Re Potato Wedges and DH - he has agreed to abide by MN decision (trivial)

So MN jury its up to you - DH has agreed that whatever you decide, he will stick with...

Last night we were discussing what to have for tea tonight - agreed quiche and salad. He eats half of a family size quiche.

He thinks this is insufficient (with salad - bog standard so I don't drip feed, lettuce, tomato and cucumber), so I am doing potato wedges with it.

The wedges are big. He wants FIVE. I told him this was pure gluttony and three would be sufficient. He thinks I'm being silly.

MumnGran don't worry it was a cross post - I realised you meant the fish fingers.

Don't worry about saying things nicely. Clearly I serve bird sized portions.

On the weekend I did a roast chicken, LOTS of roast potatoes, parsnips, leeks in cheese sauce, peas and yorkshire pudding. And shitloads of gravy. That was ok though wasn't it?

revisits every meal I have ever cooked for signs of meanness

Actually DH is always surprised at the tiny portions at my mums. Frozen pizza for four adults anyone?

I wonder if I have inherited meal-stingi-itis (as Doc McStuffin would say)

how many is lots?

just kidding! sounds good to me.

HorryIsUpduffed · 18/06/2013 12:45

On the hospital menu for my first lunch post-natal was "pork pie salad" Grin

I really want wedges now.

Fish fingers are tiny these days.
I am sure they were practically twice the size, when we we all 7/10 etc.
I find a pack of 12 no good, if ds1 has a friend round. (12 between ds1, freind and ds2, is just not enough).
So I have had to start buying costco packs of 48.

SolomanDaisy · 18/06/2013 12:48

One fishfinger? Three of those tiny wedges? Yep, your visitors definitely have a second tea!

gotthemoononastick · 18/06/2013 12:49

Mrsoblomov....the legendary meals will forever be spoken about.Middle aged 'children' often visit here and they remember all triumphs and disasters on the food front!!

OK. I will have a new approach to feeding all who enter my home.

kotinka - MIL is a successful dieter but she has little joy in life. Bread is spoken about with awe as if it is the food of the gods and only to be eaten on special occasions.

I only feed child visitors one fish finger (not adults) - and I do cook more but they often don't finish the first one ... and then I erm polish off the remainder.

That's worse isn't it? I starve guests and pig out myself...

kontinka the day my DD eats salad she can have as many fish fingers as she wants.

I thought half a family quiche was quite a lot but I can see that he needs to fill up on quiche to make up for the woeful lack of other food (salad doesn't count as it takes more energy to eat than it gives you).

One fish finger???!!!

My toddler can eat three! We use a pack of 12 per meal! We are not fat btw!

MsGee · 18/06/2013 13:13

I wish I could get DD to eat veg. She stopped 2 years ago (she is 5 now), along with fruit (other than dried fruit).

I used to cook lovely nutritious meals for her . GP said we had tried everything he would suggest and said to just get on with what she does eat (meat, fish, carbs, dairy). Since then its a battle to stop her not restricting her diet further. A while back she started to refuse milk so we had to work to maintain dairy in her diet - which we have done successfully but it meant the whole focus on food was just running to stand still (if that makes sense).

Whenever I push veg she refuses to eat any foods that I have previously given her and she has been ok with. So now, we slowly introduce things. Its taken a year to get her to eat potato.

Ah writing this makes me realise why all the pleasure in cooking at home has gone Sad

Haha at one fishfinger.

I was friends with you in the 80s and came round your house for tea didn't I? Did your mum serve up smash mashed potato in ice cream scoops?

I think one fishfinger is too little, tbh, unless they are toddlers.

Are you one of these famed mumsnet loons who can get 7 meals out of a chicken? I remember reading a thread one day where for a Sunday lunch the mumsnetter shared a chicken LEG with a family of 4.

flowery · 18/06/2013 13:16

Now I not only want quiche but I also want a fish finger sandwich.

WilsonFrickett · 18/06/2013 13:17

One fish finger? Now you're really taking it to extremes! That's nothing! A mere orange blip on the horizon of my hunger...

I often have four on white bread with butter and spicy mayo. Tell your packet-licking MIL to chew on that!

WilsonFrickett · 18/06/2013 13:18

Although I can indeed get 7 meals out of a chicken Blush

LeGavrOrf · 18/06/2013 13:21

TELL me about the 7 meals wilson (I do love your name btw)

DeathMetalMum · 18/06/2013 13:21

We stopped buying shop bought quiche as one was too small for me, dp and dd plus the price went up. I now make my own and we have enough for a dinner/lunch for me and dd another day. With lots of wedges and salad, dd probably has at least 3 wedges and she is 2!

MsGee · 18/06/2013 13:24

No ... lordy a chicken feeds us for one meal (DD does eat meat!). Any left is used later that day for a sandwich.

The big fish fingers we use only fit two on bread - so probably equal to four normal ones? No butter and mayo though! Fish finger sarnies are with mayo (no butter) and black pepper.

MsGee · 18/06/2013 13:25

Orf did you live up north as a child.

you didn't get mash though. just half a boiled spud. And some bread if you were lucky. no pudding.

Even for me I fail to see how four people share a chicken leg. I don't skimp on roasts though. You have to eat till you can't move!

SoupDragon · 18/06/2013 13:26

I would cut up an appropriately sized jacket potato of my choosing into the right number of wedges he has requested. But I make my own wedges so this may not work for you!
