DH, our 2 kids and I went to the beach earlier.

While we were loading the boot one of the neighbour's kids was out the front and asked if he could come with us.

We only have a 4 seater car, so I said that I was happy for him to join us, but he'd have to get his mum to drop him off and collect him as we didn't have room in the car.

He goes off and my neighbour then appears - why can't I take him, he can squeeze in in the middle, it's not far, you won't be going very fast, if you go the back way you won't have to use the main road, there's plenty of room if your kids don't have their booster seats. All said in front of her son and my kids so I'm now cast as a heartless bitch for refusing to take her son to the beach

We have 4 seats and 4 seat belts. It's my licence and my insurance. End of discussion as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone would think I'd crapped on her doorstep, not offered to look after her son for a hours

YANBU- the cheeky caaaah. Angry

SanityClause · 13/07/2013 15:17

You were right not to take her child, but obviously she doesn't agree, so there's not much that can be done about it, really.

Not really helpful, I know.

bleedingheart · 13/07/2013 15:18

YANBU

YANBU.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 13/07/2013 15:19

More cheek than a baboon's arse!

You did the right thing, she however should be ashamed of herself for being so bloody rude.

freddiefrog · 13/07/2013 15:20

No, I know there's not much I can do. Just ranting really Grin

Yanbu, rule in our car is no belt no lift, adults and kids alike.

Delayingtactic · 13/07/2013 15:21

Stuff her. I'd have probably said in front of her DS that I wasn't willing to risk his life just so his mum could laze about for a few hrs.

starfishmummy · 13/07/2013 15:21

Yanbu

freddiefrog · 13/07/2013 15:25

rule in our car is no belt no lift, adults and kids alike.

Same here

She's a bit more relaxed about stuff like that, but it doesn't mean I have to be.

Safety issues is one part of it, but I'm only insured for 4 and I don't want points on my licence either

YANBU.

And windy back roads are more dangerous than main roads, ffs.

elfycat · 13/07/2013 15:32

YANBU

We have the same rule about seat belts and booster seats as appropriate.

Once upon a time, a very long time ago we all crammed into cars (remembers 7 in a mini-clubman 25 years ago) but it's a different world now and I wouldn't tolerate anyone letting my DDs do that now.

zoraqueenofzeep · 13/07/2013 15:40

How rude of her!!!!!!!!!!!!! She's the only one that needs to be feeling bad about this, yanbu.

GlitterFingers · 13/07/2013 15:46

Yanbu she soon would of moan if there had been an accident and he was hurt. I can't stand people who are ignorant about car safety

WireCat · 13/07/2013 15:48

Yanbu.

Also, you'd get done if the police caught you.

Not to mention what if there was a car accident.

Tommy · 13/07/2013 15:49

OMG - she obviously has no concern for the safety of her child or your legal position if you were stopped by the police Hmm

freddiefrog · 13/07/2013 17:41

OMG - she obviously has no concern for the safety of her child

Or mine. She wanted me to take my kids' booster seats out as well.

I just wouldn't ask someone to do that, let alone get snotty when refused.

Elfycat, possibly even longer ago than you can remember, we crammed fourteen into a Morris Oxford inluding two in the boot, and happily drove around in and out of town. We all ended up very respectable and sensible, doctors, vets, teachers and one of us even became the distinguished Dean of a northern cathedral.

But the OP is absolutely NBU.

kalidanger · 13/07/2013 17:44

I want to go to the beach Sad

freddiefrog · 13/07/2013 17:49

We used to cram in my dad's clapped out estate car. The fights over whose turn it was to sit in the boot used to get quite vicious.

Wouldn't do it now though

I remember one time when my mum saw some of my friends at a bus stop and offered to give them a lift. We were gangly teenagers and there were some arms and legs hanging out of windows for a while.

Wouldn't dream of doing it now, and absolutely she should have been thanking you for the kind offer.

I sometimes squeeze an extra person in if we are going a short way slowly, but I guess I'm alone.

Eyesunderarock · 13/07/2013 18:18

I have a friend who is a police officer, we were students together. He came round one evening a year into the job in tears. RTA and he'd been told to find the missing toddler. So he was looking around the car when the other PC gave him a shove and said 'No, up the road about 10m.'
He was sitting on his nan's lap and went through the windscreen.

When I learned to drive years later, I have never, and will never, give a lift to anyone without having enough seatbelts.
