To think this was a waste of police time?

At 10pm last night I answered the door to a police officer. He asked about my car, and whether I and it had been at a particular gym earlier in the week. We had. While there I committed an offence.

I made a mistake parking and scraped the plastic bumper of the car next to me. I did not report this. The policeman was off duty in the carpark and witnessed the offence. He took our number plates and went to visit the owner of the other car. She was unaware of the damage, but upon inspection there is indeed scuffing to the bumper.

This in now in the hands of our insurance companies. Was it really worth the police persuing this? No charges are being brought. I did something wrong, but we live in a congested city. My own car is covered in scuffs that have not (all) been caused by me. Should a scuffed bumper be seen more as part of the give and take of city living rather than a potentially criminal matter?

YABVU. Some twat scuffed my new car and didn't leave a note, makes my blood boil.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2013 15:30

I think that's a whole other thread *Flowers. Human rights, litter etc.

FlowersBlown · 14/06/2013 15:43

I think I'll just go and have a wank in the woods and forget all about this.
And FYI, my dp agrees with me. So there.

Have fun.

IWipeArses · 14/06/2013 15:44

LTB

Bowlersarm · 14/06/2013 15:53

OP as you are coming across as a bit of a wanker that sounds like a suitable thing for you to do Smile

Tallulahmae · 14/06/2013 15:55

Although it is probably illegal

ComposHat · 14/06/2013 15:56

I'd totally confess to having sex in the woods. No one's offered yet though.
Proobably worried you'd damage their knob and then run off.

OrangeFireandGoldashes · 14/06/2013 15:59

If you're so utterly convinced you're in the right, OP, and no amount of pointing out the compelling moral and legal arguments in favour of note-leaving is going to make you think otherwise, why the hell did you bother starting this thread in the first place?

wibblyjelly · 14/06/2013 16:02

I think the police have done you a favour op. If your insurance company had found out that you hadn't reported an accident to them, it could have invalidated your insurance.

limitedperiodonly · 14/06/2013 16:04

Police with nothing better to do; men having sex with other men in the woods; yuman rites.

OP you are Richard Littlejohn researching a column and I claim my £5.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2013 16:05

Don't forget the mess left in the woods from smoking limited.

I think this will be on The Wright Stuff personally.

FlowersBlown · 14/06/2013 16:18

This is going to sound crazy in light of how the thread turned out, but I did actually think some people would agree with me! I am more nuts than I thought. Even though I didn't get any support for my point of view this has all cheered me up immensely, so I'm very glad I posted.

And I am so far from being Richard Littlejohn it's not true.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 14/06/2013 16:23

And with that one post Flowers my admiration for you has rocketed.

FlowersBlown · 14/06/2013 16:33

Why thank you, hellhasno.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2013 16:38

You were quick in the woods Flowers. Grin

FlowersBlown · 14/06/2013 16:40

I'm waiting for night time. That's the time when it's not an offence.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2013 16:41

Oh right. Grin

FlowersBlown · 14/06/2013 16:41

I know the law on this one.

YABU OP. The scraping aside you should never ever distracted drive and if you do accidentally do it you should address that fact, be glad you didn't have a serious accident and try to find ways around doing it.

We all get distracted but to 'replay a conversation unconsciously', that doesn't happen, it comes with confidence (over so) in driving and automatic driving and it's dangerous.

As I said most people have done it accidentally every now and again but regardless of if you scraped a bumper, drifted a little or just suddenly realised you were driving on autopilot, the distracted driving should shit you up and you shouldn't try to excuse it with wasting Police time, or defending it with your own cars bumps and scrapes.

YABU to think it's okay to damage someone's property and not leave a note, however minimal the damage, and had you done so the Policeman wouldn't have picked you up on it. Perhaps he, like many others, have had damage from scrape and scratch dodgers. Tbh, you wasted police time by your actions, not them.

Plus if you can drive off with no note in this case, who is to say you don't do so in more serious damage? The police probably wanted to make it clear this was not okay so you don't get worse.

EmmelineGoulden · 14/06/2013 17:14

If I touched a car when parking or pulling out and I looked and saw I had just scrapped the plastic on the bumper I wouldn't have considered it an accident or left a note. If I scratched paint I'd leave a note.

I wouldn't wank in the woods at noght though. Day light only. Might not see nettles at night Shock.

StayAwayFromTheEdge · 14/06/2013 17:21

Emme - do you realise that it costs more to replace a scratched bumper than it does to polish out a scratch?

Damage is damage and you should own up.

limitedperiodonly · 14/06/2013 17:24

I don't think you're nuts, flowers. I don't think Littlejohn is nuts either. Anyone who earns as much as he does pressing so many buttons can't be.

As I said earlier, the police officer seemed very keen. IME it was extraordinary that you got a visit; and from someone off-duty too. If only the police round my way were half as diligent.

FWIW I probably wouldn't have left a note if I thought I could get away with it either. And sparkling I think bumpers are for kissing too. Apologies if it you weren't the poster who raised that.

But OP, you did damage the other car, and apparently you were seen, so you're going to have to suck it up.

I'm still marvelling about the super cops in your area. PM me. I might move there.

Sparklingbrook · 14/06/2013 17:26

OMG limited I didn't have you down as a bumper kisser. Shock

limitedperiodonly · 14/06/2013 17:31

I'm very gentle sparkling

I am a woman, in case that makes you think I'm some kind of perve Grin There's been a bit of an invasion of late.
