Nasty, wanky airline! So many reasons why! Aibu?!

Because it's cheap?

You can get really cheap deals if you get it right, and if they are going where you want to go or are happy to go when in need of a cheap break.

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/06/2013 23:34

I did once, didn't realise how shit they are. I never will again

Cherriesarelovely · 19/06/2013 23:36

They are cheap and fly to the small airport in France that is convenient for me. I know what you mean though, they are a horrible company in general.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/06/2013 23:37

I flew with them last week because they were the only airline flying to where I needed to be on the day I needed to go. I've often found that as they serve some small airports and I like to holiday if the beaten track.

So I don't have much choice.

WafflyVersatile · 19/06/2013 23:37

My experiences of them have been ok ish. Not had delays. Not used them for many years or very often though. Never assume that they will be the cheapest for your needs.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/06/2013 23:37

*off the beaten track

MardyBra · 19/06/2013 23:38

I've never flown with them. DH looked at the online feedback for them and has refused to set foot on a Ryanair flight ever.

I'm fat, so they'd probably charge me extra anyway.

timidviper · 19/06/2013 23:39

I have never flown with Ryanair but have with other budget airlines. Every time I say "never again" but, when the next time comes around, I look at the prices and think maybe it'll be worth the savings.

PatPig · 19/06/2013 23:45

They are really shitty.

On routes where there is competition people fly them because they are cheaper (although they might not be when you add in the extras), and on other routes with no competition there might be no other option apart from a much longer journey, and again you go with them.

You need to think three times before flying Ryanair. Fortunately for us there are many other choices to places we'd want to go.

But some in other areas might not be so lucky, so they are stuck with Ryanair. Which is better than nothing.

LeGavrOrf · 19/06/2013 23:47

I don't mind them, they're cheap and cheerful. No worse than any other flight p, you just have to be prepared for the way they run things.

flipchart · 19/06/2013 23:52

Never had a problem.
I board and don't care where I sit, I take hand luggage only, I pay by debit card and dont need insurance.

I have had loads of holidays that I wouldn't have been able to take.

I go to my friends apartment in Spain for less than 50 quid return.

Suits me.

tungthai · 19/06/2013 23:54

Dh fl

reggiebean · 19/06/2013 23:55

To echo everyone else: Because they're cheap, and they often fly to places others don't, so it's out of necessity.

chunkythighs · 20/06/2013 00:00

Because I remember paying £400 to fly one way to Dublin before they existed. Yes, they may have removed all pleasure and dignity from flying but they (or their business model) have made it possible for many people to see the world.

I still shudder at the thoughts going on the of the 'Superbus' Dublin to London again.

OutragedFromLeeds · 20/06/2013 00:03

They're cheap. They're shite but for a £30 return flight what can you expect? They get you there safely and mostly on time, what more do you want?

KobayashiMaru · 20/06/2013 00:04

Because we want to go places and it does the job? Why wouldn't you?

Helltotheno · 20/06/2013 00:20

Find the planes incredibly claustrophobic and that yellow colour freaks me out... so much so that I find getting moderately pissed for night flights helps.

ilovesooty · 20/06/2013 00:24

I had one of the best flights I've had for years with them last Summer. Repeating the experience this year. Yes, the luggage thing is a pain but it stops me buying too much while I'm away.

HighInterestRat · 20/06/2013 00:27

Two words. Hen. Party. Grin

MummyPigsFatTummy · 20/06/2013 00:35

Before children I found them cheap and quite reliable for getting you where you needed to be. If anything went wrong resulting in a delay they were a nightmare but generally things were ok. I used to fly Stansted to Newquay for weekends by the beach and it was brilliant.

Since DD came along it is totally different. They don't really want families to fly with them and make it obvious. They are the only budget airline, I think, which charges for a car seat and the only one which has no hand luggage allowance for an infant (although the other airlines' policy of allowing a bit extra with a baby may be unofficial).

The aim of their unhelpful policies where children are concerned is presumably to get families off their flights in favour of adults, and it certainly worked with us. We only fly with them now if they are the only airline going where we need to be. Quite often the cost savings with them are marginal when you factor in extras.

FrenchRuby · 20/06/2013 00:57

I've flown with them once, I had no problem at all. I printed out my boarding pass at home, only took hand luggage and paid with debit card so had no extra fees. It cost me something like £70 for a return to Salzburg, the cheapest after that was £300. I'm flying with them again next month.

JassyRadlett · 20/06/2013 01:05

I've never quite got over the time they flew me to not-Brussels instead of not-Paris. The coaches to take us to Beauvais took 3 hours to arrive but were always 'ten minutes away' so no one dared leave for the loo or to get some food. Our coach then got a puncture, so we waited on the side of the motorway for over two hours. By this stage some of us were considering setting up permanently in the village we could just see over a hill.

The kicker came when the coach driver refused to drop us at any of the convenient RER stations we passed on the outskirts of Paris because 'Ryanair runs a point to point service'. So we trundled on another 45 minutes to Beauvais. Finally got back to Paris after 6pm, having boarded the flight in Prestwick at 7.20am. Most people hadn't eaten in that time - our coach driver wasn't allowed to stop so we could get food.

Ryanair could not have been less bothered or apologetic. I particularly felt for all the families with small kids whose Disney weekend was buggered up completely.

Never, ever again.

Quite ok with EasyJet, though.

Orangebirdonatable · 20/06/2013 01:07

After reading the other airline thread, I wondered the same thing. I guess they are ok if you are flying by yourself, but they sound like a nightmare if you have a family.
I have never flown Ryan Air and no have no desire to do so.
