To be annoyed with this dog poo lady

Saw a woman with a huge dog today, without warning dog stopped and did a massive steaming turd on the pavement in busy village centre. She scooped it up with a bag and threw it away, but wasnt very thorough and left a thick skid mark that anyone could step in or wheel pushchair through...this always happens to me!)

I am not really sure what she should have done but I was still annoyed. Maybe she could have used another bag to try and scrape up the skid more thoroughly, or poured water on it, or not let her dog poo there (not a dog owner, not sure how you do this, I confess)

To add, at least poo washes away, unlike the above mentioned chewing gum and sweet wrappers etc.....

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2013 13:34

Chewing gum does not stink of shit.

Sweet wrappers do not stick to to your feet.

victoriousEaglet · 27/06/2013 13:36

Good to know other people hate this too. But what the frig is the solution?? If there are any inventors out there, this is an opportunity for you. I'm thinking of a spatula/scraper that attaches to a bag so you can scrape and bag in one flick of the wrist Grin. The other end of the spatula contains a pump activated disinfectant spray...

Chewing gum is horrendous if you step in it, rubbish thrown on the street is extremly anti`social and winds me up, the number of children I see disregarding their wrappers and parents pretending not to see is vast. And.... dont get me started on spitting.

OneStepCloser · 27/06/2013 13:38

That could take off victorious, you should patent it!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2013 13:40

Bring back dog licences in some form.

On the spot fines for people not clearing up properly.

Removal of dogs from persistent offenders.

The best way to remove dog shit is bag over hand for majority. Damp cloth wipe for the remnants (hard surface)/trowel under remnants (soft surface). How hard is that?

LineRunner · 27/06/2013 13:42

I don't like pavement skids marks, either.

Barbara Woodhouse always trained dog owners to make their dogs go in the gutter for this reason.

ZolaBuddleia · 27/06/2013 13:45

What about something along the lines of a Dishmatique/Minky dishwashing thing? Contains detergent, has a scrubber on the end. Job done!

Fenton · 27/06/2013 13:46

She did make a good attempt at clearing it up but it think if it was a substantial amount still there I would have tried with another bag.

New dog walking kit:-

Scrape and Bag gadget
Bucket of water and disinfectant
Bucket of sand to soak up stubborn spillages
"Caution - Slippery surface" fold-out signs

Scruffey · 27/06/2013 13:46

Even though she picked up, she left enough shit to cause a problem so Yanbu to be annoyed. I think the solution is that immediately as you see your dog getting in that crouching position to shove a paper plate or similar thing n the floor under its bum. Then you can pick the whole lot up with no smears left to ruin people's shoes, carpets and potentially cause blindness. I just honestly think people don't care about other people - I'd feel guilty leaving any shit on the pavement, it's shameful.

This is hilarious. Love the idea of following my dog with a sheet. He sort of circles and then walks as he is doing it !
Anyhow if he off lead I would have to be Usain Bolt to catch up
DNA dog poo Grin

HandMini · 27/06/2013 13:57

Soverylucky. That is really interesting. I would have thought the costs would be prohibitive, so heartening to see it is working / being trialled.

lydiajones · 27/06/2013 14:01

I always think a kind of spray should be invented for this to dry out and disinfect the remains!!!

HoneyDragon · 27/06/2013 14:20

There is a poo freezing spray.

ZolaBuddleia · 27/06/2013 14:23

Really, HoneyDragon?! Does it turn it into that Ice Magic stuff, like a solid Mr Whippy?

imnotmymum · 27/06/2013 14:26

Honey is there really poo freezing spray or are you winding me up...off to google

OneStepCloser · 27/06/2013 14:27

Yes, I tried it, didnt work for us.

imnotmymum · 27/06/2013 14:28

Yes on Amazon $11.99 wow just how much do I not know

Hercy · 27/06/2013 14:29

Some people really need to get a life. The very idea of bringing out disinfectant and some sort of scourer is laughable.

MrsBethel · 27/06/2013 14:42

Lot of poor arguments on this thread:

  • some other things are worse (eg gum), so just don't worry about it
  • I follow the poop-scoop rule to the letter, I don't care if that is insufficient (suggested career: traffic warden?)
  • you can't get rid of EVERY MOLECULE, so just don't worry about it
  • I can't be expected to carry around this, that and whatever, so therefore there is NOTHING I can reasonably do
  • I once saw a cat poo on the street, therefore I have carte blanche to do what I will with my dog

Deep down, you know these arguments are bollocks. They are simply convenient excuses to justify your behaviour.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 27/06/2013 14:48

Not as poor as moaning about disease from skids, then suggesting a TISSUE to clear it up. Grin

ChasingDogs · 27/06/2013 14:55

Most poo is firm and won't leave skids. It is impractical to carry around large quantities of water, disinfectant and metal scouring pads on the off chance of a skid mark. In order to clean an uneven, rough and abrasive surface such as a pavement that is what would be required. Not a tissue or a little spray bottle.

This is the practical explanation, not an excuse. I pick up after my dog, so don't feel the slightest need to justify my behaviour or make excuses for myself. If somebody were to suggest that I scrub a pavement, despite the above practicalities, I'd simply think them to be quite mad and carry on about my day.

Camwombat · 27/06/2013 15:06

mrsBethel, you took what I said completely out of context.

Cat owners have no control over where their cats poop (street, other people's gardens, kids playgrounds, sand pits etc) let alone do they clear it up. Maybe we can have cat licence and DNA testing on their poop too. There is a very good reason doctors tell pregnant women not to deal with cat poop and litter.

The majority of dog owners pick up, and others are clearly stating it is impossible to clear up every minute molecule if their dog unfortunately gets caught short.

D0oinMeCleanin · 27/06/2013 15:08

I have a paved yard. I try to train my dogs as much as possible to only go in our yard, but if we're out for hours/the day and they need to go they can hardly ask me to take them to a public toilet, can they?

Dogs on a decent diet/not ill should do small, firm stools that don't smell too bad and don't leave skid marks. BARF is great for this. However when my dogs are ill or I get a foster in who's got a dicky tummy I know how many hours, bottles of bleach, buckets of boiling water and scrubbing brushes it takes to keep my yard clean. Expecting dog owners to do this on walks is unrealistic.

Dogs can be trained to go on command, but if they're out and about and need to go, they need to go and they can't always tell you, of course if you know your dog well enough, you know when they're thinking of going and can move them somewhere appropriate, if possible. Pooing in the gutter is not safe for the dogs or motorists and Barbra Woodhouse, fortunately, is mostly discredited by those upto date on canine training and behavior.

Dogs aren't the only animals who poo in the great outdoors, there's foxes, badgers, birds, cats, mice, rats, voles etc. etc. etc. No-one goes around follwing them with buckets of bleach and scrubbing brushes do they? Hmm The world is not sterile and nor should it be.

The lady picked up the bulk of the mess. That is all she could have done. YABU and slightly hysterical. I find that people make more mess than animals anyway. Dog shit will eventually wash away, wrappers, cans and plastic bags won't.
