Especially their sandwich selection. Surprisingly uninspiring and overpriced IMO.

First world problem much?

Hiphopopotamus · 29/06/2013 23:25

Oh for goodness sake - everything in these bloody boards is a first world problem! That phrase us do irritating!

Unless you are about to start a thread talking about whether you are unreasonable to be thinking of stealing a loaf of bread while your family is starving, please shut the fuck up, and let people talk about the day to day things!!

Hiphopopotamus · 29/06/2013 23:26

Obviously us do = is so

Rage posting haha

bimbabirba · 29/06/2013 23:30

Totally agree. You can't moan about anything anymore on MN without some kill joy mentioning "first world problem"
Wtf?

I love JL. Love it.

Except any of their cafes.

The coffee is crap. The hot savoury food is crap. Their cold savoury food is crap.

The cakes etc are okay.

YADNBU

GiveItYourBestShot · 30/06/2013 00:27

I bought a vanilla slice and the assistant put it on a plate straight out of the diswasher. It was not improved by the experience. She did not understand why I wanted a cold plate. Small but crushing disappointment.

emilialuxembourg · 30/06/2013 00:33

I agree,dry lumpen and dull.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 30/06/2013 01:24

The scones in the espresso bars are dry and crumbly and 'orrible but the ones in the restaurant are ok. The coffee comes in too small a cup and the food is all overpriced and really not very nice.

So disappointing Sad

NoSnowJustSand · 30/06/2013 07:40

I would kill for a prawn sandwich and a pot of tea from JL right now.

dexter73 · 30/06/2013 09:54

YANBU they are surprisingly disappointing.
What's wrong with First World problems

delasi · 30/06/2013 11:37

All terrible Confused I find the same at M&S... in both cases, they would be vastly improved by simply selling the same as what can be found in their associated food stores...

However it is a remarkably quiet and peaceful place to relax, esp. with a baby, in our local shopping centre. So we buy a cold drink and eat elsewhere Smile

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 30/06/2013 11:42

M&S do serve the stuff from their foodhall, the ones I've been to anyway. But the choice isn't very good. Better than BHS though. Never again

MorrisZapp · 30/06/2013 11:46

Omg yes, they are beyond shit. I went once when on maternity leave and very bored. Good thing I didn't have anything else on that day as I had to queue three times - once for food, once for drinks, once to pay. All appallingly inefficient, it was all cold by the time I sat down.

Never again, no way. Ruinously expensive too.

Mondayschild78 · 30/06/2013 14:10

Agree the food is always disappointing at JL. Shame as its such a fab shop otherwise.

bimbabirba · 30/06/2013 16:36

M&S café food is alright by comparison with JL.
I queued 35 minutes yesterday for a spicy parsnip

bimbabirba · 30/06/2013 16:38

Spicy parsnip soup that tasted worse than hospital soup Hmm

So bad - I just have a cheese scone now. That's my advice to you - don't stray beyond a cheese scone.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 30/06/2013 16:42

Thought it was just me! Went in there the other week for somewhere different. Had a cheese scone (tiny, dry, not enough butter) and The World's Smallest Vanilla Latte TM. It came to well over what I'd pay at Costa/Starbucks/Cafe Nero and I got so little for my money. Vair disappointed.

But I've now discovered the new Gregg's Moment cafe that opened last week - most fabulous place on earth. And some seriously hot guys on the counter too - bonus!

PurplePidjin · 30/06/2013 16:44

So, people in third world countries aren't allowed to be pissed off at crap service, over priced drinks and shoddy products? Discrimination much?! Hmm

Yanbu, I'm always disappointed by JL cafe/restaurant/thing. I don't want noodles for £8, i want a naice cheese toastie!

Wishfulmakeupping · 30/06/2013 16:51

I love the coffee but it is the smallest heartbrokenthey're cupcakes are bloody fantastical fact

ukatlast · 30/06/2013 19:07

Coffee is crap and there is not a single gluten free item for my OH...so yes YANBU...it is crap. JL really could do much better but then Waitrose is overrated IMHO too.

littlepeas · 30/06/2013 19:09

The food in JL cafe looks amazing, but tastes of nothing. I love JL but never use their cafe. YANBU!

Daffodilly · 30/06/2013 19:29

Agreed. YANBU.

Rubbish coffee. Tiny cups. Half size of most places and still £2.50. Food poor.

Service at our local one also leave a lot to be desired. I also avoid now which is a shame as I love a good JL shopping day.

delasi · 30/06/2013 23:29

But have you had the M&S cakes? They're dry and grainy and yuck Sad Whereas the cakes sold in store are usually fine and look different from the ones in the cafe. Ditto JL - the Waitrose cakes are much better than some of the dry gross slabs they sell.

The ones here of both also never sell the regular sandwiches, just overpriced baguette/panini things that are equally bleh.

However no cold food here - our JL gives you a number on a stick thing to bring food to your table when it's ready. So your expensive rubbish comes nice and hot Smile

ZadokTheBeast · 30/06/2013 23:37

Dried-up looking sandwiches, horrible presentation. Hot food stodgy, unimaginative, sloppy. Serving/queuing system stupid, inefficient and nearly impossible with pushchair and tray. I'm growing to dislike it more and more but do love JL. I just wish they would do something about their crap cafes/restaurants.
I'm referring to Edinburgh. Are they all rubbish?
