interview tomorrow and DP thinks I should wear my black primark suit. It's ill fitting but I don't have much money and was the best i could afford. My other option is this dress www.amychildsofficial.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=94&product_id=298 . DP says that it's better to play it safe in white shirt & black suit rather than feel stupid.

I think looking good in the dress is much better than the frumpy suit! His office is full of techy people. I don't think he understands women do wear more fashionable things to offices nowdays. Any opinions? I know it's not right, but I do think that flattering my figure and looking 'pretty' will help with my confidence if nothing else!

Having seen how many people say no, it may well not be worth the risk of coming across someone like them at an interview panel. I'm a bit surprised.

ParadiseChick · 18/06/2013 17:19

Trouser or sort suits are so ruth badger

ParadiseChick · 18/06/2013 17:20

*skirt

Bobyan · 18/06/2013 17:22

It's not what you wear, but how you wear it.

Simple hair and make up, minimal jewellery, mid height heels = no problem

Big hair, loads of slap, huge earrings, knockers hanging out and hooker heels = no job.

Good luck!

CoolaSchmoola · 18/06/2013 17:24

I also have an interview tomorrow and vetoed my usual suits because in all honesty they no longer fit post DD. This thread has made me doubt my choice of outfit (new, until now very comfortable with) massively to the point where I am contemplating another attempt at shopping. I didn't see a single suit in my size though.

Wish I'd never clicked on this thread Sad

chloesaidfred · 18/06/2013 17:24

I'd wear it. Assuming you don't have that cleavage Grin

It's not inappropriate. And yes I'm afraid better looking/ well presented candidates do in fact get jobs over the less easy-on-the-eye. A killer dress wont get you a job, but in a like for like candidate situation it just might! Although, saying that, the key is to research the company well.

Loiter around outside and see what everyone else is wearing - then go a notch smarter. You can't fail.

I have marked a candidate down for failing to research our company by wearing a stuffy suit when that is totally inappropriate for our business. Obviously you need to be smart though.

chloesaidfred · 18/06/2013 17:25

Ha ha Ruth Badger

Tortington · 18/06/2013 17:25

fuck - i dont even know who she is

i think the dress is fine without the push up tits looks professional enough.

as long as its not spiked heels and red lipstick with an over coiffed side bun - i reckon its fine.

although if the job is getting mucky, i would be worried that they would think i'm above getting my hands dirty.

but then - i guess you can tell them otherwise with your military experience n shit, so fuck it - i like the dress
go for it
good luck

CajaDeLaMemoria · 18/06/2013 17:29

You don't need a push up bra to look booby in that dress.

I do, whether I wear a normal bra or a minimizer bra or no bra at all. It's how it's cut and lined - it draws the eyes down however you wear it.

I sent it back because it looked too night clubby even with a ponytail and blazer.

I'd go for something nice from M&S. There's far too much that could go wrong with the dress and you don't want to give the wrong impression.

LeGavrOrf · 18/06/2013 17:51

lol at over coiffed side bun.

I never wear suits or jackets, haven't for years.

ParadiseChick · 18/06/2013 18:00

No one does anymore do they? Lots of dresses, trousers with nice tops (not blousey or shirts)

News flash - you're allowed to be feminine, you don't have to dress like a man to get a job!

glastocat · 18/06/2013 18:01

I have worked in finance and banking for twenty years and this would not be appropriate for an interview, not professional looking enough Im afraid. I was coached once in presentation skills as we were going for a big contract, it was all two and a half inch heels, well cut expensive suit, no more than three pieces of jewellery iirc, discreet but well applied make up, and absolutely no cleavage. so, polished and professional, rather than attractive. Obviously if you are applying for a different job, different dress codes apply, but if anything I'd say academia is even stuffier than finance.

quesadilla · 18/06/2013 18:14

I wouldn't, personally.... I think for the job you are going for its just a bit too dressy.
I think if accessorised properly it could look ok but it looks a bit too much like evening wear,

I know it sounds dull but an interview suit for a job like that needs to not take up all the attention. It might go down well but it could backfire by making you look quite ditzy, whereas the suit won't let you down.

LeGavrOrf · 18/06/2013 18:19

God I haven't worn a shirt for years either.

Either dresses or trousers and smart tops (rarely). 99 percent of the time dresses. Fuck knows why. Just find them smart and comfortable (plus tights in winter warmer than trousers).

MrsLyman · 18/06/2013 18:20

Who is Amy Childs? Be interested to know if knowing who she is affects people's impression of the dress.

Btw why do people think the OP is interviewing for academia, she said it's a graduate position in a company.

WizardofOs · 18/06/2013 18:20

After I had been in one workplace for a while a colleague said to me 'When you were shown around the office after your interview we looked at your suit and thought you were probably bonkers'.

I thought I looked smart yet fashionable Hmm.

PrettyKitty1986 · 18/06/2013 18:28

I think the fact that Amy Childs is modelling it is definitely affecting people's opinions.

If it were on someone less...slutty...it's just a smart, fashionable dress IMO. Amy Childs looks like she needs a good scrub at the best of times.

apatchylass · 18/06/2013 18:37

Wear the dress. If you feel good in the dress, wear it and add low heels and low key make up. It's smart and would only look too dressy if you tottered in on stilettos with full evening make up on.

IME, the most important aspect of dressing for an interview is to wear something you feel good in and feel like yourself in. I remember wearing a black suit to an important interview and feeling really dull and hot and uncomfortable. Next time a really crucial interview came up I ignored DH's advice to wear the blumming suit and wore something far less interviewy, that I felt like myself in. Got the job.

sagfold · 18/06/2013 18:45

I have an interview tomorrow so decided to have hair tidied up. BIG mistake - now have a virtual skinhead, nothing I can do tp improve situation as hair so short. It looks quite alarming.

ParadiseChick · 18/06/2013 18:53

The fact it is Amy Child's will be closing people's judgement. Think fame boobs, big hair and vajazzles. She's of the z list The Only Way Is Essex, had her own clothing range, perfume and vajazzles. Like a cut price Katie Price.

moustachio · 18/06/2013 18:59

Sorry this has turned into what should I wear, rather than AIBU! I do really, really appreciate your opinions. I've put two pics on my profile (please excuse state of my living room!)

OP posts:
BackforGood · 18/06/2013 19:03

Well, it didn't colour my opinion - I have no idea who she is, just assumed it was a 'catalogue model' and was looking at the dress not the model.

AnyFucker · 18/06/2013 19:16

I can't access your profile, OP

Sallyingforth · 18/06/2013 19:40

Ditto here. No idea who the woman is, but she looks a good match for the dress.

Picturepuncture · 18/06/2013 19:43

Nope profile not public yet OP.
