To feel sad to see 5 year old girl in hijab

Probably will get flamed for this & iabu as its not my business.
I am not racist in any way. I am Asian myself and have many Muslim friends.

Growing up, I never saw any muslim girls with hijabs. This is a trend which has been growing since the late 90s.

I know that the meaning behind the hijab is to protect modesty and show committment to Islam. It is supposed to be the girls/womans decision after much thought and dedication.

At 5 years old they are still getting changed in the classroom for PE and she won't be able to do this now with boys around. How will she play and do PE freely? She has been singled out by the views of her parents.
Also, she will barely know what religion means, so she has not made an informed decision for herself.

Normally she is chasing about with my DS and other kids before school.Today she was just stood there, perhaps embarrassed or told not to?
I felt very sad

crescentmoon - why have you not answered my questions?:

was there something especially merciful in not holding the muslim community to account for the actions of lunatic individuals?

I think the above is what confuses many people. Someone in the community/mosque MUST know that these radicals are operating - so why don't they stop them? It's all very well spouting "Not in my name" on placards - why don't moderate muslims en masse DO something about them?

Crumbledwalnuts · 03/07/2013 20:20

By the way, thanks Body. I feel quite strongly about this, as you can probably tell, and don't like being accused of prejudice. "Our" Muslim community where I live is very friendly and out-reachy and I do feel rather resentful of this accusation, I must admit.

I am a white middle aged woman and still the last time i flew i was asked to remove my shoes and belt, patted down and subject to bag searches. My husband a white middle aged man had his hand luggage swabbed for whatever they test for and my 2 teen sons had to remove their trainers, belts and had their gadgets separately scanned.

It is part and parcel of flying today.

Crumbledwalnuts · 03/07/2013 20:26

Sadly, part and parcel of flying - why?

So you feel sorry for a little girl in a hijab? Do you feel the same way about little girls in pagents? Or is this considered more normal?

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2013 20:38

steth

Don't know about anybody else but I definitely feel sorry for little girls in pageants because it's vile.

I'm always a bit surprised when I do occasionally see a very young girl in an hijab because I thought it was do with the onset of puberty.

I do steth if that helps. Revolting.

Crescentmoon: you must be joking. I don't blame all Muslims (obviously) for what is done in the name of Islam but I certainly expect it to be condemned by those within the community. If the response is just, meh, it wasn't me, then frankly that's not right.

Yes there is such a duty, just as everyone in the Catholic community should be alert for child abuse after what has happened. Of course! Particularly since radicalisation does happen in mosques and madrassas, as well as on the internet and in Afpak training camps. And the oppression of women, with covering being a part and parcel of that oppression, must be conceded (in my opinion) or it's a point that people will make over and over again.

cantspel · 03/07/2013 20:43

steth if you hang around on mn for any length of time you would already know that the majority of posters do not support pageants.

LastTangoInDevonshire · 03/07/2013 20:50

crumbled - well said. It absolutely cannot be said that these people who commit atrocities are 'lone wolves' and are not known.

Crescentmoon: I'm afraid then that you probably have to accept that you are arguing with people who aren't on this thread. Unless you would like to say who you accuse of being Islamophobic on this thread?

That means that you really haven't been addressing our points at all, but arguing against strawman figures of racists and Islamophobes. They exist, to be sure, but apart from that mad person in the middle, who was deleted, are they here?

Crumbledwalnuts · 03/07/2013 21:00

Thanks Tango.

Just a question: do you, crumbled and tango associate muslims with terrorism?

Crumbledwalnuts · 03/07/2013 21:11

You mean, like the people who claim to be Muslim who threaten and plan terrorist attacks associate Muslims with terrorism? I suppose I take the lead from that. It's got no basis in Islam, I'm told, and I am more than ready to believe that, knowing the Muslims that I do know. But people who claim to be Muslim make the association. Don't you accept that?

Crumbledwalnuts · 03/07/2013 21:12

"What institution here or abroad supports them?"

Astounding denial.

BlueOrange · 03/07/2013 21:15

No mrs devere, not talking about you. I can see you have a good level of awareness of minority groups. Was referring to crumbled and tango.

cantspel · 03/07/2013 21:18

I will be honest and say i associate islam with terrorism but not the terrorism against the west that you probably mean.
I think of the 2000 years of shia v sunni bloodshed and the terrorism inflicted against one muslim to another and think muslims of any branch of islam should expel more of their energy sorting themselves out if they want others to be more accepting of their religion. Islam declares itself as a religion of peace but i see very little peace within the muslim world. And that needs to change.
