So the "using talc on your nether regions increases your ovarian cancer risk" story is doing the rounds in the media again. (Daily Mail)

There's an argument to be had about how these risks are being communicated in the media. That's not my point. My point is that I'm flabbergasted by the claim that 40% of women feel it necessary to dust their bits with talc on a regular basis.

Is this really true? If so, WHY???? The thought of doing this never even occurred to me. Are these women mad, or am I just a manky old bint?

Apologies for the Daily Mail link. For the sake of balance, here's Cancer Research UK's take on the topic.

Woah! Flashback!

I'd totally forgotten that in the year or so after starting my periods, before I moved to tampons, I put talc on the sanitary towel to stop it smelling, as instructed by my mum. Shock

proseccomecca · 19/06/2013 17:14

I remember a report on Telly years ago (over 10 years at least) with Angela Rippon reporting that some ovarian cysts were reported to contain talc. I used to use it after swimming to feel drier quicker and occasionally for thigh chafe. I stopped after watching that report.

I also remember wishing I could use Johnsons Baby Powder on my babies because of the delicious smell. I didn't and still don't use it on the kids but do keep some in the cupboard and occasionally squeeze it to get the scent in the air!

I also remember using it as a teenager as a "dry" shampoo when my teenage hair was a little greasy (boak) - cheapskate's Batiste Grin

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 19/06/2013 17:18

I have never put talc on my bits.

storynanny · 19/06/2013 17:21

Yes it is perfect for getting sand off feet at the beach. Shake liberally all over little ones feet, rub off gently with a towel and all the sand grains will disappear. Always been an essential part of my beach equipment over the years.

ParkerTheThief · 19/06/2013 17:41

I use talc on my neck and chest in the summer as its the only thing that prevents me getting dreadful prickly heat.
At one point I was using cornflour as that works well but I used to carry it in my handbag in a plastic bag and DH said I looked like a drug dealer.

YoniRanger · 19/06/2013 17:55

But there was bleach in the water!

TBH it was more the eye bleeding visual Grin

SunshineBossaNova · 19/06/2013 18:53

Ooh, thanks for feet tip nanny.

wamabama · 19/06/2013 18:59

Haha. I used to, or naughtily deodorant, when I was younger and went clubbing. If you go bald it gets a lot sweatier and I really didn't want a sweaty foo Grin. I haven't in years though, haven't used or even seen talc in years tbf.

Sparklingbrook · 19/06/2013 19:02

You sprayed your foo wama? Grin

Sorry, posted twice Blush

Yeah! I perfumed it a few times too.

One of the best thread titles ever! I am howling at paper mache piñata. Grin

SoleSource · 19/06/2013 19:54

TalcandTurnips explain yourself Grin

I talc my under boobs and my groin,

Savlon is waay better than stupid Sudocreame

badbride · 19/06/2013 20:12

So, the consensus seems to be that it is largely a thing the older generations did. Along with putting Dettol in their baths and using medicated loo roll (that doubled as razor-sharp greaseproof paper) to make their minges truly squeaky clean and free of all that nasty scary ladyness that might make their husbands' willies fall off.

Come to think of it, some of Grandma's friends did squeak when they walked. Now we know why Grin

Oh I stopped talking under boobs I Savlon! Talc made me sore

Notcontent · 19/06/2013 21:09

Actually, none of this is new. Remember hearing years ago that talc is bad news. It's dangerous if you inhale it. So now not recommended for babies, or for anyone else for that matter.

internationallove985 · 19/06/2013 21:13

I hate talc. xx

merrymouse · 19/06/2013 21:18

I thought talc was something people used because in the old pre central heating days houses tended to be damper and colder so it was difficult to feel really dry after a bath.

littlewhitebag · 19/06/2013 21:24

I haven't read the whole thread but would like to admit freely, here and now, i have powdered my minge. Sometimes in the summer, when wearing a skirt, it gets a bit sweaty up by the mingey region. A light dusting of talc round that area helps immensely. I am obviously ancient 50

VikingLady · 19/06/2013 22:06

Is it weird that instead of talcing my thighs in hot weather, I vaseline them?

HollyBerryBush · 19/06/2013 22:17

MIL always used to say that using talc clogged up your tubes and you'd be sterile - always some milage in old wives tales.

Very much and old persons thing - I never even used talc on my babies - I dried them properly. I couldn't be doing with all that dust all over the place.

QueenOfCats · 19/06/2013 22:24

I talc liberally after every bath/shower - including my fanj! Blush

Always have done, and agree that is useful when you have big boobs or are fat (I'm both).

CheerfulYank · 20/06/2013 01:36

Farewell was there sand at the park? Woman could have been putting it on her daughter to keep the sand off. :)

DH works in the office part of a machine shop...I guess the shop itself is very hot in the summer and one of the guys who works there makes no bones about cornstarching his ass to keep it from chafing. Keeps a box in the men's bathroom. Apparently he said he gets "pants full of gravy" when it's really hot.

Rosa · 20/06/2013 02:39

Talc in the beach bag always gets rid of the sand off feet... Dh puts it in his shoes to get rid of the smell.

In really hot humid weather I have dusted waist and thighs but not much else..

SquinkiesRule · 20/06/2013 02:44

Baby powder here (US) is made of corn starch (corn flour) and added perfume. I never used it on the kids, but if you get heat rash it's quite good at preventing it. pat a bit under the boobs, and bum, corn flour isn't harmful, it's talcum powder that is supposed to be bad.
Love the idea of a sprinkle in the knickers and a poof of powder when you let go of the elastic Grin good for hot weather.
