Nasty, wanky airline! So many reasons why! Aibu?!

YABU.

Flew with them last year, was fine.

It was just like being on a train/bus, got me from A to B safely and for a reasonable fair.

I printed it boarding passes, weighed luggage before etc no problems here.

IRCL · 20/06/2013 01:23

fare nother fair, it's late.

PatPig · 20/06/2013 01:45

Easyjet are a reasonable airline, fantastic next to Ryanair.

GoshAnneGorilla · 20/06/2013 02:11

I've flown with them several times, they've got the job done, but I feel like they really rub it in that you're flying with a no frills airline.

Easy jet are much better and I love their Amman route as it's saved us a fortune!

Want2bSupermum · 20/06/2013 02:29

You couldn't pay me enough to get on a Ryan Air flight.

I avoid the heavily discount flights after taking one once that was a nightmare. If everything goes well you are fine but one small hiccup and you are screwed. If you fly with a legacy airline they normally have the resources behind them to sort you out.

DH is talking about flying Norwegian later this year as they are starting a NY to/from Oslo flight so seats are cheap. I have found that cheap airlines normally equates to piss poor service and crappy passengers (bug bear of mine is people in economy buzzing crew for things like drinks - it is a sure way to end up with a pissed off crew and therefore crappy flight). If flying economy I will def try to fly with better airline such as United (well Continental), Lufthansa, BA and KLM. The only exception is SAS. I do everything I can to avoid them. Im ok with virign but they don't have routes that work for us.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 20/06/2013 07:11

Because they are the only airline that flys from Newcastle to Dublin Hmm. Otherwise I avoid them like the plague.

sleeplessbunny · 20/06/2013 07:19

Hate hate hate ryanair

Am forced to fly with them because they are the only ones on the route I regularly fly. The only alternative is to go via heathrow, which is another sort of hell. I find that they are no cheaper once you have factored in luggage. Agree with other posters on them actively discouraging families from travelling.

They also treat their staff like shit, DB has many friends who fly for them and the stories are awful. They basically make money out of their own pilots.

funkybuddah · 20/06/2013 07:23

I've used them, it wad like getting a bus from London to Dublin but it got me there which is all I wanted really. I would use them again for very short trips like that.

Roses12s · 20/06/2013 07:26

They are shit but without them I couldn't afford to see my mam three times a year. I take a different child each time. But when the whole family goes we take the ferry. I always look at aerlingus cos they are lovely but they are only competive if you are a lone traveler because the cost difference adds up when the numbers travelling increase. So Gerry bless you your a cad but you get me home.

Branleuse · 20/06/2013 07:28

Theyre horrid. We went with them to malta a couple of years ago because they were the cheapest for the time we wanted, but the whole flight they attempted to sell us lottery tickets etc. Barged up and down the aisles asking. It was the least relaxing flight ive ever been on. I was in the aisle seat, and i kept trying to have a nap but the cabin crew just kept bumping into me when they really didnt need to.
We both said that next time we would rather pay more or choose another destination rather than use them again.
Im ok with budget, and EJ arent too bad, but RA was just a stressful experience from start to end

LiegeAndLief · 20/06/2013 07:28

Because the alternative to a £400 flight with Ryanair was a £3,000 flight plus stopover with BA. It wasn't very pleasant but at least it meant I could fly.

SnookyPooky · 20/06/2013 07:32

They don't fly to my UK airport from Cyprus so I don't use them. I also find their website difficult to navigate.
I looked into a cabin crew job with them once, you have to pay for your training!
EZ are the best for our needs and cheap enough if booked early.

HollyBerryBush · 20/06/2013 07:37

We flew with them once, it reminiscent of the Father Ted flight with everyone clutching rosary beads and doing a few hail marys . Those were the days of the 99p flights!

MakeTeaNotWar · 20/06/2013 07:40

Since Aer Lingus pulled out, they are the only airline flying Gatwick - Cork. It wasn't cheap at all, but fine - service was good

ThisWayForCrazy · 20/06/2013 07:43

Never had a problem with them. Also, they've been great with our children. We use them regularly to fly to see the ILs.

YABU to wonder why other people don't use them. If you don't like them then fine.

ConferencePear · 20/06/2013 07:48

I fly with them regularly. They go from an airport near me in the UK to near where I want to be in France. They are cheap.
I used to love transatlantic flights with BA, bit I paid very much more for the privilege.

Umlauf · 20/06/2013 08:01

Ryanair have taken my to Bournemouth airport instead of Stanstead, and to Genoa instead of Pisa. Mind you, that was in the days of 99p flights and as my expectations were always so low it was hard to get too disappointed by them!

Now however, they cost the same as EasyJet (who at least smile at you) so I never even look on their website unless they come up on proce comparisons. I wouldn't stop flying with them though because I always take the cheapest option - we live abroad and aren't well off so I'm more concerned about visiting my family than good service.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 20/06/2013 08:03

they do have quite a few unique routes
until recently they were the only airline flying from Manchester to Rome without a change, which i was surprised by

DeliciousIrony · 20/06/2013 08:12

I have never had a problem with them - perfect for cheap minibreaks to Europe. My flights have always been on time, never been treated badly by staff...just make sure you're on time and your hand luggage fits the measurements they give on the website.

Laquila · 20/06/2013 08:12

We usually base our shoulder-season holiday on Ryanair's cheapest offer - we're pretty happy to camp anywhere in France, Spain, Croatia or Italy, so they're ideal for us. If you're on a budget and have some flexibility in terms of destination then I think they're a Godsend.

I never understand why people moan about them not always having rock-bottom prices once you've factored in the extras. To my mind, you factor in the extras before you make a decision, and if Ryanair are still the cheapest all in, and you don't mind the constant lottery-ticket-flogging, then you go with them! It's not like they're contractually obliged to offer the cheapest fare on every single route, and it's simple enough to work out the full price in advance of actually paying it.

Laquila · 20/06/2013 08:15

Sorry, meant to add - obviously you don't get extras like a free meal included, but again, if you factor in a stop-off at Boots/M&S to pick up buggies on your way to the airport, or take food from home, then there won't be any nasty surprises.

I have to say, in all my years of flying Ryanair, I don't think I've ever been seriously delayed with them or had them lose any luggage. (This does remind me, though, of that brilliant Rhod Gilbert sketch about them losing his luggage - YouTube it!)

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 20/06/2013 08:19

Because there isn't always a choice of airline? To travel to the city my ILs live in, it's Ryanair or very expensive local airline only. And actually there isn't really anything wrong with them. They are usually on time, and cheap. I see them as equivalent to a coach journey. No frills or legroom, but you get from A to B safely. Meh.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 20/06/2013 08:23

we have been let down badly by them...

however

we are flying with them again this summer
stansted to pisa

we live stupidly close to stansted so that is our best bet
IF all goes well (which statistically it could) it will have been a reasonable price and very convenient.

mummylin2495 · 20/06/2013 08:34

We have used Ryanair many times and never had a problem. It's so easy for us because it flies from our local airport. The luggage allowance is a nuisance, but it's surprising how little clothes you can get Away with. It has allowed us to have many more holidays than if we had to go with another airline which would mean we had to travel from Bournemouth to London. No complaints here. You get what you pay for.
