My dd is 1 today. She only had one grandparent left my father in law. She didn't get a card from him. DH is really upset. I've told him if he's upset why doesn't he just ring his dad up and say - shall I pop up for x's birthday card? Am I being unreasonable to say this to him. I'm sick of him moping with the long face.

I would let DH do it. I understand this is upsetting, but at this stage its too young for your daughter to be upset, just the parents. Well, not 'just' but you know what I mean. See if it can be resolved, then work out a plan if necessary.

All you can do is try, and hope that by DH pointing it out, as tactfully as possible, that it was an oversight/he didn't really get how important it was for you all. This may produce a positive result, it may not. If it doesn't, you can work on Plan B for further birthdays, but at least you will have tried. It is just possible a card might be lost/delayed in the post. A phone call would confirm if this is so.

I wouldn't worry. If my lovely MIL passed away there wouldn't be anything from FIL. It wouldn't even enter his head to send a card to anyone. Some people are just like that.

Also, DD doesn't know she's only 1.

Let this one go and next year get DH to remind him a few days before.

When my dh's grandmother died all cards ceased from his grandfather. However if we didn't send him one it was commented on! Very frustrating!

It may arrive in the post tomorrow. Although I am surprised he didn't ring.

I don't think it will come in the post he lives 5 mins up the road. He called round on sat with a letter for DH that had gone to his house.
