to expect children to knock on my door

rather than just walk in.

Child (6yo) wanted to know if DS3 (also 6yo) was going out to play so rather than knocking on the door, she came through the open back gate, in through the side door, through the kitchen and into my living room to ask if he was going out. I told her in no uncertain terms that if she wished to speak to me she could knock on the door. This is a child who has known DS since they were born and does come round to play sometimes but even so I think it's rude to just walk in. Tell me I wasn't rude to tell her to f off go away.

You weren't rude. I would have done the same. Creepy little fecker.

I like it. My friends DC walk in to my house, my DC walk in to theirs. But then we do just walk in to each others houses too, sometimes with the DC, sometimes without, so they have learnt it from us.

If you are not happy with that though, YANBU. Each to their own and it is important to lay down the rules YOU are happy with in your home.

Just tell her to knock next time.

I hope in reality you were kind. Children of that age (and she was only 6) are often just learning the social conventions - and also sometimes see all adults as extensions of their own parents. It sounds as if she needed guided more than yelled at. (Although I'm sure you didn't do the latter.)

No I didn't yell, I just firmly said that she wasn't to just walk in but knock on the door.

Can you lock your door, OP? It might be the only way to stop it! Or just ask her to leave until she learns to knock?
