To think that the British just don't know how to dress for summer?

MarmaladeTwatkins · 08/07/2013 13:11

Me included.

During the heat wave, I don't think I've seen a single person dressed nicely/appropriately. Same when I've been abroad. I fully accept that it might just be where I live/go on holiday, btw.

I just don't think that the British can do summer clothes very well. Maybe because we don't get that much of it? And what is this thing for men wandering around public areas without a top on? When did that become acceptable?! Confused You don't see the men of Greece or Italy wandering around the streets without a top. It makes for grim viewing.

Am I being a miserable twat?

"Actually, I tell a lie, I saw a rather buff and toned black guy (so most definitely not lobster red) sauntering down the road when I was driving to pick up DS from school. I wasn't complaining about seeing him. I looked out for him on the way back too"

Envy

Come on down to the sunny Black Country. You can move for sweaty, hairy men with taps aff. THIS EVERYWHERE

My ex picked the dc up on Sunday with no top on Envy

FreudiansSlipper · 10/07/2013 11:57

MarmaladeTwatkins · 10/07/2013 11:58

Pasty white, flabby (he used to have a 6pack), too tight shorts, just ewwww!

MarmaladeTwatkins · 10/07/2013 12:03

When I went to Spain a few years back I found out that the Spanish have a word for the type of Brits you see going into restaurants without tops. Can't bloody remember it but it made me howl.

I will wear a t-shirt maxi occasionally but I will buy it a size too big to avoid the visible bulges

That is not a size too big, btw, that is the correct size. Wink

I am skinny, and I don't buy overtight clothes because they will show my bulges, as well as create some.

It makes me sad when I see women squeezed into very tight clothes that only show off their bulging fat.
They would look so much better in slightly less tight clothes.

LOL, you cheeky swine!

I just mean, I would buy a 14 in all other things, generally. But a 14 in a maxi dress fits but doesn't mean it looks good. Sometimes it is wise to go up a size.

Gok Wan is to blame. He advocates wearing tighter clothes abd showing your curves. Often interpreted as squeeze into the smallest size you can. I have very tight dresses, I wear support underwear with to smooth out the bumps. In hot weather I wear looser dresses so the bumps are hidden.

However, I think where I live everyone looks lovely. I know if I head into my local town though I'll see some sights! But whatever makes you happy.

I'm wearing denim knee length shorts and a loose vest btw. Scruffy but I'm cleaning so appropriate imo.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 10/07/2013 12:27

Gok Wan last night. Did anyone see it?!

He plucked some unsuspecting woman from the audience and proceeded to give her a holiday makeover. Assuming she was going somewhere hot, I doubt very much that she would have felt comfy in ten items of support underwear/4 inch heels, Gok. You idiot.

The most terrify sight this morning was a group of mums on their way home from dropping kids off at the local school this morning, all in too tight vest tops with no bra underneath and because the tops were too tight they had stretched past their limit and ere totally see though, I was being stared at my 8 nipples! From behind it was just as bad with leggings too tight so the seams were see through, needless to say none of them were wearing bum covering knickers! The last thing I needed to see whilst eating my toast whilst driving to work!

I am wearing a pair of cropped jeans and a light cotton shirt that covers my belly and bingo wings. :)

MarmaladeTwatkins · 10/07/2013 12:36

LOL at 8 nipple face-off Grin

Due to having been rather ill the past few days I have been wearing short shorts and a vest top (with bra). Having said that, the only people who've seen me have been next door when they came round to get the football they'd kicked over. Grin
Had I been at work, I have 3 pairs of linen trousers (black, navy and white) and 2 pairs cropped trousers (one white, one denim) and an assortment of brightly coloured tops (form orange through turquoise to pink!) which I wear all year anyway by layering (so all summer tops but worn with cardis and trousers in winter). I look gorgeous!! (If I may say so myself) Grin

spacegoat · 10/07/2013 12:58

Actually we brits do love getting dressed for dinner when on holiday. Where ever you are you can always spot us, freshly showered, in our niceset, newest, summer clothes sunburnt

Its a bit Downton Abbey really.

*Other nationalities are freshly showered and look lovely too!

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/07/2013 13:03

I've just come back from Crete and yes there were a few British Hmm moments but mostly they looked fine.
Don't ask me about last year in Sharm where the majority were Russians though.
Now that is a nation that does not know how to dress in the summer or probably any other time of the year.

I don't hate Russians, honest.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/07/2013 13:10

I think Londoners are actually pretty good at dressing for the hot weather

I agree with this. Maybe it's because the tube is so hot year round and we have to learn to layer? Round Soho Square most people (M/F) are pretty stylishly or at least inoffensively dressed and I haven't spotted any sunburn as yet.

In the hot weather I have mostly been wearing:
Maxi dresses & gladiators
Knee length tea-style dresses with cotton cardi & wedges
Cigarette pants / cropped pants with blouse & stilettos
Tube skirts & t-shirts

I did see a girl in black opaques and a jumper on Sunday though.

Getting dressed for dinner on holiday is one of life's greatest pleasures. Especially if you are dining in the hotel or getting a taxi and don't have to worry about practical footwear.

Oobis · 10/07/2013 13:14

I've never understood why it's the ugly ones who disrobe first....?

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/07/2013 13:21

I do love getting dressed up for dinner when I''m on holiday abroad.
I spend the day in a bikini at the beach or the pool and then come back, have a shower and change into a summer dress which always seems to look better in foreign climes than here.
I always go for a midi length, I like Joe Browns for purty summer dresses.

mateysmum · 10/07/2013 15:12

I'm in Milan at the moment and it's just as hot as the uk, but the locals look so cool snd stylish. No muffin tops or tattoos and handsome chaps.in sharp suits. So I had no choice but to spend a load of money on clothes so that my British dress sense didn't let me down Grin
After all the Italian economy needs the help.

limitedperiodonly · 10/07/2013 15:18

Can I just say flip-flops and dirty pavements?

burberryqueen · 10/07/2013 15:23

probably a heroin addict, you can spot them in the heat, the ones wearing jumpers and overcoats.

bettycocker · 10/07/2013 15:35

I just had to pop into town and couldn't help wondering whether other MNers were out and about checking out people's summer attire. Grin

There were a few people with backless dresses with their bras showing. Doesn't wearing a bra with a backless dress defeat the object of wearing a backless dress?

There aws a very athletic and handsome young man with his top off. I had a bit of a Mr Darcy moment. Blush
