To feel glad/relieved Ireland is voting through Abortion Bill

Its only a bare minimum - in the case of a woman's life being threatened - but it is also a massive sea change, on this sensitive issue. The vote in the Lower House was 127:31.

(Mary Kenny wrote very interestingly in the Times about it - saying that although the Church has played a role, much of the opposition was to do with Ireland's fear of "depopulation". Partly because of Ireland's history - famine, mass emigration. But also due to a rural pro-natalist mindset. In agricultural communities another child is "another pair of hands". In cities, another child is "another mouth to feed".)

Koba Hmm her life wasn't in danger when she requested the abortion and we have already been through the fact that the new legislation will fix the 'grey areas' where a doctor may have been concerned about what stage they are allowed to terminate at.

KobayashiMaru · 18/07/2013 13:16

It doesn't matter how many times you say it, you're still wrong. The new legislation will fix fuck all.
Why don't you go SPUC?

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:22

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. Most people think it's better than nothing. I have no idea what SPUC means.

squoosh · 18/07/2013 13:24

Living in Ireland how can you not know who SPUC are?

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 13:25

You don't know what SPUC means? I find that hard to believe, somehow. Although maybe you prefer the Youth Defence fascists instead.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:30

I didn't realise she was talking about an organisation - she said 'go SPUC'.

You're getting a bit childish now skyler.

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 13:35

Really? I was just about to post that I oughtn't to have crossed out the word fascists. They are fascists. And have links with all sorts of repellant European fascist organisations.

KobayashiMaru · 18/07/2013 13:37

Skyler, did you see their site got hacked last week? It showed all the details of how they are funded by american extremists with very dodgy backgrounds, The type that bomb abortion clinics and shoot doctors.
I very much doubt that someone with such strong views doesn't know what SPUC is. Disingenuous at best. Hmm

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:40

No, the fact that you are accusing me of being a fascist at all.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:43

Wow Koba, even more accusations - trolling, disingenuous. What are you going to throw at me next? Skyler has just accused me of being a fascist so you're in good company anyway...

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 13:44

If you support Youth Defence, you are supporting a fascist organisation. In my book that makes you a fascist. Perhaps you'd like to take this opportunity to clarify your opinion on Youth Defence.

Yes, Koba I saw that. Not surprised, although it was good to have it out in the open. Also read that really interesting Hot Press article from 20 years ago.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:50

Where have I said I support Youth Defense? You're the one who brought them up! I don't know anything about them - I would have to google.

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 13:51

You don't know anything about Youth Defence?? And you claim to live in Ireland? And have strong anti-choice opinions. I'm with Koba - disingenuous at best Confused Hmm

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 13:54

Where have I claimed to live in Ireland?

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 13:58

Apologies, claim to be Irish.

actually she called YD fascists, not you. However if feel like thats the same thing, thats your own business.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 14:05

skyler, where?

The intent was clear Koba - she was associating me with what she considers to be a fascist organisation.

On other threads you've stated that you are Irish. So unless your nationality has changed....Confused

I'm not sure what thread that was skyler - I tend not to give out too much personal information on here. For that reason MaryZ I'd rather not answer your questions about where Im from etc. I would like to point out though that it is possible for someone to be a certain nationality without being familiar/affiliated with all of that country's organisations.

Re being anti-abortion full-stop. No, but I am quite conservative about the circumstances under which it should be available.

slug · 18/07/2013 14:37

Don't be facetious bumbly. No one should ever have to travel abroad to have a simple medical procedure.

skylerwhite · 18/07/2013 14:41

Well if you're an Irish woman aged between 20 and 70, and opposed to abortion, I find it disingenuous in the extreme that you claim to not have heard of YD.

Fair enough if you don't want to say where you're from/living, but you did state on another thread that you were Irish.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2013 14:41

It's not always a 'simple medical procedure' . I'm not sure why you think I'm being facetious.
