So the "using talc on your nether regions increases your ovarian cancer risk" story is doing the rounds in the media again. (Daily Mail)

There's an argument to be had about how these risks are being communicated in the media. That's not my point. My point is that I'm flabbergasted by the claim that 40% of women feel it necessary to dust their bits with talc on a regular basis.

Is this really true? If so, WHY???? The thought of doing this never even occurred to me. Are these women mad, or am I just a manky old bint?

Apologies for the Daily Mail link. For the sake of balance, here's Cancer Research UK's take on the topic.

And I would rather have dry under-boob.

I use baby powder in summer. Put some into my shoes so they don't smell/ sweat. I don't like sprays cos of blocked nose/ sinus issues and was told years ago to use as few sprays as possible by nose doctor.

my husband does the same :)

Gonnabmummy · 19/06/2013 14:12

My grandma used to throw talc over us after a bath at hers. It went all over floor but it wasn't because it was put down there, just threw towards chests, arms and rubbed in lol

BOF · 19/06/2013 14:20

I love talc- I don't care if it makes me old-fashioned. The smell makes me happy. You can get special foof talc too, Vagisil.

Feminine · 19/06/2013 14:21

The Johnson's one in the US is made from corn starch.

In case anyone is interested! Grin

Dahlialover · 19/06/2013 15:11

I have always used talc for dry shaving (with sharp new razor) as get in-growing hairs otherwise.

It is really good at stopping the bathroom door squeaking, where it rubs on the wooden threshold. I remembered somewhere from the depths of my brain that it could be used as a lubricant (not personal!) and it works fine for about a year.

Startail · 19/06/2013 15:18

Top of legs and under boobs, benefit from a little talc.

Plastic lined sandals benefit from a lot of talk, but benefit even more from a trip to the bin.

Jubelteen · 19/06/2013 15:28

Lush 'Silky Underwear' dusting powder is also made from cornstarch. I'm a big fan and keep a supply in my gym bag, great when getting dressed in a hurry to help get my tights on for work. Don't use it at home because of the mess.

lougle · 19/06/2013 15:35

It's not surprising. It's potent stuff. When people suffer repeated collapsed lungs, one treatment option is an injection of talc into the pleural cavity - it creates an inflammatory response, then scar tissue forms, sticking the lung to the chest wall so that it can't collapse any more.

Varya · 19/06/2013 15:35

Someone at work had a Brazilian and I asked her if she had a 'plume' left by way of the family crest. We fell about the office with laughter and she was hysterical! Talc is handy under de boobs to stop bra chaffing. But I got breast cancer! Any connection?

GilmoursPillow · 19/06/2013 16:25

I have chafe-prone thighs but I use very unsexy long-legged knickers from M&S (like white cotton cycling shorts) to address that problem.

I do use baby powder sometimes on on my hair when I can't be bothered to wash it and don't have to be anywhere particularly smart

FobblyWoof · 19/06/2013 16:31

I put talc at the top of my legs on the inside, not actually in my fange. Are we talking like, ahem, up in there? That's weird. I do my legs because I sweat there, always have even when I was thin.

YoniRanger · 19/06/2013 16:37

Some woman dusted her fanboy in the communal swimming changing room the other day. Leaving a huge circle of talc THAT HAD TOUCHED HER FANNY on the floor.

I know she saw me heaving.

NettoSuperstar · 19/06/2013 16:38

Good grief, you learn something every day on here.
Those of you who use talc to stop the sweats, now, does it not eventually mingle with the sweat to create a sort of paste?
Surely pasty underboob is not great? Confused

valiumredhead · 19/06/2013 16:44

Yoni-you had just swum in divinely the same bath water as her,a bit of talc of neither here not there at that pointWink

valiumredhead · 19/06/2013 16:44

Netto-if it did do you think people would use it?

Bunbaker · 19/06/2013 16:45

I have never heard of talcing ones boobs, but what do I know as I don't have huge boobs (or even medium size ones Sad)

NettoSuperstar · 19/06/2013 16:46

Though tbf, my home fanjo wax had me almost sealed shut, and my nethers looking like a bunch of nursery school children had done a collage on it, owing to the amounts of tissue stuck all over it.

First and last home fanny wax.

lolaflores · 19/06/2013 17:01

When I was younger, part of my big night out prep was to put hair conditioner on my belows....just in case. Though I did spend the restof the night sliding off any chairs I sat on. so I didn't pull cos everyone thought I was pissed or having a seizure. Never. Again.

Sparklingbrook · 19/06/2013 17:02

Netto, with Liquid Talc you apply it under boob and let it dry this may or may not involve holding boobs in the air.

MammaTJ · 19/06/2013 17:05

I read many years ago that most ovarian cysts comprise of talc. That was when I stopped using it as liberally as I was. I have also taught my DDs not to use talc in their nether regions.

NettoSuperstar · 19/06/2013 17:07

I'm small of boob, but liquid talc?
How does that work then?
Liquid that dries you out. That sounds scary.
