To be annoyed with this dog poo lady

victoriousEaglet · 26/06/2013 23:05

Saw a woman with a huge dog today, without warning dog stopped and did a massive steaming turd on the pavement in busy village centre. She scooped it up with a bag and threw it away, but wasnt very thorough and left a thick skid mark that anyone could step in or wheel pushchair through...this always happens to me!)

I am not really sure what she should have done but I was still annoyed. Maybe she could have used another bag to try and scrape up the skid more thoroughly, or poured water on it, or not let her dog poo there (not a dog owner, not sure how you do this, I confess)

YABU, I pick up the poo in a bag, thats my job done. if I start swishing water around it will just spread it all over the pavement even more.

Proper LOL at "Guide dogs do this so it can't be that hard" though. Best comment on this thread Grin

LouiseSmith · 27/06/2013 12:29

YABU!!!

I for one (as a dog owner) do not carry around a jet wash in my back pocket. The women picked it up, surely that is enough!

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 27/06/2013 12:35

Louise don't you know us dog owners should get on our hands and knees and tongue the pavement clean?

Or, you know, train them to do it at home, it cant be that hard, guide dogs do it and it only takes them about £20k in training fees and about 2 years. Easy peasy Grin

MrsBethel · 27/06/2013 12:37

If you pick up the bulk of it but leave a thick skid remaining then:

  • there's still enough to spread disease
  • there's still enough to cause a shoe / carpet problem
  • it's probably harder to spot now

The whole point of picking up the poo is to prevent others geting dirty / sick as a result of it.

If you do a shoddy job then you're just costing yourself time and effort, and your still sticking two fingers up at society by expecting everone else to put up with your mess and the problems it brings.

So YANBU OP. YANBU.

imnotmymum · 27/06/2013 12:38

problems it brings... MrsBethel sorry had a little giggle.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 27/06/2013 12:41

MrsBethel - washing the skid away doesnt get rid of it either, it just dilutes it, spreads the disease over a wider and is even LESS easy to see.

The only solution is for people to not wear their shoes in the house Wink

Bluecarrot · 27/06/2013 12:42

Always wondered why there couldn't be small flat biodegradable plastic sheets that people could train their dogs to um... Aim for. Then just pull up the corners of the sheet and tie in a knot. No mess on pavement ( unless dog misses.) should I be on dragons den?

I don't have a dog so no idea if that would actually work.

Morgause · 27/06/2013 12:43

My Dsis puppy walked for Guide Dogs for the Blind for years and every pup she had was trained to shit on newspaper on command. A bit of patience and persistence on her part and the pups learned.

I don't understand why anyone thinks it's OK for dogs to shit on pavements or in parks at all. Apart from the occasional accident they should shit at home and owners deal with it there. If they get caught short in public why not take a newspaper for them to shit on and take that home - no skid marks?

The most disgusting thing I saw re dog shit was on a beach where a woman buried the shit in the sand. Lovely for the next child making sand castles. She was too far away for me to yell at. Angry

MrsBethel · 27/06/2013 12:45

Can't say I'm giggling when I'm removing bilious shite covered shoes from my kids before they get in the car. Not even funny whern I have to clean it off later. Must be my sense of humour, I guess?

Pop a few tissues in your pocket, people. Disgusting.

mumofthemonsters808 · 27/06/2013 12:47

I'd just be grateful she picked it up.

HandMini · 27/06/2013 12:48

Reasonable:

To try and push your dog to the side of the road for it to poo, in case of skid

To be considerate about where you walk your dog. If you have the option of a park / country lane, but choose a residential pavement, I'd be more pissed off at you for dog skid.

Not reasonable:

To be expected to do anything further than the above. Carrying round water / disinfectant is above and beyond the call of duty.

As an aside, we live in (London) dog shit central where I pass about give dog turds a day just walking the 5 mins to the tube. I hate hate hate it, so I am appreciate of anyone picking it up and probably have v low standards.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 27/06/2013 12:49

Well, I think its ok because at least I pick it up. Most of the time nothing is left but sometimes there is. As it happens though I dont walk her on pavements because my nail once went through the bag when it hit the pavement

I have actually tried to put something under her in the past but she just moved away, giving me a dirty look, and then held it in for days and got pretty ill. To be fair if someone tried to move my toilet form under my arse while mid thrutch Id be a bit miffed aswell.

ZolaBuddleia · 27/06/2013 12:50

Bluecarrot, I think you've invented something there! Tricky though if it's windy (the weather or the dog). Grin

OneStepCloser · 27/06/2013 12:50

Im loving this thread, maybe a portable jet wash on a little cart that the doggy can pull behind them (bit hard for my pug but Im sure she`d get use to it).

MrsBethel · 27/06/2013 12:53

Let's not get distracted by this whole disinfectant / water thing. Just because that's ludicrous, doesn't mean it's right to just stroll away from the scene of your crime.

Do a proper job with your bag, and have some tissues or something handy if your dog has bowel issues.

Anything less, and you are a pox on society, and doing a shoddy job shouldn't mean you pretend otherwise.

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 27/06/2013 12:58

A tissue won't deal with it either though. It will remove the mark sure, but t won't stop the disease element you're worried about. Disinfectant is the only thing that would immediately deal with that.

OneStepCloser · 27/06/2013 13:03

Responsible owners do clean up as best as they can, they try to make sure that their dogs would not poo in the middle of a pavement, rarely you cant stop them. Anyone leaving dog poo is wrong.

But you cannot get rid of skids, its near on impossible, I carry lots of bags and it did happen once, I scraped as best as I could and got most of it up. Responsible owners try their best.

Mess of any kind is horrible, I hate bloody vomit piles left, rubbish thrown, fab buts and bloody chewing gum as well as dog mess but unfortunately there are some people who seem not to give a damn.

littlewhitebag · 27/06/2013 13:08

I have had to try and remove a large squishy pavement poo with poo bags and tissues plus a bottle of water. There was still a big mark and the mess just spread itself further and further. I have also tried pulling my dog into the gutter at the road side which almost ended in her being run down so i will never do it again.

BionicEmu · 27/06/2013 13:13

A couple of weeks ago I was driving home & when I got to my driveway there was a guide dog that had just done a trail of solid poo along the middle of the pavement in front of my driveway. The poor owner was trying to feel around the pavement to pick it up. So this dog didn't do his business at home. (Incidentally, I did say to the owner not to worry & I'd pick it up for him, I have a dog myself so I really didn't mind. ) So clearly even highly-trained guide dogs get caught short.

If I see my dog start to crouch then I do tend to push him to the side of the pavement though (I mean this as an aside - I don't expect the blind man to do that!)

Wasn't there a thread about this at some point where someone said we should all get our dog's bums to dangle over the edge of the pavement into the road so they didn't do their business on the pavement in the first place?!

Camwombat · 27/06/2013 13:15

Can someone ensure cats only poo in litter trays then...
I clean up after my dog who does get caught short when out, especially if we are out all day.there aren't public loos for dogs But cats drive me spare and are just as if not more so disease ridden.

SparkyTGD · 27/06/2013 13:17

Bluecarrot that's a fab idea, although most dogs move around to find the perfect spot for poo when doing one, the owners would be holding the sheet in anticipation to lay down at just the right moment Grin

My dog did an embarrassing runny poo explosion on a busy path about a month ago, I was mortified, used several bags & tissues then a bucket of water from workshop nearby. It wasn't wholly effective TBH.

dubstarr73 · 27/06/2013 13:21

Guide dogs do still shit on the pavements.A woman across from me has a guide dog and she still clears up after it

I have two whippets, who always poo a runny 'Mr Whippy' after they have been racing round, its near impossible to pick up, but I do my best.

Dog poo doesn't spread disease as long as your dog is wormed regularly.

I know its unpleasant if you step in it, but so is soft chewing gum and all the other stuff that gets chucked on the floor

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2013 13:29

Owning a dog is not a right it is a privilege. Allowing your property to foul public places is not on. I accept you cannot remove every germ from where your dog shits but you can and should remove all visible trace so that it will not end up on my child's shoe.

Yes you may have to spend some time crouched on the pavement scrubbing at your dogs shite with a bottle of water and a cloth , but you chose to have a dog. It is your responsibility to clean up after it. Properly. Anything less is deeply disrespectful of anyone else who uses the same space.
