to be perplexed at the Matt finish adorning some cars now?

ive seen a few matte black cars and now a red one.

the red one was on a car being used to advertise Matt paint for cars... Hmm

it didn't seem to be much of an aadvertisement tbh, it looked awful!

if I spend that much on a car, I want it to at least glisten in the sunshine! and if it was an old banger (as the black two were) why spend more money on an even worse paint job?

AIBU or do people actually like it?!

Different people like different things - I'm underwhelmed.

Was it definitely matt, or satin?

And it may not have been paint, it may have been a vinyl wrap or plastidip.

It looks nice in a showroom but gets scratched to shit in about five seconds in reality.

Might be a wrap - some car enthusiasts get their vehicles wrapped to protect the real colour underneath from the usual dinks and scratches!

On another note, we went to France earlier this year and some cars were covered in black velvet stuff!

it was def paint because one of tge black ones was scratched to crap at the back and you coukd clearly see the metalic green paint underneath.

it was matte not satin - it was like it had literally sucked all of the joy out of tge world.

like driving behind a black hole

I think I've seen a black one. I thought it must have been halfway through a paint job and the owner had run out of money - it looked like an undercoat.

I have a car that's in a Matt finish. It's been like that since 1978 so I'm not changing now.

YANBU. This is a really big craze where I live in the Middle East, and lots of people have more money than sense. The cars live under a permanent thin coating of dust (even with low-paid slaves to wash them daily for you) and they look nice for precisely three minutes after leaving the showroom.

We also do a lovely line in 'custom' two tone spray jobs on Rolls Royces and Aston Martins out here. Tis classy, I tell you. Hmm

matte black cars have been big with footballers/rappers and anyone else with more money than sense and taste for about 4 or 5 years.

It os known as murdering out the car amd on most cars it makes it look ugly and slab like.

That makes it sound more like wrap or dip to be honest - scratches on painted cars are unlikely to uniformly go through the clearcoat, pigment, then just stop at the previous pigment layer.

It os known as murdering out the car...

That's not limited to matt black though (it could be gloss black, or a mix of matt and gloss), and usually extends to blacking wheels, windows and interior.

We also do a lovely line in 'custom' two tone spray jobs on Rolls Royces and Aston Martins out here. Tis classy, I tell you.

I'm not quite sure what that comment is aiming to say; two tone paint is a factory options on Rolls Royces.

YANBU to be perplexed at how people can think it looks good, but YAB a bit U to think the colour of other people's cars is any of your business. (It is ugly though, especially that tiny cross-hatch black, when it's on a massive Range Rover thingy trying to intimidate you by driving up your exhaust pipe.)

If carbon fibre looks a bit like the safety hatching on metal steps/platforms only very tiny, then, yes, I do mean carbon fibre. Is it important that I know the exact name?

Not really, but "it's ugly" kind of misses the point (of real carbon fibre, rather than a shitty wrap).

Saw a car with this finish today - in deepest most rural Fife. It was an unusual shade of deep pinky orange, and definitely the only matt paint job around.

This isn't something new. Cars come as standard in a matt finish and you pay extra for metallic/pearlescent, normally in the region of £500-700.

Matt/gloss isn't the same as metallic/non-metallic - e.g. you could have non-metallic red with a gloss finish.
