Sssssshhh. I like it. YABU.

Have you read the book, OP? It's actually a pretty good adaptation, imo. (and I'm a massive Tolkein fan!) It's a far closer interpretation of the book than Lord of the Rings was.

Justforlaughs · 24/06/2013 18:20

and I've been waiting for 30 years for this film!! Grin

I didn't think it captured the essence of the book, nor did the LOTR films. The books are lovely and whimsical. And the Radagast scenes were just Hmm No it isn't that good, I agree, it will have mass appeal, though. At least the Silmarillion is safe.

I think the Ralph Bakshi film was a good representation.

ToysRLuv · 24/06/2013 18:26

It was boring as hell. The closest I have come to walking out of the cinema for ages. YANBU.

I liked Lord of The Rings, but maybe only because it was an edited version of the books (couldn't read them - lost interest in page 5). Methinks the director wanted to make another 2 (or 3?) epic films, not caring about how dull it actually is to watch dwarves first talking and singing in a kitchen for about an hour and something, then fighting lots of stuff in a very samey way in identical looking sceneries for another 2 hours. Dire. No eye candy either (dwarves - sorry, but that's a NO from me!).

KikeriFreedomCastle · 24/06/2013 18:29

The BBC CDs of The Hobbit I would recommend too.

I would have liked the songs actually, but I don't think they did them all in full?

Justforlaughs · 24/06/2013 18:31

OK, I'll admit that the Radagast thing was plain WRONG!

saintmerryweather · 24/06/2013 18:32

its not half as overrated as the book

It was a terrible adaptation of the book. The book wasn't the best thing in the universe to begin with, but when they change pretty major plot points (the troll scene being the obvious example) to make it more actiony and "Hollywood" it makes my blood boil.

Kikeri, I read somewhere earlier that there might be more dwarf singing in the extended cut, whenever that comes out.

ToysRLuv · 24/06/2013 18:42

"Extended cut"?

PatPig · 24/06/2013 19:04

Boring film, far too drawn out.

StuntGirl · 24/06/2013 19:14

I quite liked it, but it was the first film I watched after discovering about the Bechdel Test and being a bit Hmm. So that took the shine off a little.
