to be sick and tired of military helicopters thundering low-down over the house at midnight?

Three nights in a row now, both at around midnight. Flying very low over the house at all hours of day and night too. I know how those under the flight path at LHR feel now!

I know we live fairly near a base (about 15 minutes from here) and I know they are probably on manouvres/training but even so, I think it's a bit much.

You don't live near raf northolt do you? I'm viewing a house near there on Saturday! I do live under the heathrow flight path though, so perhaps I won't mind so much.

ajandjjmum · 09/07/2013 18:51

I didn't think they were allowed to do low flying at night - although I suppose they've got to practise! Sad

saintmerryweather · 09/07/2013 18:53

where should they practise night flying then?

LynetteScavo · 09/07/2013 18:55

They are allowed to do what ever they want apparently. Hmm

We used to have them over our house, and neighbors complained lots. We are no where near any bases, so I've no idea what all that's about. A Chinook did appear to land in someones back garden once, and I did wonder if it was a pilot popping home. Grin

XBenedict · 09/07/2013 18:57

We get them thundering over our house occasionally to as we're fairly close to Salibury Plain. I bloody love it, very exciting! Grin

monicalewinski · 09/07/2013 18:58

They have to keep their night flying current, in winter it can be done earlier in the night - in summer it can't.

They're not exactly loud though - living at the end of a runway next to a fast jet base is LOUD!!

Purplehonesty · 09/07/2013 19:02

Not exactly loud ??? We get raf jets over the house all the time as we live near a bombing range and they shake the house!
Oh and they always rock up at dds nap time whenever that may be.
Sometimes get them late at night but not often it tends to be search and rescue choppers if its late as we live near the sea too

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/07/2013 19:04

We have the police helicopter (I think) above ours all the time, drives me bloody mad sometimes and there never seems to be a reason for it.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/07/2013 19:06

We get Chinooks over us all the time, we aren't far from a base and they practise night flying from there.

They don't bother us really, and the boys like to see them going over.

YoniRanger · 09/07/2013 19:08

The bloody planes and helicopters over here are terrible at the moment. I've seen 3 toddlers fall over with shock and god knows how you get by with a newborn.

Still I suppose they have to do it somewhere!

agedknees · 09/07/2013 19:14

YABU. I hope you never need the expertise of search and rescue in the mountains of Scotland whilst a blizzard is blowing. How do you think pilots get their expertise? By learning on a computer?

Plomino · 09/07/2013 19:15

We live very close to RAF Marham , which is a Tornado base , but also where they're testing the Typhoons , and also have the American bases at Mildenhall and Lakenheath , so it can be very busy in the sky above us . Particularly as we're on a straight line with their runway , so they come straight down our land and over the house at not much higher than 500 feet . But I love watching them particularly when they dog fight above us ,albeit noisily .

Schmo saw, if you're in London , the met helicopter has a twitter feed which tells you what they're doing - MPSinthesky . As in fact do most forces these days if you really want to know what they're up to.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/07/2013 19:18

Plomino Glasgow unfortunately! That sounds quite good as well, I would know when to buy earplugs avoid putting the kids down for naps if they did that here.

MmeLindor · 09/07/2013 19:19

YANBU to be annoyed at the noise and disturbance, but presumably the base was there before you were, so you can't complain about it really.

If you move to an area near an airbase, you have to accept a bit of noise, I am afraid.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/07/2013 19:19

Aged Should they not be practicing for that over mountains then? I can't see how flying low over houses is going to help much.

riojabotherer · 09/07/2013 19:20

All reason aside, because I get that they have to do it, hearing helicopters thundering over your house at midnight and later really is a bloody pain. I think I might live near you, OP!

You'd think night exercises could be wrapped up a bit earlier. Our toddler has grown up with it, so he never wakes. The cats, on the other hand...

thebody · 09/07/2013 19:21

Bit like moving near a church and complaining about the Sunday Bells or a school and the parking.

We are a small country but quite see how it's annoying op.

YoniMatopoeia · 09/07/2013 19:26

I live on a helecopter base.

Doesn't bother me apart from I can't hear people on my mobile phone when they are particularly close (no mobile signal in house!).

JADS · 09/07/2013 19:26

Op you aren't in Cardiff are you?

The RAF Northolt flight path is so much better than LHR. There are an increasing number of private jets using it though. Amazing fly pasts on Jubliee day etc.

Mind you, you want to be careful with regards to the HS 2 route.

SarahAndFuck · 09/07/2013 19:33

YABU. I miss them, we live nowhere near the airbase now but when we did I loved the noise, even at midnight. Never got tired of them in six years. I'm jealous. Envy

LynetteScavo · 09/07/2013 19:35

We get the police helicopter too. It doesn't bother me though (constant humming is nothing like the fast and low RAF helicopters).

I do wonder why the police helicopter only comes out in summer though. Is it because criminals stay at home when it's cold?

jojane · 09/07/2013 19:40

We. Back onto a training base so get jets, helicopters and bombing. Doesn't bother me too much. Best bit was when they were filming captain America, kept trying to get a glimpse of whathisface that plays captain America but no luck. Dh was gutted he didn't sign up to be an extra as they were looking for locals and he could have been in a superhero film!
