To hate 'filler' middle names

VAVAV00M · 09/07/2013 06:02

Middle names like Ann, Marie, May, Rose, Grace, Jane

FFS just don't put one down if you aren't going to be a bit creative!

Disclaimer: slightly light hearted and possibly bias as my favourite names are Rose, May and Grace so I feel the beauty is being taken away...

My DD2 has Grace as a middle name. It's beautiful and she loves it, and it's the name of a now departed Great Aunt whom I was close to as a child. It was no way a filler. It was carefully thought out and it goes beautifully with her first name.
DD1 has a much quirkier and unusual middle name whivh, 17 years on, I don't like so much as I did -I wonder what I was thinking! DD2 is 13 and I still love Grace as does she, so I think these "filler" names will probably stand the test of time better than others.

Ghostsgowoooh · 09/07/2013 09:14

Yabvu indeed!
All four dc have middle names that were chosen because they either honoured relatives or friends and I used the name Mae with dd2 because my great aunt was a Mae and she was born in may.

You would have kittens over all their middle names. They all have two!

KellyElly · 09/07/2013 09:15

Eh?

RussiansOnTheSpree · 09/07/2013 09:16

Both my DD's have middle names which are on your list. One was my mum's name. One was her mum's name. So, YABVU and you can bog off.

GobbySadcase · 09/07/2013 09:16

DD is Jane after my mum...

theodorakisses · 09/07/2013 09:24

AIBU to to really hate user names in capitals?

Disclaimer: Some of my favourite posters are capitalists.

Well, this thread has gone well. Grin

Lots of people choose Rose, Grace and May for personal reasons, and that's as it should be.

But. There is no denying that these three names are having a massive spike in popularity for this generation, and I do believe that many people use them as fillers. It does become a bit repetitive.

It always makes me laugh when people start middle name threads in Baby Names, looking for suggestions and people come on to suggest Rose, Grace and May. Grin I mean, you'd had to have been living in Jupiter for the last decade to need these names actually pointed out to you as suggestions

To me, middle names are for honouring family members, remembering someone or something, or being a bit out there in a way you wouldn't for a first name.

Interestingly, there don't seem to be any default/filler middle names for boys...

lurcherlover · 09/07/2013 09:27

I know what you mean, as I have a filler middle name -ole every other girl born circa 1975-1982, it's Louise. I write it on forms, but I've never really identified with it or seen it as being particularly special. My mum regretted it afterwards and wished she'd used a family name for my middle name. When we had dcs, DH and I used family names for middle names, which I much prefer.

Your problem op is that most of your names on that list will be the names of older relatives, and therefore not filler names at all!

lurcherlover · 09/07/2013 09:27

-ole? Like!

hedgehogpickle · 09/07/2013 09:29

Yes, that's exactly why we chose DD's "uncreative" middle name - because we're lazy & unimaginative so just thought we'd copy everyone else o_O

It had nothing at all to do with liking the name, or it going with her first name well, or just not giving a shit if it's popular.

YABU and quite offensive actually even if it was supposed to be "lighthearted".

JedwardScissorhands · 09/07/2013 09:31

Who cares? Middle names are just extra ink to waste on official forms. Nobody actually uses them day to day.

Cravingdairy · 09/07/2013 09:41

Ann was my gran's name. She died when I was little and it's nice to share something with her. OK with you?

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 09/07/2013 09:48

My middle name is Jane, it's a filler, I really like it as it adds to my full name.

Get over it :)

LadyBryan · 09/07/2013 09:51

So you're pissed off because you like the names and don't want people using them? Wow!

My daughter has the middle name Anne. Because both our mothers are called Anne. Does that pass your test?

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 09/07/2013 09:59

YABVU. My DD's middle name is one of those. She is named after my gran. My neice shares the same middle name.

ShadowStorm · 09/07/2013 10:58

YABU.

Many people who use these middle names will have chosen them for personal reasons, such as after relatives. Or because they think that they work well with the chosen first name. Or just because they really like the name.

And why should parents feel obliged to choose a creative middle name, anyway?

gordyslovesheep · 09/07/2013 11:10

Mine have the following middle names: Hannah, Edith and lily ...all named after much loved family members ...yabu and goady

NarkyNamechanger · 09/07/2013 11:15

I see the OP just came to bitch and run.

OTheHugeManatee · 09/07/2013 11:19

One of my middle names is on your 'filler' list. How rude Hmm

And this business of being 'creative' with children's names is daft. Your children aren't an extension of your own ego and shouldn't be used for the purposes of your own self-expression. Give them nice solid reliable attractive names, with conventional spellings, and leave them to fill the name with their own personalities.

YABU!

mynameisslimshady · 09/07/2013 11:28

AIBU to think you should keep your ill thought out and ridiculous opinions to yourself in future?

HeffalumpTheFlump · 09/07/2013 11:29

As my own middle name is on that list I'm going to say YABU. In my case it was a family name.

ConcreteElephant · 09/07/2013 11:30

DD's middle name is Ann, named for DH's DM, who died too young from cancer and never got to meet any of her grandchildren. I was delighted to give her name to DD.

I think it's probably true to say that some people, feeling like their DC should have middle names, pick anything rather than nothing, but YABVVU to suggest that particular names are fillers. And hate's a strong word.

FWIW, I don't have a middle name (thank goodness as my first name gives away my mid 70s birthday quite nicely on its own!) and DS doesn't have one either as we couldn't think of two meaningful names.

MummyPig24 · 09/07/2013 12:05

My daughters middle name is Anne, as is mine, because it was my mums name. It means something to us. My son has his two grandfathers names as middle names. It means something to us. How do you know that rose, grace, may don't mean something to those families?

mrsjay · 09/07/2013 12:09

I dont think they are filler names that is daft people just think they are nice names or have meaning the trend atm for some is MAE or RAE they come and go years ago it was emma janes and Louise's

broccolirocks · 09/07/2013 12:17

My son has a 'creative' middle name which he's a bit Blush about, my daughter has a filler which she loves and uses all the time. Both are from great-grandparents.
