To be really upset

It is DHs 40th birthday today

Have booked him a surprise for Friday - a full day driving steam trains on the East Lancs railway. (He's a geek)

He was so delighted when I gave to him today - just thrilled and really excited.

I have booked Friday off work (unpaid) and arranged childcare

This morning at about 11am as we are celebrating and he's generally being delighted, a letter pops through the door.

East Lancs railway cancelling due to circumstances beyond their control. There is some problem with the train and they can't say when it will be sorted.

It cost £335 quid.

They have offered a refund in the letter but they are not answering the phone to sort that out

We can't afford to do anything else as they have our £335. If I could get it back we could so something else but as it stands we can't.

I am just so upset and worried by the fact they are not answering the phone.

This morning when I rang it rang out, but now it is ringing off after a couple of rings which is making me think they are rejecting the call.

I am just gutted :( I know in the scheme of things is not that bad but they've ruined a really carefully planned and expensive surprise for DHs 40th on his actual birthday :(

He's happy to wait Chairman - if they think they'll have dates in a month or so we'll wait, but from the letter it sounds longer term, so if it's 6 months I'd rather get the money back and he can choose something else

It's not the end of the world and at least he will have something to look forward to for longer, it was just so deflating after the initial excitement :(

Plus, I would really like to know if they think they can offer dates soonish, or if not, I'd like my money back asap. I actually think a phone call would have been more appropriate than a letter, (and they have my numbers) but maybe they had 100s to contact

You could still try asking your bank to reclaim the money for you. I'd suggest calling into your branch if you can rather than over the phone though.

Worth a try and you might get it back in time to do something on Friday.

Hope you get it sorted.

Why are you yet again wasting your hard earned cash on him after his recent behaviour? You are falling for the bullshit again aren't youSad

For your sake I hope you get your money back cat.

catgirl1976 · 12/06/2013 13:27

East Lancs railways have always been pretty reliable with us (Santa train for years etc), i'm sure you'll get your money back, they've been going for ages and aren't notorious for ripping people off or anything. But still, how annoying and disappointing. Have a takeaway or cook his fave meal and watch a film if you can't afford to go out tonight, all is not lost!!

Bearbehind · 12/06/2013 13:38

If you want any chance of getting your money back by Friday I think you need to be 5 minutes late for lunch and make the call now.

Hope you get it sorted.

Ashoething · 12/06/2013 13:39

Im glad to hear that cat-I hope by getting better you mean he is seeking counselling for his emotional abuse and has got a job?

Keep posting on relationships. All the best.

It's a heritage railway so most likely manned by volunteers. The same bloke who answers the phone will be the one who is also laying track and servicing the loco. They are an established railway so can't imagine for a minute they will have gone bust/closed down. Unfortunately if there is an engineering problem with the loco it may be beyond their control, although I can see why you are disappointed.

I do agree that they should've called you given the short notice and they should be able to do a direct transfer back of funds if you paid by visa. Hope Friday turns out to be a fun day anyway and it is worth waiting for when the loco is free to do the driver experience again! ( or so my DH would sayWink)

Finally managed to speak to them
There is a chance they can do the 22nd of July if all goes well at a meeting next Tuesday

If not it will be September or October

We are going to wait and see as DH would be happy to wait for the July date. If not they have promised a refund

I feel a bit better but its still disappointing :(
