She's come off while mountain biking and I got a call from her boyfriend to come asap. Apparently they have put her on a spinal board. she'd Been out with her bf, my dniece, a friend and step niece and nephew all aged 4-8. My and dh dropped everything and drove an hour down to meet them. Dh now driving kids home to feed and put to bed. Boyf taking bikes home then coming to meet me. I got given directions to the access point the ambulance is getting her from and am here. Ambulance is here, specialist response unit and four by four but no one to be seen. What the hell to do now? My husband is a cycle enthusiast, and does mountain endurance races. He has never so far been injured on a mountain, but once cycled down hill (fast) and a car cut him off and turned into a road (silly bint claimed she did not see him) and he flew over her bonnet and landed on his back. He hit his head really badly, and were taken by ambulance to hospital. The frame of his bike was actually cut in two. It looked really bad, and he was bleeding from his head. But he phoned me a few hours later and asked me to pick him up. He was fine. Just felt a little bruised. I hope your sister is ok.

Fenton · 13/07/2013 21:23

I won't go into much detail here but I have two miraculous escape/survival stories of two very keen cyclists - my brother and an old boyfriend.

As others have said, awake and talking is very positive.

Thinking of you all.

Another one here with finger crossed and hoping spinal board is just a precaution.

FWIW I fell downstairs a few months ago and couldn't move my legs. DH called 999 and I was taken out on a spinal board and rushed to A and E. Thankfully within an hour my legs started working again - some sort of spasm or shock I guess. So maybe they are just being careful. I hope so.

A good friend of mine was also involved in an accident like that a few years ago. She was really out of it for a few weeks (skull fracture) but was 100% within 6 months. She's about to start her 3rd year of uni and is a straight-A student.

I hope the news is good for you all. Very scary but you can deal with anything together once you know.

I had a motorbike accident years ago - I walked around for nearly a week with a broken neck, I only went in because I thought a bout of whiplash didn't seem to be getting better and I had odd tingling and numbness develop. I had 2 broken bones in my neck and some inflammation of my spinal cord - I am completely fine and it once it healed it was no bother really. So even some frightening terms being mentioned can turn out much better than you expect.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it looked shocking but she won't even need a trip to plastics, I hope she's home with her dc soon Thanks and Wine for you to help the adrenalin trough.

polosareverynice · 14/07/2013 01:06

Hopefully your sister is okay hand hold xx

SweetHoneyBeeeeee · 14/07/2013 04:50

In the car now being driven home by dh. Got sister home at about 4am. She's had about 50 stitches in her face but no broken bones. Has to rest up and go back to get the damage looked at again when swelling has reduced. Been a very long night but happy she is ok(ish). Going to sleep then go back about 11 to help out with kids, shopping etc. Thanks for all your kind messages

Great news!
You must be so relieved.

SweetHoneyBeeeeee · 14/07/2013 19:02

She is doing ok today, thanks all. Pretty out of it with the painkillers they have given her but managing to sip water through a straw, and made a good attempt at some milkshake, smoothie and even sorbet. Not loads but enough to stop me worrying so much. We did a big liquid food shop then took kids and dog out so she could sleep, then went back cleaned house and fed my niece while the others were taken home. Just got back now, left her with boyfriend to look after. Have organised each of us to have a couple of days off work this week ti make sure she is looked after and school run/dog walk/house chores done. Exhausted but pleased she is doing better than expected. Paramedics said yesterday she would be in for a few days - I think as many predicted it looked a lot worse than it was - boyfriend had to leave the room when she was being cleaned/stitched and I needed a chair/water to keep from passing out - not squeamish at all and this was my first experience of something of this type making me feel ill - there was basically a 2 inch hole in her face right through to her mouth and her smile had split on one side Sad . They have stitched her up really well though so hopefully nothing further needed other than natural healing but we'll find out next week.

Time for wine

(hugs)

Fenton · 14/07/2013 19:20

I'm not squeamish either but had my head between my knees at the surgery when bf was having his head stitched up by a Greek doctor who I'm pretty sure was Elvis. Hmm

It's the shock of it all more than anything.

Glad she's doing ok.
