My first AIBU - I have used advanced search and can't see an existing post on this so apologies if there is. I don't want to link to DM so please just google "Female Doctor Who" to look at the recent articles about this in the DM and newspapers.

It seems that it is a possibility and I can't understand why anyone would think this is a bad idea. AIBU?

Would you cast a female Sherlock Homes? Or James Bond? No. The Dr is male. It's a tv character. I agree with the person who said not everything has to be about feminism. I d

They simply cannot make Dr Who female. I forbid it.

Would you cast a Male Miss Marple? Grin

the Doctor is male.

I agree - not everything has to be a fight for feminism.

I also really don't care about whether his companions are shown in a feminist way. It's entertainment. A bit of an unrequited crush is fine by me. I really enjoyed the Dr and Rose storyline. Please let's not turn it into politically correct children's TV! I very nearly jumped ship this series because of the whole dumbing down thing going on. I want a strong aloof male Dr and a feisty kick arse companion.

Oh, people have to get outraged about change with Dr Who, it's the tradition!

Joanna Lumley as a female Dr Who in the special made me laugh. I would like to see a female Dr Who and obviously the argument about the character doesn't make that much sense when he regenerates! But I think it would lose the following because I think people would struggle to cope with the idea of him and River Song. Sadly. And I think a lot of the 'I'm mad, me!' reads differently in a woman (this may be why I find Matt Smith quite annoying sometimes).

WorraLiberty - don't give the Americans any ideas, its bad enough that they have cast Jennifer Garner as MarpleHmm

Who says it has to be about feminism and not about shaking up a slightly flagging formula?

This could be the biggest (and most violent) MN protest yet, if they tried to cast a female Doctor!

Obviously a touchy subject. James is traditionally a man's name, as is Sherlock. I don't know The Doctor's real name so I can't comment on that. As somebody upthread said ? it?s only a TV Show Grin Butting out now as I didn?t realise it was all so complicated!

You have to remember that Doctor Who fans (I'm one!), like fans of many other long running programmes will desert the series in droves if the story goes away from the official line. The doctor is male. Always has been. He is a Time Lord, Father, Grandfather (and possibly a war criminal if it goes the way I think it will with John Hurt). Some things just don't get changed, it will wreck the whole thing.
YABU

Would it shake up the formula, though?

Cos I would worry it'd get drowned in a load of Daily-Mail-styleee shock. 'Female Dr Who: Experts Predict Massive Rise in Lesbianism Amongst Our Children', with a nice byline about "she used to love watching River Song's high heels and how she's wearing dungarees all day", one mother's sad story.

We know that Time Lords can regenerate into bodies of the other sex (it was mentioned in the episode "The Doctor's Wife").

But I think I'd prefer to see the character continue in male bodies.

NAh LRDtheFeministDragon - DM already have done the outrage with Captain Jack's character

Report
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 04/06/2013 10:42

If he was a woman would he have to be a Time Lady? That would be next! Demonstrations because "Being a Time Lord when you are female is sexist" next thing you know the Tardis will be pink and have nice voiles in the windows, and flowers in the alcoves! Confused

Oh, and the Doctor's longest running companion was male (Frazer Hines, playing Jamie, over 100 episodes in the 1960s and a couple of appearances in the 1980s).

I want him to regenerate into an older man who can act. This gettin younger thing is starting to annoy me.

YANBU. I think Alex Kingston would make a fantastic doctor. But, she's already River Song so not sure how they would get around that.

I know Billie Piper's name was being flung around last time when David Tennant left, and the same this time around. If they can get around her being Rose then they can get around Alex Kingston being the doctor. But that's just my opinion, I'm a little bit in love with Alex Kingston. Blush
