and a hankering to move to hotter climes.
However, I'm being a right wimp too and have all but come to a standstill.
We are going away Sunday and I would just like one cooler day to pack and clean the house a bit.
Not helped by all the end of term running around, a thyroid problem and hospital appointments.
Car buggered so bussing to work ten miles away which is torture.
I'm constantly sticky and smelly and have become one of those knobheadd who say "innit hot?" About seventy two times a day Angry - my red face.
Dd2 is a red head and despite being obvious she's uncomfortable stil likes to carry on with toddler life including wearing her thick long sleeved pepper pig top Hmm

goingmadinthecountry · 16/07/2013 19:48

I like it. I don't feel too hot yet and have kept my arms covered for work. I can do hot or cold, just not miserable and damp.

valiumredhead · 16/07/2013 19:50

I am watching ds and Dh play badminton in the garden and thinking how?

ILikeBirds · 16/07/2013 19:58

I've always loved the heat (May born). Weather is just perfect at the moment. A touch warmer would be ok too, not quite hot enough here to be sure of going out without a jacket/jumper.

I normally get really bad period pains but it disappears almost completely when the temperature is over 25. When I lived in Missouri I didn't suffer from period pain at all in the summer. I was obviously born into the wrong country climate wise.

Pity the other half has Viking blood and struggles much above 20.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 16/07/2013 19:59

I'm working in a very busy school nursery, tomorrow 35+ children.

No fans! it is hell for the children and us staff.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/07/2013 19:59

I thought I was like this last week then got a rash..I had scarlet fever..great timing!

Still, not loving the heat now I am better.

valiumredhead · 16/07/2013 20:05

School should just finish now, feel SO sorry for the teachers!

Meglet · 16/07/2013 20:09

The air con broke at work today, I was fucking thrilled Grin. Obviously had to listen to everyone else moaning though.

It would have to get considerably hotter for me to start grumbling.

I have a spring in my step when it's hot, everything is less hassle.

SizzleSazz · 16/07/2013 20:16

I'm January born and love the heat. Always cold in winter and have 5 layers on.
Definitely more comfortable now I have lost 3 stone but previously still loved the heat.
British genes through and through. Luckily dc's don't seem to mind the heat either

We have downstairs bedrooms in a stone built house so able to sleep (still have a duvet on!)

SelectAUserName · 16/07/2013 20:17

I'm really lucky. I work in an air conditioned office which is pleasantly cool but not draughty (hardly ever happens!); our house is naturally cool, which admittedly is a pain in winter but a godsend right now; my car has aircon and where we have our garden table and chairs is shady for the majority of the day. I also usually feel the cold so it's really pleasant to have warm sun for a change.

We had lunch in a beer garden on Saturday and that was hot as initially there was no shade, the back of my neck was soon sweating and my hair started getting wet (lovely... Grin ) so as soon as some other people left we moved to a table with an umbrella.

The hardest thing is keeping SelectASpaniel cool, poor lad.

FoundAChopinLizt · 16/07/2013 20:29

Haven't read whole thread.

Has anyone mentioned thyroid function yet? If you're hot when others aren't, or cold when others aren't get your thyroid checked.

Too cold can be sign of under active thyroid, too hot can be over active. Both common in women of child bearing age.

minouminou · 16/07/2013 20:38

I loathe any temperature above 18C, and I mean....I loathe it.
Swollen ankles, almost fainting, ratty as hell, low blood pressure, racing heart, the works.

The colder the better for me.
Everyone who's saying it might be Scandinavian genes that make you hate the heat might be in for a surprise, though, as it could actually be Middle Eastern genes.
There's a mitochondrial DNA type known as J (Jasmine in Brian Sykes' 2001 book The Seven Daughters of Eve) that, it's thought, had a higher than average body temp because of a change in one stage of the metabolic cycle.

I'm one of these.....I tan up a storm if I forget sunscreen, certainly look the part....and want to kick ANYONE who tells me to enjoy this filthy heat right up the arse.

We've got lots of Mediterranean chums, and I can see how they genuinely suffer in the cold....I don't sit there telling them to ignore their Raynaud's and roll around making snow angels and breathe in the frosty air because it should make them feel ALIVE!!! ALIVE, DAMN YOU!!!

And relax.

minouminou · 16/07/2013 20:40

HAS a higher than average temp, that is.
We're still here, still too bleedin' 'ot.

minesapintofwine · 16/07/2013 20:45

I love the IDEA of heat and sun. And when I feel ok I like being out in it chilling etc. But when it goes on too long I end up vomiting, feeling wiped out etc. This is my current state. It was the same back in June at the end of a hot week. Dt2 is the same. We both have dark hair. Dt1 is white blond and fair and is fine if a bit sweaty. It doesn't take a lot for me to work out its dehydration as I don't drink enough fluids anyway and dt2 usually drinks loads so hard to up his intake much! And its like a vicous circle as now can't stomach fluids or salty stuff! Did nearly knock dh out the other day when he blamed my 'illness' on the heat. Though i was known as 'sicky' in my youth and dt2 is the same frequent vomiters don't take much to cause it! Horrible ain't it op. Im just drinking water now and hoping for a thunderstorm. Will miss the sun but not able to enjoy it now anyway

WiredCarpet · 16/07/2013 20:46

OP I know what you mean, although I dont suffer like you do, that skinds awful Sad.

My partner works in the sun, all day long. I dont know how he does it. Its really hard graft too, and then he gets home helps put the babies to bed them choosez to go out running for an hour

Talking of fainting, I love spending time outside when its hot and sunny, in fact I seek it out. But only if there is shade a can sit in. I cannot handle direct sunlight for more than 10 mins, I feel dizzy and out of sorts its most unpleasant.

I cam work hard, long hours, run and push myself. So Im definitely not delicate.

I just cant handle doing those things including sitting in the direct sun.

RunRabbit · 16/07/2013 21:01

I hate the sun. Actually hate it. Wish it would go somewhere and die Angry

I hate being sweaty and the heat makes me very, very unreasonably cranky.

I usually stay indoors, curtains drawn, AC on.

As far as the theories go. I am a Summer baby AND my family come from a hot climate. I feel like a failure to my ancestors Sad.

austenozzy · 16/07/2013 21:10

IMO, it's a number of things, many of which have been said above. For a start, we have short heat waves instead of extended periods of hot weather, so we're simply not used to it. I went to live in Queensland for a while, and it was a shock to the system leaving here from a snowbound Heathrow and landing in a 38 degree, humid Gold Coast the next day! After a couple of weeks I was fine, having acclimatised properly.

If you're an anxious or self conscious person, that won't help. My dad's a bit of a panciker, and he really struggles in the heat, and won't slow down, calm down and chill out.

Weight is another - I've put on some weight in recent years, and I really feel the humidity badly.

MovingForward0719 · 16/07/2013 21:19

I actually seem to swell up so that clothes that normally fit me feel tighter! I am not massively overweight but really miss being skinny when it is like this. Also get very tired and grumpy
