To wonder why anyone would fly with Ryan Air?!

Nasty, wanky airline! So many reasons why! Aibu?!

I've never flown with Ryanair, because my (ex)dh works in the airline industry and would not let me! He's been to see the operation, and says that everyone working for RA is miserable and unhappy. That does not make a happy organisation,. or a happy experience. If they could work somewhere else, they would.
He's also been to Easyjet (amongst others) and found them happy, helpful, and they enjoy their jobs.

(BA are also famously miserable, despite thinking they are the creme.)

This is not an AIBU question.

You are not asking if you are being unreasonable to wonder.

You are saying "Why do people do this?"

Trills · 20/06/2013 08:45

People do it because it is cheaper and/or ore convenient than the alternatives, and they value their money or the time it saves them higher than they value the things they would gain by going with another airline.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 20/06/2013 08:49

I think it is an AIBU actually - as much as any AIBU is, at least - and one which can be answered with a resounding YABU. It is unreasonable and stupid to wonder this, when the answer is staring you in the face: Because It Is Cheap.

icetip · 20/06/2013 08:49

They are what they are. Follow the instructions - not hard - travel light and don't expect anything other than getting from a to b. Checking in a few years back, girl in front is 10kg over the limit - opens case huffing and puffing and takes out 2 pairs of sandals. Shuts case, still huffing and puffing, and amazingly hasn't shed the required 10kg. Proceeds to rant. It's a shit airline but cheap (sometimes) - use it accordingly.

To read this thread you would think all the other airlines treat you like gentle gods. I fly a lot with work with 'good' airlines and they are not at all what they used to be. Last week I boarded a BA flight and was kept on board a hot plane for over an hour before take off. Delays, cancellations, these things happen to all airlines, it's inevitable. Fly Ryanair, save hundreds of pounds and then go out for a meal, stay in a nicer hotel or whatever. FLights are not really a part of the holiday (for me at least).

TerrysNo2 · 20/06/2013 08:54

Because they are the only airline that flies from London - Bremen!

Aka... desperation

Ding ding ding, this post arrived on time. Grin

TerrysNo2 · 20/06/2013 08:55

Easyjet are far far better

My bf flies with them to Ireland quite regularly. She doesn't tell me of any problems, and uses them as a taxi service to visit family and friends there.

I have flown with them a few times, with no dramas, but that Michael O'Leary is the devil incarnate.

Longdistance · 20/06/2013 09:05

I once went over to Ireland on Irish ferries, this was my face Envy all through the journey.

MrsBungle · 20/06/2013 09:06

I've never had an issue. I fly with them to Berlin. I treat it like getting on the bus and certainly don't expect anything fancy.

wigglesrock · 20/06/2013 09:07

Maryz I remember paying over £200 for a flight from Belfast to England Shock RyanAir filled a gap which needed filled.

It's just like getting a bus but quicker. I have flown Ryan Air and never had a problem but have saved a fortune.

wigglesrock · 20/06/2013 09:09

I'd stick a feather up my arse and fly to save 2000 euros Maryz Wink

livinginwonderland · 20/06/2013 09:10

Because they're cheap and I've never had a problem with them. Hand-luggage only, return to Grenoble or Lyon (I forget which) for less than £20 in 2010.

Dawndonna · 20/06/2013 09:16

Ds (18) and his girlfriend (18) have been saving all year to have a holiday in Italy, they can only afford Ryanair; any other airline would add at least a hundred quid to the price.

YoniBottsBumgina · 20/06/2013 09:23

It's fine to shop around and maybe pay more if you are talking about a once a year holiday, but when you have family who live abroad (or a DP, or you're planning to move/are an expat etc) and hence are restricted to which airports you can travel to/from, and want to go fairly regularly, sometimes they really are far cheaper than anywhere else. I'm talking £400 vs £30 kind of difference, which of course mounts up. I prefer flybe for low cost and use tthem when i fan butthey get very expensive as the flights fill up.

I fly to Ireland to see friends and family regularly, and aer lingus have recently cut a lot of their routes from Shannon and Cork while I was getting to grips with pregnancy and a newborn. Ryanair are all that's left, much as I hate them. It wasn't a problem when it was just DH and me, but travelling with a baby now is painful - especially as it's a flat £30 infant fee for DS (he could get cheaper as an adult sometimes!) and he doesn't get his own hand luggage allowance so the nappy bag has to go as mine. And there's always steps down to the gate that you have to wrestle the buggy down instead of the tunnels.

Flew air France recently and it was wonderful! Loads of hand luggage allowance PLUS the nappy bag, checked bag was 23kgs (instead of Ryanair's measly 15 that barely covers the suitcase) and when I was coming down the steps from the plane with DS in my arms, the pilot picked up my bag and carried it to the bottom for me. I fly budget so often that I felt truly spoiled by flying with a proper airline!

But price and location makes Ryanair our most-used airline.

Michael O'Leary is a class A cunt alright though.

PearlyGrey · 20/06/2013 09:35

If you just view them as a bus, and don't take them up on any of the extra charges (I'm normally only away for a week maximum so don't need to check luggage) and stick to their guidelines for bag size/weight, printing your boarding passes etc then they're fine. I've never had any problems with the service either (and have had very bad service from BA at nearly five times the cost!). They've always been the cheapest whenever I've been booking a holiday!

frostyfingers · 20/06/2013 09:36

Try this: - it's brilliant.

ILikeBirds · 20/06/2013 09:37

We fly to Billund in Denmark a couple of times a year, my only complaint is they stopped the flights from Birmingham so we have to go to Stansted. Only been delayed once and then only for a short while, never had any other problems.

theDudesmummy · 20/06/2013 09:38

We had an absolutely excellent experience with Ryanair while flying with a child with special needs last summer, they were lovely and basically made the whole trip completely trouble-free when it could have been a nightmare. So it's not all bad.
