So the "using talc on your nether regions increases your ovarian cancer risk" story is doing the rounds in the media again. (Daily Mail)

There's an argument to be had about how these risks are being communicated in the media. That's not my point. My point is that I'm flabbergasted by the claim that 40% of women feel it necessary to dust their bits with talc on a regular basis.

Is this really true? If so, WHY???? The thought of doing this never even occurred to me. Are these women mad, or am I just a manky old bint?

Apologies for the Daily Mail link. For the sake of balance, here's Cancer Research UK's take on the topic.

Yes it is an old fashioned thing...haven't done it for years...though I am from the generation who thought vaginal deodorants were a Good Thing (sheesh)

However, for those who think it is inherently odd (as distinct from risky) ...surely not half as odd as minge shaving/waxing (which I get is not risky...just vair vair strange)

I would also say I am loving the pinata comment but I can't find a tilda!

I saw a woman putting talc very liberally all over her dd's legs in the park the other day. The dd's legs were perfectly normal-looking and she wasn't wet. DS looked over and said 'That lady's sun cream is really odd' which were my thoughts exactly. Any idea what that was all about?

"Yes it's definitely an age thing, like waist slips."

I don't use talc, but I do have a waist slip as one of my maxi dresses is very thin, and if I stand in the light you can see the parsnip shape of my legs.

In the days when i actually wore skirts, i used to talk the tops of my thighs to prevent rub (I was 7 stone, but still got thigh rub) - it worked for about 10 minutes on a hot day, then got slimy and sticky. These days, I simply don't wear skirts. Much more comfortable.

Actually, I'm tempted to powder my minge and leave interesting prints in random places.

Really sorry to hear of your discomfort DrHolmes. My suggestion was more to encourage you not to ditch what sounds like an effective remedy on the basis of a crappy story in a newspaper.

if you powder and dont shave wouldnt it look quite christmassy? and surely if you talc your minge dont you have a snow globe effect everytime you pull your knickers down

I might need to talc for research purposes

I would worry that it would turn to paper mâché and Dh would have to beat it like a piñata Grin really laughed at this but wonder how sweets and toys would get in your knickers

There used to be a lady at the gym who would shower and then vigorously towel dry herself right next to me, pop her knickers on, pull the waist band open and liberally sprinkle talc inside and then snap them back. Yes there was a satisfying talc cloud, but it would go all over me! I always imagined her foof flaps must be like the doors on Stars In Their Eyes, with the clouds of dry ice puffing out Confused

Gawd - I must be an old lady, because I do occasionally powder the outside of my minge (with imperial leather talc, not baby powder) because it makes me feel cooler and more comfortable - and prevents a bit of chafing. I don't wear - or even possess - a waist slip, though. Does that make me a bit more acceptable?

Leverette - In that case, we should see skin cancer where talc is applied (we don't) and biopsies of such cancers would have shown talk as the cause a long time ago, like HPV in cervical cancer biopsies (they haven't).

The claim here is that talc travels through the vaginal canal, up through the cervix, and into the ovaries. And that is hard to understand, too - why doesn't it cause any problems at all on the way in the labia, vagina, cervix, or uterus? Even assuming that talc has magical powers of swimming upstream, that is.

I know badbride :) but a lot of people on this thread also say its a risk and that last post from Leverette has worried me. Shards. Oh god.
Imagine if I carried on using it and did get ovarian cancer.

I grew up using talc after baths, but haven't used it like that for years. I do still use it on feet after swimming and at the beach to get sand of legs/feet though.

Well I'm 53 and it never occurred to me to talc any part of my bod! Mum owned talc but I've no idea what she did with it...

Bought baby powder when DD was born but I think it sat unused until I threw it away when we moved house as I didn't see the point...

You need talc when finding holes in a bicycle inner tube.

Whilst I pick myself up from giggling at the lovely word 'poonani pinata', I have to admit my mum always talc-ed us after our bath.

She would poof a bit into the palm of her hand and pat it on - bottom/twinkle and under our arms - to ensure we were completely dry.....why she just didn't make sure we were dry is beyond me.

Now (and I'm not old), I use it occasionally in summer, patted delicately onto my thigh to prevent chafing (lovely thought) and it really helps.

I'm actually not sure how on earth the fine particles would make it to your ovaries or even cervix but when DD was born (2002), I remember lots of anti-talc articles saying to put it onto a cotton ball before applying so it wasn't inhaled by the baby.
