when going round blind bends along country roads/ single track roads are idiots?

stood in my horse field and there is a single track road with blind bends and I can hear people beeping their horn obviously to warn others. what concerns me is people seem to think they can just continue at a normal speed ( or faster!!!) down these roads just because they think they have sounded the horn and if no one sounds back it must be clear.

they seem to forget that horses dont come with horns!

Two cars travelling at a very low speed around a blind bend could cause and lot of damage. Maybe they're not idiots, just trying to be considerate?

SomethingProfound · 15/07/2013 00:59

Yes they are idiots for trying to prevent an accident Confused, and for using a horn for its intended purpose!

Fenton · 15/07/2013 01:04

Now, I haven't read the Highway Code for a while but I think that's one of the times you are supposed to sound your horn,

The idiots are the ones who toot randomly at their friends on the street causing a hazard when everyone sensible is looking around for what the potential hazard i.e necessity to beep actually is.

Fenton · 15/07/2013 01:05

I agree they should slow down on blind bends though.

jammiedonut · 15/07/2013 03:11

You can't see them though? How do you know they're speeding up? Yabu to criticise use of horns for their intended purpose, but slowing down would ultimately be safer of course!

MissMarplesBloomers · 15/07/2013 05:16

YABU

Sorry if it frightens your horse.

wanderings · 15/07/2013 06:17

It's one of the very rare legitimate uses of the horn. Even if you are approaching a bend at a sensible speed, somebody coming the other way might not be.

(Although I do use it very sparingly for this purpose, it seems a shame to disturb the peace and quiet of the countryside.)

LeoTheLateBloomer · 15/07/2013 06:29

I completely agree with you!! I don't mind if they beep and are going slowly. It's the fuckers who carry on at normal speed and think it's ok because they've beeped Angry Like you say, horses can't beep back.

LoveBeingUpAt4InTheMorning · 15/07/2013 06:30

I think the ops issue is that they don't slow down and rely solely on the horn forgetting others with horns might be coning

TheFallenNinja · 15/07/2013 06:47

Keep horse off road or fit horn to horse. Takes the problem away.

McGeeDiNozzo · 15/07/2013 06:58

Would you rather they not beep their horn and just come at you out of the blue?

Scared horses are better than dead ones.

AnneTwacky · 15/07/2013 07:32

YANBU about slowing down on the bends.

YABVU about not beeping the horn going round a blind bend. As PP have said this is what the horn is intended for.

BrawToken · 15/07/2013 07:39

This is one of the few times I do use my horn, gives folk a chance to get out my way :D

AgathaF · 15/07/2013 08:04

And another thing..... why don't horse owners pick up their horses crap from in the road. I clean up after my dog, clean up after your horse.

CloudsAndTrees · 15/07/2013 08:18

The problem is that they continue at normal speed, not that they beep horns. At least you know they are coming when you're on your horse.

GoSuckEggs · 15/07/2013 09:01

i have no problem what as ever with the sounding of the horn. my horse is very very safe on the road and takes no notice at all. My problem is when they continue at the same speed assuming it is all clear because they have not heard a beep back!

GoSuckEggs · 15/07/2013 09:02

oh give over AgathaF!

valiumredhead · 15/07/2013 09:06

You are taught to do that in your driving test to warn on coming traffic you are comingConfused

GoSuckEggs · 15/07/2013 09:37

yes of course. I have no problem with the beeping. i do it myself.

It is bloody annoying and dangerous when people just beep and then continue at same speed, or go even faster, when they dont hear a beep back from another car, so they assume the road is clear.

It is dangerous for both horse riders and bikes and people walking because we dont have the means to beep back to tell the car we are there, so they come flying round the corner assuming it is clear...

MissMarplesBloomers · 15/07/2013 18:41

Well they are the eejits then, I beep to alert folks hidden round the bend I am coming (slowly) I don't expect a response, it's a warning not a call out!
