To be annoyed with DH over some onion?

Doodledumdums · 15/06/2013 00:21

Back story: I HATE raw onion. It actually makes me irrationably angry when people eat it! The smell lingers in the house for days, and I can smell it on people for ages after they eat it and it really makes me feel physically sick. I know this is weird, but I can't change it, raw onion is just bleugh!

Anyway, DH has just come in from work with a kebab (YUCK!), which is COVERED in raw white onion (the worst kind IMO). I have been suffering from a horrible cold and cough all week, and feel horrid, I have been looking after our 5mo all day who I think is a bit under the weather himself as he didn't go to sleep until gone 11:30pm and has been really difficult today- so I politely asked DH if he could PLEASE not eat the onion...but he ate the whole lot. Now he is going to sleep next to me, snoring all night, and I will be engulfed by a disgusting onion smell each time I get up for night feeds, while at the same time feeling like rubbish :-(

Am I being unreasonable to have expected him not to eat it...or is he being unreasonable for not just eating around the manky onion?

I fear it is probably me who is the unreasonable one- in my defence I am really tired and feel poorly. In any case, I should still probably ltb.

Oh god yes cheese and onion crisps are evil!! As are kebabs, eugh eugh eugh!

Whatalotofpiffle · 15/06/2013 01:14

Sorry I love raw onion and cannot resist it once its infront of me!

Doodledumdums · 15/06/2013 01:18

Haha, love the name change suggestion!

I never would and never have, but there is a sick part of me that would like to just feed a hamster a bit of onion and see if the theory is correct. I have visions of some little syrian hamster turning into a little diva! (I promise I would never actually do it!)

OP'd be forever answering the 'do they really not eat onions?' Tigger Grin

Like (and it's annoying me now because I can't remember what they don't have) was it 'chickensdonthavelips/eyelids/teeth'?

Or nevergoogle, whose advice I'm taking.

BridgetBidet · 15/06/2013 01:23

Agent ZigZag I had told him just to leave it poking out of the bag soooo many times and he still did it. He snapped it over his knee like he was enjoying it in a violent way. Anyway. This may or may not have been unreasonable of me but we discussed it and we have never fallen out over folding of foodstuffs ever again in the last 20 years.

Weasleyismyking · 15/06/2013 01:28

YANBU.
My DH is only allowed to only eats raw onion or cheese & onion crisps if we're not seeing each other that night, so hardly ever. He sometimes looks wistfully at it and sighs.

When we first got together he thought he could get away with eating it for lunch at work but when we met up in the evening as soon as he kissed me hello I'd politely move my head to one side (honeymoon period not polite now) and point out he'd been eating onions. so get away from me you stink!

HarderToKidnap · 15/06/2013 01:28

I have no opinions in raw onion but if course you can have a g&t whilst bfing! Just don't get drunk!

AgentZigzag · 15/06/2013 01:32

It was a bit petty of him to snap it, but I think if DH told me to do something so insignificant over and over (not that he would like) I might be tempted to assert myself and snap the fucker Grin

Although saying that, I have a bit of a thing about bakers picking up an uncut loaf in the middle before it's had time to cool, it breaks the crust so there's a couple of slices in the middle which are mangled to fuck.

I keep it to myself though Grin Just about.

Nice one on the 20 years of no arguing over foodstuffs though Smile

Bogeyface · 15/06/2013 01:33

YANBU

I hate it too, and while I never said to STBX that he couldnt have it, I did ask that if he scoffed a load on a kebab as in your situation, that he not sleep next to me.

To people who dont like it, it is like sleeping next to a constantly farting arse, it is THAT unpleasant!

YoniHuman · 15/06/2013 01:33

YANBU, Raw onions are vile. I hate it when you buy a salad/sandwich, take a bite and find they have ruined a perfectly lovely meal by hiding bits of raw onion in it. The same also applies to raw celery.

Bogeyface · 15/06/2013 01:38

I also hate the sandwich/salad thing too. Onion is a bit marmite, so best leave it out surely?

One of my mums IBS triggers is onion, she can just about tolerate a little bit cooked into something, but raw and she is in absolute agony for hours and hours.

Bogeyface · 15/06/2013 01:40

I dont mind celery so much as if you pick it out then you dont get the after taste, with onion you still get it no matter how careful you are.

I always order my QP with cheese at Maccies without onion or pickle so that I dont have to pick them out AND I always get a freshly cooked one :o

LuisGarcia · 15/06/2013 01:41

Neither of you is being unreasonable, as long as you both love each other. The problem here is you have a 5mo.

(You would also not be unreasonable to make him get up with the 5mo in the morning after his night out, for what it's worth)

Buzzardbird · 15/06/2013 01:43

Yabu for saying "icky".

Hope you feel better soon though Thanks

Doodledumdums · 15/06/2013 01:59

Yes bogey it is totally like sleeping next to a constantly farting arse!

Yes raw onion ruins many things, salad, sandwiches, pizza- bleugh, yuck, barf!

luis He was at work, not actually on a night out...but can I still make him get up with the baby in the morning? I have a feeling i'm going to be up half the night coughing, and he's fast asleep in his onion haze now!

Thanks for the flowers buzzard Smile

Bogeyface · 15/06/2013 02:06

You are ill, so you need a lie in.

And why the hell shouldnt he get up with his own child? Did you sign a contract when you gave birth that said that you had to do all the work? The baby is his child too, you are a mother, not a nanny!

LuisGarcia · 15/06/2013 02:09

yes, you can make him get up.

Doodledumdums · 15/06/2013 02:14

Yes that is true! I just sometimes feel a bit mean if he has been working late, but then again the baby didn't go to bed until 11:30 this evening, so really I was working as late as he was, AND i'm ill...so I think I deserve a lie in tomorrow more than he does!

Dorris83 · 15/06/2013 03:04

OP YANBU raw onion is the work of the devil.

I hate smelling it and really hate eating it. It's appearance in sandwiches and salads is irritating but you usually can pick it out (as long as it hasn't been diced, THAT's annoying)

The worst for me is coleslaw. I wish chefs/people/ the world would just decide once and for all whether raw onion should be in coleslaw or not, and then stick to that decision. I like coleslaw but if it was decided that all of the world's coleslaw should contain onion, I'd just always avoid it. Right now I have to guess, and if you eat raw onion, even the smallest bit, you'll be tasting it all day.

Grim grim grim.

amazingmumof6 · 15/06/2013 03:13

HIBU

LTBGrin

Doodledumdums · 15/06/2013 03:36

Totally with you re:coleslaw doris! I would avoid it too if I knew it DEFINITELY contained onion....but sometimes you guess and you THINK it is safe to eat, but some evil bit of onion works its way into the first bite and that's it, your day is ruined!

amazing- I should definitely LTB!

amazingmumof6 · 15/06/2013 04:40

doodle I think it's payback time!
eat as much raw garlic for breakfast as you can possibly manage ( it will be a great way to fight the illnesses you have!) and insists on lots of cuddles and kisses during the day.

blow him kisses to while standing right in front if him

talk into his face.

see if he gets the message! Grin

or just go on Ebay and buy some gasmasks!Grin

amazingmumof6 · 15/06/2013 04:42

btw I love raw onion of any kind, but I'm sympathetic to those less onionally-abled!Grin

differentnameforthis · 15/06/2013 07:03

I want a kebab now...

YABU op. It is his house too, and as you are, of course, allowed to ask him to desist from eating raw onion, you can't actually stop him.

He doesn't need it, but he likes it, so why can't he eat it?

Fairylea · 15/06/2013 07:10

Yabu.

Really sorry but you can't expect people not to eat relatively normal things because you don't like it.

I had an ex that hated the smell of fish cooking and would make a huge fuss if he came home from work to me cooking it. It drove me mad.

I eat a lot of fish now :)... and strangely enough truck loads of it when he told me he was leaving :) !
