AIBU? My neighbour thinks I’ve stolen their garden bin.

My neighbour (let?s call them X) is accusing me of trespassing in their garden and of stealing their garden bin Blush, which seems like a bit of a ShockHmm to me as I think I am entitled to have it. Before I go blowing my top unnecessarily and making a fool of myself about all of this, tell me, AIBU? Here are some facts:

? We shared cost of the collection service pretty much 50/50 over a period of several years.
? X told me at the end of last year that they no longer wanted to share the bin.
? It was just sitting in their garden unused this year.
? I asked X about it and they said it was going to be collected and no we couldn?t have it.
? I phoned the council and found that everyone who had a waste collection bin last year was given the bins (when they were rented prior to that), as the council was changing their admin procedure for them.

? I offered to buy the bin from X, but I didn?t tell them how much I was going to offer, X didn?t name a price, and I have since changed my mind and don?t think I should pay X for it. I consider that the bin was purchased when we first went into the arrangement with them.
? X doesn?t want to use the bin or share it with me, so it seems right to me that I should just take it and use it. So, when they were on holiday I did just that ? went into their garden and took it. I haven?t paid them anything for it because I don?t see why I should. They don?t want it.
? I wasn?t trespassing in X?s garden because they had my bin, and so it is my right to go and retrieve my goods.

I?m not BU, am I? My neighbour, X seems to think I am. WWYD, oh wise and lovely people? I haven?t ?stolen? it, have I? Apparently the council has told X to report the theft of their bin by us, and us trespassing in their garden to the police!!

Sorry, so if someone doesn't want something anymore, it gives you a right to just go and take it? [hides all handbags and shoes that I don't wear anymore but still like to keep around]

First, it was shady to go into their garden whilst they were away... Almost like you knew you were doing something wrong, and wanted to do it when you wouldn't get caught. Otherwise, why not just go knock and the door and ask for it?

Secondly... It's a bloody bin. Can't you just buy another for the sake of not having a criminal record neighbourhood peace?

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 13/06/2013 23:38

Well dont nick a bin then

SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:40

But at least half of it's mine, though, isn't it?

OP posts:
SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 13/06/2013 23:40

Well saw it in half and leave her half alone

justmyview · 13/06/2013 23:41

Tee hee, is this for real?

SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:42

SPs I have considered doing that, but which way should I cut it up??!!

OP posts:
SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:42

Justmyview - yes, it really is for real

lemonandice · 13/06/2013 23:43

I'm a bit confused- you shared a bin, X decided they didn't want to anymore and they'd get it collected, and then when they were on holiday you just went in and took it?

The fact that you were going to pay them for it suggests you know it's not your bin, surely? Unless the bin was given to you by X or the council, it's not yours- and even if it was, I think it'd be pretty shakey to just march into someone's garden and take it back.

BabylonReturns · 13/06/2013 23:43

Eh?

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 13/06/2013 23:44

Straight down the middle so you get a wheel each

WafflyVersatile · 13/06/2013 23:44

your op makes no sense.

SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:44

Hmmm. That's an interesting viewpoint lemon. Certainly giving me food for thought, but of course, it's not really what I want to hear!!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 13/06/2013 23:45

Fill the bin with love and share it with the world. Smile

But really...just buy another!

TuftyFinch · 13/06/2013 23:45

Could you gets some pigs instead?

fuzzywuzzy · 13/06/2013 23:45

Vertically, you get to keep the side nearest your property give the other side back.

starfishmummy · 13/06/2013 23:46

I really can't be bothered.....

kinkyfuckery · 13/06/2013 23:46

Is this a reverse AIBU?

SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:47

Thanks Sps - I hadn't considered the wheels. But that seems like a good idea. I'd been thinking more of a horizontal slice, but vertically does seem better. Even so, I do think the whole bin is mine.

Never mind waffly. Plenty of others seem to get it.

Cut your self a larger part if you feel like that

reggiebean · 13/06/2013 23:48

You could move in to the house next door to the woman who paints her neighbours fence while hanging over it like a ninja. What an insane delightful neighbourhood that would be.

IneedAsockamnesty · 13/06/2013 23:48

So why don't you just get them to deliver you another bin?

SukiTake · 13/06/2013 23:51

You know, I might just do that SPs.

Reggie have you got the address so I can check out house prices there?

Socket I don't want to have to buy another when I have already, in my opinion paid for one. They have to be bought now, not rented.

OP posts:
PorkPieandPickle · 13/06/2013 23:52

They do sound like they're being awkward for the sake of it- if you paid for half of it over a period of years and they don't want it anymore, why do they care if you do?! Have there been any other fall outs that could have made them feel like being so petty? I really don't think the police would be interested in such a ridiculous story in the slightest?!

WandaDoff · 13/06/2013 23:55

Phone the council & tell them your bin is broken. They will most likely replace it free of charge.

Don't phone up & say it has been stolen, because they will charge you for a new one,

reggiebean · 13/06/2013 23:56

Suki Unfortunately, I don't know where this ninja painter lives. Keep an eye out for a half red/half green fence though. If I can find the thread, I'll mention to her that she needs to be on the look out for the woman with half a rolley-bin.

Can you imagine the block parties on that street?! Shock
