to hope that the next Doctor Who is female and not understand why this would be so terrible?

My first AIBU - I have used advanced search and can't see an existing post on this so apologies if there is. I don't want to link to DM so please just google "Female Doctor Who" to look at the recent articles about this in the DM and newspapers.

It seems that it is a possibility and I can't understand why anyone would think this is a bad idea. AIBU?

Sorry, I just think Dr Who should be a man. It's kind of tradition and it would just be odd if he was a she. So if he was a she would they give her a male "companion"? Nopenopenope, doesn't work.

I don't care as long as the Doctor regenerates into Daniel Craig. But that ain't going to happen.

Surely the doctor needs to be neither male, nor mad.

Female is fine. It could be a chance to update it and also give more freedom to the writers.

I see very little in common with the recent DW and the first anyway.

I've got to say, I wouldn't want either Billie Piper or Alex Kingston as the doctor, not at all!

I think AK is far too sexy.

Moffat has prepared the way for there to be a female Doctor, when Matt Smith's Doctor rambled on about another Time Lord, The Corsair, having been female in some regenerations.

Don't know how I would feel about it TBH. It would depend on who they cast.

I'd like Rufus Sewell in the part - bit of maturity

If only the Sarah Jane adventures could have continued :( They were brilliant and she was a tremendously positive role model.
I think if they did a female Doctor it would be for one series then back to men, which is worse in a way, like a token gesture. Just because he could theoretically change gender, doesn't mean he should.

I think it should be Dawn French.

I would love to see a a shake up (a bit bored of the samey samey story lines and "look at how crazy and fun I am" doctors), but I doubt it would happen.
I also do not like how they (mainly Moffat) write female characters so it would probably be a flop in my eyes.

I think the Doctor (not Dr Who. His name is the Doctor, he's not Mr Who who is a doctor) should stay male. Although I don't agree with some articles I've read that say he needs to be a role model for boys - the Doctor is a role model for girls as well and my sons have female role models.
I also didn't think Watson should be a woman on Elementary. In my opinion things like Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who are established enough that we should stick to the story.
And Steven Moffat didn't write The Doctor's Wife - Neil Gaiman did. I don't think that line is strong enough to say they're definitely planning a female Doctor, though I wouldn't put it past them to drop a tiny clue like that.

peeriebear agree about the tokenism. If they changed the Dr to a women it would just seem fake

Treas no I didn't. I think that all Matt Smith does is run around like a tit being all manic and mad, or tries to be funny. He might be able to act, but he isn't showing it at all! And I'm not anti him for his age, I just don't want to see the Dr getting younger and younger until we have to watch him on CBeebies!

I'm a very recent convert to Dr Who. I bloody love River Song. Amy Pond however...!
I'd love to see a female Dr. But how about a non-white man next?? Baby steps...

I'd like a female Doctor Who. Not for particularly feminist reasons, but just ... why not?

And as for 'Would you cast a female Sherlock Homes? Or James Bond?' my answer is a resounding YES, for the same reason.

I know Dr Who fans love and adore the show till the end but some of the names being bandied around as the Dr replacement are so laughable.

Dr Who would be a major step back for lots of the names being put forward. It's only a Saturday tea time programme.

I think The Doctor as a species is male is he not so will always be a man , does it really matter there is an actor who has been banded about would make a great Doctor but I cant remember his name , or what he has been in Blush

I did like the Tom Hiddleston suggestion, but only because it would brighten up my weekend.

There are female timelords, though?! Confused

I totally missed that if it is a male species.

ephe - or a black woman?

I agree. Eddie Redmayne? David Harewood? I think not.

Zawe Ashton is included in the Guardian's poll. If the production team are to be believed, there are no women being considered, but I think she'd be excellent. She effortlessly gets across intelligent, sardonic, mercurial, stubborn, but all with pathos and humanity

Many other species can change their sex if the environment/demand dictates.

There are female timelords as there are female chairmen.

It might be Lord and Lady, but IMO it is Timelord and Timelord.

I was outraged when it looked as though the Daleks where going to join forces with the Cyber Men, i was delighted by the line "How many are you?", CM "5 million", Dalek "We are four, you will be exterminated".

Birds, wonder whether this was an in joke reference to the fact that in the good old days of v low budgets they only ever had 4 Daleks and moved them around a lot? Grin

Personally I don't think a female Dr would work. Better for a female character to be a person in her own right with her own series - Sarah-Jane was good.

Didn't Donna become half Time Lord; the 'Doctor Donna' as the Ood kept saying? She was brilliant. Would be a great Doctor.

I think it's more likely that we'll get a non-white Doctor than a female Doctor. We've already seen a cross-racial regeneration (Mels to River) on our screens under Moffat's reign in an episode written by him (more than you can say about the passing mention of the Corsair in an episode written by Gaiman) so I just think it's more likely to happen.

It also won't be any of the big names that have been suggested. Doctor Who, in recent years at least, likes to use relatively undiscovered actors. It's good to use an unknown actor because then you watch them as the character, without any preconceived opinions about what they were like in other programmes. So it won't be Olivia Colman or Helen Mirren or anyone like that.
