For being a noise nuisance?

You know when people get their cars all souped-up with blacked out windows, blue lights, all that, and they're trying to make them sound like Formula One cars or something, when it's a really ordinary car. Excuse my lack of car knowledge I have no idea what they get done to make it so loud even when you were inside the house with windows closed. But why do they do it? Why? And they always drive like total nob-ends.

DS was woken by one earlier, it must have been on the main road which is at least 500m away. You can tell it was going really fast too. There used to be a guy on our road with one. He drove like a dick. And it was ridiculously loud. Luckily I think his girlfriend threw him out because he stopped coming round.

AIBU to think this shouldn't be allowed, surely there should be a noise limit? And has anyone ever encountered one of these cars that wasn't driven by a complete wanker? God, they give me the rage.

I think they have to take the back box off. Our back box fell off last week and until it was fixed it sounded just like a boy-racer car.

It was even worse to drive it like that, the noise was deafening. Yanbu.

WMittens · 22/06/2013 22:43

There is a limit, but not everyone obeys the law. There's not much chance of them sounding like F1 cars.

Blue lights are illegal on anything other than emergency vehicles.

Why do they do it? They like the sound. I love the sound (of an interesting engine, most inline 4 cylinder engines sound a bit dull whatever you do to it) but there's a time and a place, and residential areas aren't it.

WMittens · 22/06/2013 22:45

I think they have to take the back box off.

No, usually changing the standard box for a freer-flowing aftermarket one, or removing the cat (or fitting a sports cat), or both.

marjproops · 22/06/2013 22:48

i thought it was illegal and therewas alimit. but there was one once in front of a police car in front of us and they were quite happily noising away.

it gets on my nerves and yes, the ARE driven by would be jensen buttons on a 20mph road.

PrettyKitty1986 · 22/06/2013 22:49

I didn't understand a word of that really. The extent of my knowledge is what df tells me...which is the car was loud because the back box was gone lol.

edlyu · 22/06/2013 22:53

I wouldnt just stop at the boy racers .

I would include the Bass junkies whose idea of of a good evening is to enliven the lives of the entire neighbourhood with their choice of sounds -at the deepest level naturally.

And not forgetting those who similarly like to share their choice of music at every barbecue and party.

I would pass a law that anyone broadcasting a sound that can be heard outside the parameters of the vehicle or building of origin should be fined severely and their equipment (oh er missus) taken away.

Oh yes - when I run the world it will be a much quieter place Grin

It is illegal to modify the exhaust system of car.

marjproops · 22/06/2013 22:58

edlYu please come over to the anti-social thread with me and repeat what you just said!

its a few threads down on this site!

WMittens · 22/06/2013 23:15

It is illegal to modify the exhaust system of car.

Not correct.

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/06/2013 23:19

the law says something like

the exhaust should not produce any noise louder than should be expected by that type of exhaust on that model of car (paraphrased because I don't have the actual wording to hand).

So it is a very grey area.

SHarri13 · 22/06/2013 23:21

Gag, the noise is just horrible and annoys me so much, it makes my blood boil. Just why?!?!?!

OddBoots · 22/06/2013 23:24

There's a very loud motorbike that drives past our house (too fast) at around 5.45am every day, I am sure the technology exists to make them quieter.

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/06/2013 23:32

It is my understanding that the exhaust has to be in keeping with the type of car

So a Honda prelude or a Nissan 200sx could legally have a louder exhaust than something like a beetle.

And no they are not always driven by crap drivers

MidniteScribbler · 22/06/2013 23:37

You can report them over here in Oz. I did for the tosser that lives aoun the corner and goes to work at 5am. He would ge9t to the corner outside my house, spin his tyres, then hit the accelerator to race down the road. I called the cops who paid him a vissit (small country town lol) and he's fixed it a little, but at least he doesn't hoon outside my house at 5am anymore.

perplexedpirate · 22/06/2013 23:42

TELL me about it! People across the road have about 5 children, all between 17-25ish. They are lovely lads but they ALL have souped up cars that they work on at all hours. I suppose it's a nice hobby, but the racket is ridiculous.
Sunday afternoons are the worst; don't they know its nap time?
