I really don't get it. I watched 2 episodes from the previous series and I watched the opener last week. There were a couple of really well-done creepy moments (the guy sliding out from under the bed sent shivers up my spine!) but apart from that, I didn't give a flying fig about any of it.

The script is really cringey in parts. Idris Elba (who was really quite good in The Wire) seems to be phoning this one in. OK he's rather nice to look at but that's not enough. His character is totally unlikeable. The plots are unbelievable. I just think it's dross and can't understand all the fuss.

I'm willing to have my mind changed so let's hear the case for the defence! Or is anyone else baffled at its success like I am? Confused

YABVVVVVVU. I love it. What is unreasonable is that there are only four episodes per series.

Drunkendiva1 · 09/07/2013 13:10

YABVU, it's brilliant.

cuteboots · 09/07/2013 13:18

YABVU I love it . It scared the pants of me when he slid out from under the bed. I had to leave the hall light on !

Sazzle41 · 09/07/2013 13:18

Yes its hogwash but Idris Elba just oozes charisma and lifts the whole thing IMO: Less of the 'suits' trying to get him for being not always into the rules and more gore and moody scenes of him plse tho ...Note to scriptwriters - check out Messiah w. Mr Stott....

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 09/07/2013 13:18

Totally unreasonable attitude.

I heard a wild rumour Idris would like to make a Luther film, please please please let this happen

FreudiansSlipper · 09/07/2013 13:19

YABVU last weeks made me jump twice it was excellent

I do agree in a way his acting was more believable in The Wire but then that is down to the fantastic script writing and that he was so good he is Stringer Bell pretending to be an English detective

cocolepew · 09/07/2013 13:21

It's totally daft, walking out if a burning building in slow motion, hanging bad 'uns over balconeys but it's not a documentary. It's great entertainment though, and scared the crap out of me last week.

And Idris is seriously hot.

thismousebites · 09/07/2013 13:27

Oooh yes, Messiah.....now THAT was creepy,Ken Stott was bloody brilliant.
Agree that Luther should move closer to that.

Sazzle41 · 09/07/2013 13:31

thismousebites thankyou - I can watch anything like that back to back and all day long ... then read a serial killer whodunnit to wind down/go to sleep with ! Mr Stott all rumpled and world weary and craggy ... (goes all un-necessary)

mrslyman · 09/07/2013 13:34

Imagines what I'd do to Idris Elba under a pile of old horseblankets Blush

Sazzle41 · 09/07/2013 13:38

Also Luther scriptwriters can Luther have someone madly twisted to 'duel' with and try to outwit again now that the brilliantly bonkers & mad murderess whatsherface has done a bunk ? Wotshisname out of retirement to get him bcos he bends the rules isn't really doing it for me ... should've made it a woman and put in some serious sexual chemistry if you really had to go that route ... And feel free to ramp up the bonkersness & gorefest too while you're at it ..

ShatnersBassoon · 09/07/2013 13:43

YANBU. I watched the first couple of the first series and really couldn't be bothered with any more of it. Idris Elba was so believable as Stringer Bell, but as Luther I find him completely unconvincing.

I hate anything that stylised and 'cool'.

Drunkendiva1 · 09/07/2013 13:52

sazzle reckon she (was she called Alice?) may make an appearance in this series-especially now Luther has a girlfriend.

dexter73 · 09/07/2013 13:54

YANBU - it's so ridiculous and a right load of old cobblers.

EldritchCleavage · 09/07/2013 13:57

It's tosh. But it is pretty, highly entertaining tosh.

I wouldn't say Idris Elba is 'phoning it in'. I like that there is a British drama someone's spent money on, with good male and female black characters (vanishingly rare) and a real sense of location.

What, you want verisimilitude as well?

Some people are soooo demanding.

ubik · 09/07/2013 14:01

I don't like the focus on violence against women - the BBC seems to love that theme.
I watched the first series and the psychopath in it scared me stupid.

Am sticking to The West Wing and Mad men

Sazzle41 · 09/07/2013 14:01

Really drunkendiva1 - cant wait. And dexter73, yes its ridiculous, but I dont really want emotionally gruelling i am a hoarder/i have 10 stone testicles/i will only live to 28 and be 12 inches tall stuff day in day out .. Reality sucks, give me tortured, artistically backlit Idris outwitting a bonkers serial killer plse ... nightly preferably..and the US can borrow him for the 'acclaimed' stuff (lets face it UK hasnt got much apart from stage work that he could shine in)

bunnymother · 09/07/2013 14:05

Idris is hot hot hot. I might have to hide this thread - much more talk of him will be bad for me health.

"Imagines what I'd do to Idris Elba under a pile of old horseblankets" - am giggling like the school girl I once was about a hundred years ago

bunnymother · 09/07/2013 14:05

Or bad for my health, even

MrsBertMacklin · 09/07/2013 14:25

YANBU and agree completely. This and another forum made me watch out of curiosity and it left me completely Confused about the adulation.

Idris Elba is hammier than a hamster, I can't see what raises it above the countless other 'cop with a dark side' shows that have been made. The only bright spot was seeing Warren Brown in it, who can act and was fantastic in 'Good Cop' but his entanglement with the internal affairs team was ruined by a shitty script and overacting from the investigating officer.

I gather there was a storyline in a previous series ref. Luther romancing a serial killer which was amazing and knicker-droppingly sexy Hmm.

Darkesteyes · 09/07/2013 14:42

I watched Luther for the first time last week. I dont get the hype either though Idris is nice.
YY Messiah I have the original first Messiah on DVD. The first one was based on a novel by Boris Starling.
In fact Boris did a cameo apperance in it. He played the dead body they find sitting on the sofa with the skin hanging off his hands.
Cant believe its been 12 years since it was first broadcast on BBC1 Where has the bloody time gone?

EldritchCleavage · 09/07/2013 14:44

It is over-hyped, there's no doubt about it.

It will also date horribly. I can't wait to watch it again with the DC in about 15 years time and cackle all the way through at the 2013 crapness of it.

Darkesteyes · 09/07/2013 14:44

I used to love Waking the Dead too. Sue Johnston was brilliant in that as Grace Foley.
