MIL (when at the beach today with DH, me and the kids) and it was sunny (ish) wanted to tan her legs so took off her jeans - leaving her only in a short vest top and pants . The sun went in and came out a few times. Her jeans did the same - skinny jeans so NOT easy to put on and off discretely or quickly.

Beach was rather full.

She did have a skirt on before going to the beach but changed into jeans for the walk down

She also used to take off her top and sunbathe in MY garden in her bra that is when she came here and it was sunny which was rarely.

My garden is shared.

I cringe.

AIBU to wish she did not do this?

Mind you she is the woman who asked me if I was smiling because I 'got it last night' i still cant believe she said that i was smiling at my lovely children thank you very much and you should be so rude about your son to me either

I said nothing BTW.

umm well I think she is entitled to do that on a beach if she wants to.

its the in and out of the jeans that gets me lol. Duplicate times. And in the middle of a busy beach. Just felt odd.

You know how hard skinny jeans are to put on and off at the best of times

They were very sparse ubber small pants (nothing like beach wear). She is NOT an old fashioned granny.

She is entitled to do as she wishes though, that is true and remained uncontested lol though i did look away and did not encourage her in out in out shake it all about

I don't get the issue TBH. It's a beach.

I wouldn't do it in the park but surely undies/swimsuits cover the same area and are normal beach wear?

I can't imagine anyone else gave a second look to the woman wearing a vest and pants on the beach.

Now if she'd been full-frontal nude you might have a point!

Apart from asking if you were smiling because you 'got it last night', I can't for the life of me fathom what your problem is here?

Not dyslexic (at least not that I know of), but perhaps done too many of those 'spot-the-word-in-the-grid' puzzles!

I should have posted something relevant to your OP though, so my two cents is that I can understand your discomfort (especially if you're not from a family who regularly strips off - I'm not myself).

However, if it were me, I'd admire her self-confidence, and would probably be wishing I were more like her, rather than wanting her to cover.

She does sound like a bit of an exhibitionist. Why didn't she just put her skirt back on or did she not have it with her? I suppose it is more annoying than anything, having to stop and start while she takes her pants on and off. I am with you on the sunbathing in the bra thing only cos it's a shared garden and other might feel uncomfortable. Saying that would people bat an eye lid if she was in a bikini?

The bra thing seems tacky to me. I often sunbathe topless but wouldn't do so in a bra.

My neighbours all used to sunbathe in their bra. Everyone used to pull their chair out to the front step and sit out in their knickers and bra. Women used to sit out on their flat balconys and sunbathe. I wouldn't think it was odd on a beach.

If she were in the middle of St Pancras railway station and had whipped her jeans off, then fair enough. But on a beach?

Assuming she is otherwise a nice mil, i think yabu. Maybe a bit of an extrovert, but that's not a crime, is it ? She sounds quite funny to me !

Sorry but this is a little prudish. It's a beach would you have said the same if she'd been wearing a bikini top and bottom which were past their best??

I've swam in the sea in bra and knickers.

Remember going skiing once and there was several women there who were sunbathing in the snow with only there bras on top. Didn't bat an eyelid

Mil is always elegantly dressesd but sometimes sunbathes in her bra in our garden. I find it funny and a little bit sweet because it is done without any self consciousness. But I would feel uncomfortable if I sensed that she did it to show off or to provoke. Sitting at the beach in yur underwear is a bit .
