Oh yeah, nbu kid will be fine

LIZS · 12/07/2013 16:23

I wouldn't have been happy if someone gave ds one at 5.

mynameisslimshady · 12/07/2013 16:24

I wouldn't buy a nerf gun for someone elses child at all. I usually buy art sets or clothes or stick money in a card.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 12/07/2013 16:24

My Ds had one of those at 2.5

He's only just worked out how to fire it and he's 4 now but id have no issue with it

BigBoobiedBertha · 12/07/2013 16:26

It's fine. DS2 had one at 6

LimeLeaffLizard · 12/07/2013 16:29

Apart from puzzles, I find buying the recommended age of toy is best. I wouldn't buy a nerf gun for someone elses child either - not unless I knew the parents very well. We've been given a couple but ime they tend to give half an hour of fun and then never be used again.

Does he like lego? Bit more neutral. Or colouring stuff.

ouryve · 12/07/2013 16:30

I wouldn't want someone to buy a nerf gun for my 9yo, never mind a 5yo.

monicalewinski · 12/07/2013 16:31

I only really look at age ratings if it's for very small children, especially if it might have small parts with it. The age ratings are usually too high IMO, the manufacturer/retailers have to be overly careful in case they're sued for something. Nerf gun for 5 year old is ok, if the parents don't approve they don't have to let him play with it yet.

pigletmania · 12/07/2013 16:31

Yes buy it, it looks fun. It's no a replica gun fgs, some people are so uptight

pigletmania · 12/07/2013 16:33

Ouryre oh dear, it's a nerf gun not an assault rifle, do you have Robles with water pistols and super soakers

pigletmania · 12/07/2013 16:33

Problem doh

LadyBryan · 12/07/2013 16:36

My issue isn't that its a replica gun but that they bloody hurt if they hit you in the face Grin

mynameisslimshady · 12/07/2013 16:40

Its precisely because some people have a problem with them that I wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't buy a 12 rated dvd or game that I would allow my child to watch/play either because the parent of the recipient needs to make that call, not me.

witchface · 12/07/2013 18:04

I got one for a work colleague at christmas and they come out fast! I wouldnt want one for my dd as i wouldnt want my stuff wrecked or to be hit with one.

WilsonFrickett · 12/07/2013 18:09

I wouldn't have given my DS a Nerf gun at 5 because I wouldnt be confident he could follow our 'rules' - no firing at people's faces or at screens. By 6.5 he was a bit more steady so he got one for his Christmas and has been fine. Can you check with the parent?

inchoccyheaven · 12/07/2013 18:11

Buy he will love it Grin

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 12/07/2013 18:11

I wouldn't buy a Nerf gun as a gift for someone elses child.
I would go for craft toys, playdoh type toys, books and fun board games for 5 year olds (I have a 6 year old DD and the above have gone down well with class mates - boys and girls).

CHJR · 12/07/2013 18:17

I would never give any kind of toy gun to someone else's child, not so much because of the danger (not high in Nerf guns!) as because so many parents worry about the glorification of weaponry etc etc. True, I gave my own DC water pistols, but wouldn't have gone any further. And when SIL gave DS1 Nerf guns (at 11, though, not 5!!!) I was a bit put out but didn't confiscate it (not that DS would have let me by then LOL). But I think it's not a safe choice in terms of how the parent will feel about it, and anyway 5 is too young! even though most 5yo will love it! How's that for waffling?

EarlyIntheMorning · 12/07/2013 18:19

No, don't do it. They can actually be quite painful.

Lovetea · 12/07/2013 19:51

No, please don't buy this gun! Their horrid...my DS6 received one for Xmas and it went in the bin!
