To hate 'filler' middle names

VAVAV00M · 09/07/2013 06:02

Middle names like Ann, Marie, May, Rose, Grace, Jane

FFS just don't put one down if you aren't going to be a bit creative!

Disclaimer: slightly light hearted and possibly bias as my favourite names are Rose, May and Grace so I feel the beauty is being taken away...

My DM's middle name is one of your list, Marie. This wasn't chosen as filler but rather to make sure my DM didn't get turned away when she meets St Peter at the pearly hates. My granny was a very holy wee lady! Grin

Pearly gates, sorry.

ScooseIsLoose · 09/07/2013 18:49

My dd has grace as a middle name. I chose the name because I really liked it not because it's a 'filler' name. So Biscuit to you op!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/07/2013 19:02

We definitely wanted conventional names for our DCs, maybe not the "5 in a class" level of popular, but not the sort that attract frequent comments or spelling confusion. Not lacking in imagination, just our preference.

Ann, Rose, May, Grace etc sound nice in between practically any combination of firstname/surname, I suspect that is one reason they are so popular, as well as being lovely names.

Lilithmoon · 09/07/2013 19:07

FFS right back at you...YABU and super judgey. My DD has one of your filler names with an extra A and it was chosen in memory of her wonderful great grandmother.

KirjavaTheCat · 09/07/2013 19:07

Yanbu. We didn't have any good reason to give DS a middle name, no special family members to name after, no second name that was almost his first name we loved it so much, no family names woven through our family trees. So we didn't give him one. People look so surprised when we tell them he has no middle initial Confused

WhatNow2013 · 09/07/2013 19:11

Claire, Jane and Louise... that's three of the four names between me and my DSis then Grin

Nah I love my name. Doesn't even bother me that it's a bit 'usual' tbh.

lottieandmia · 09/07/2013 19:19

One of my dds has the middle name Clare - which I used because of best friend connection - who I admire very much.

So you see, you cannot know whether a name is a 'filler' anyway - bow could you possibly?

SarahAndFuck · 09/07/2013 19:25

I'm not planning to have any more children, but I do sometimes like to muse on the names I might give them if I were.

Clare is on my list as a middle name, in honour of my SIL and because I love Debussy piece (different spelling but even so). It wouldn't be a filler name, it would be a name that had meaning to us.

Lj8893 · 09/07/2013 19:40

YABU.

My middle name is rose as both my parents really loved it as a name but loved my first name more.

My little girls middle name will also be rose after me and for the same reason my parents gave me mine.

InViennaWeWerePoetry · 09/07/2013 20:13

I have a double barreled first name, of which the second part is a 'filler' middle name. It wasn't intentional, my grandma wanted my mum to name me after her favourite television character Grin, and my mum agreed but tagged the name she originally chose on the end of it. Probably worked in my favour really, there were 6 with the 'filler' name as their first name in my year at secondary, plus it seems to be everyone my generation's middle name.

whatshallwedo · 09/07/2013 20:19

Yabu we chose one of those names for our dd because it is my mum's middle name and it was also my nan's so it was a nice way of incorporating them both.

If we'd had a ds we would have used my grandad's middle name and dp's dad's first name.

spanky2 · 09/07/2013 20:20

How I met your mother . The middle name of marshal and lily's baby ... 'wait for it'! Grin

HelgaHufflepuff · 09/07/2013 20:26

I don't have a dd, but love all those names you mentioned. I'd far rather have a timeless, classic and pretty name like Rose or Grace than lumbering a poor kid with a so called 'creative' made up name!

Shoeoholic · 09/07/2013 20:30

It is a massive presumption to suggest that these names are just filler names and haven't been given much thought!

My DD's middle name is Mae, after my Great Grandma and also the month she was born. My G.Grandma was a very strong and courageous lady, who had to bring up four children by herself after her husband was killed in action in the second WW. If my daughter inherits even an ounce of her determination it will stand her in good stead for life!

CatsRule · 09/07/2013 21:09

How would you possibly know what is a filler name and what isn't.

Someone might think my ds's middle name is a fillet name but is actually after my dead father whom I was very close to and miss dearly. My dh wanted it to be his first name but I personally wanted ds to have his own unique (not that unique...just in our family) and have a middle name with a special meaning to it.

Each to their own but I don't suppose unleas you know the people involved that you will know their story re naming their baby.
