My first AIBU - I have used advanced search and can't see an existing post on this so apologies if there is. I don't want to link to DM so please just google "Female Doctor Who" to look at the recent articles about this in the DM and newspapers.

It seems that it is a possibility and I can't understand why anyone would think this is a bad idea. AIBU?

i don't know anything about Dr Who, but he is a man and should stay a man.

SolidGoldBrass · 04/06/2013 11:22

I definitely think the next Doctor should be a woman. The great thing about writing stories is you can do whatever you like, within reason, and I think having a female Doctor would be really interesting (though I'd be slightly worried that, with Moffat in charge, she would be a gurly wuss who fell in love with all the aliens.)

And, actually, everything is a fight for feminism. NOthing wrong with that.

everythinghippie29 · 04/06/2013 11:24

I enjoy having different little crushes on each Dr. It must be the character, my Saturday night perving says keep it male for this reason alone!

ratspeaker · 04/06/2013 11:27

The female timelord Romana regenerated into a woman (Mary Tamm to Lalla Ward)so I think that kind of implies they regenerate as same gender

Asheth · 04/06/2013 11:29

No the Doctor is a man - I can't see a female doctor. But that doesn't mean there can't be a timelady. Susan could be brought back in a new incarnation for example to travel with the Doctor again. I'm very happy to see a timelady - but the Doctor is male.

treas · 04/06/2013 11:30

Why doesn't the Dr meet up with his daughter Jenny?

FriendlyLadybird · 04/06/2013 11:30

Nothing so far has indicated that Time Lords can be trans-gender. There were female Time Lords (obviously before the Time War) who regenerated into other female Time Lords. I think a female doctor would be a ridiculous idea -- BUT the doctor does not have to be young and sexy. At least they're introducing John Hurt as an older doctor again.

bigkidsdidit · 04/06/2013 11:30

surely there are female Timelords? How does it work otherwise?

I think the outrage is hilarious Grin

why not? would be interesting and people wouldn't desert the show. They never do, no matter how much they threaten.

And I love the 'it's Timelord not Timelady' line. How very Anchorman Grin

Chandon · 04/06/2013 11:31

Well, I think they should do a version of Pride and Prejudice with a Female Mr Darcy, and a lesbian love affair.

I also think the Queen should be played by Rowan Atkinson, it is not fair it is always a female, and always the SAME female.

I also think it was time Bono became female, Sting did it and it worked for him.

mrsjay · 04/06/2013 11:31

Why doesn't the Dr meet up with his daughter Jenny?

be a different time line or something and she is far to busy having The last Doctors babies Grin

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 04/06/2013 11:32

.Maybe everything you do is a fight for feminism SGB. Me notso. Why take something which works and change it just for the sake of it?

mummytime · 04/06/2013 11:34

In Elementary having Watson as female works for me, as long as their is minimal sexual chemistry (I do think they should give her a boyfriend though). I did also spoil it for my son my mentioning the twist I'd always wished Conan Doyle had done with Moriarty.

I think the Dr should be male. I'd like a more Donna like companion or a male one (I would love James Cordon!).
I think a different ethnicity, and older would be good. So what about Sanjeev Bhaskar?

Birdsgottafly · 04/06/2013 11:34

Last time we nominated a woman to head things (i grew up in "her Briton), it didn't go well.

Next thing, we'll be getting the desruction of the universe, blamed on us, leave this one to a man, i say.

mrsjay · 04/06/2013 11:38

if the Doctors get any younger it will be a kid actor from tracey beaker or something, on am i just getting on a bit Grin

peeriebear · 04/06/2013 11:38

They could just bring Jenny back. Why introduce such a potentially huge character then do NOTHING with her? Even give her her own series a la Sarah Jane.

mrsjay · 04/06/2013 11:39

Even give her her own series a la Sarah Jane.

oh yes that would be great, I think they did leave it just hanging the doctor has a dd oh ok move on

ephemeralfairy · 04/06/2013 11:40

LRD yes a black woman would be great. I only said 'man' because seeing everyone having panic attacks over the idea of a female Dr I wouldn't want anyone to actually have a heart attack at the sight of a non-white female Dr. Like I said, baby steps...
Grin

SolidGoldBrass · 04/06/2013 11:41

There have been suggestions the Doctor could be female. In Matt Smith's first episode, there's a bit where he has a momentary flap about whether he has regenerated as male or female, and in the Neil Gaiman episode he mentions another Time Lord who had regenerated as both sexes.

SaggyOldClothCatPUss: But it's not necessariy working all that well, some of the recent episodes have been rubbish, and an awful lot of people are getting tired of the creepy-old-man-and-feisty-ickle-girlies trope.

treas · 04/06/2013 11:42

They've left the Master's storyline open by the ring being retrieved by a female hand - therefore the Master could take on a female form.

Even better to have an evil woman.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/06/2013 11:42

Oh, I know, ephe ... just thinking! Grin

ephemeralfairy · 04/06/2013 11:42

And solid gold I agree. Of course it's about feminism. It is to me anyway.

hey've left the Master's storyline open by the ring being retrieved by a female hand - t

that was the masters wife she went to prison, he came back didnt he then fought his way back into that flashy light

LadyBeagleEyes · 04/06/2013 11:46

But why is it about feminism? It's an established male role, just as Sherlock or Miss Marple or Poirot or Merlin have been.
Batman is a man, Catwoman is a woman.
There must be loads of examples.
Leave it as it is.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 04/06/2013 11:48

No. I love strong female character like River, but no. Colin Morgan (Merlin) is being considered. I luffs him. Bill Nighy would be great or Martin Freeman.
